Don't make this mistake

It happened to me and I survived (although I took about 5% damage to hull and 10% damage to some modules). I immediately remedied the situation.

That damned Silent Running, it's horrible. I turned it on by mistake and forgot my binding to turn it off. Couldn't quit the game as I was "in danger", and I panicked at the thought of having to locate it in the vast bindings menu...I got lucky and took a few guesses and got it.

Two things in combination made it happen:

1. I am not a smuggler and I rarely need to smuggle, so I often have to think hard to remember which key it was.
2. My thrustmaster had broken a few days previously and I had reverted to my Xbox controller, which I had long since forgotten the binding of Silent Running.
3. I was stupid enough to not realise that I can just use the modules panel to turn it off.

Even if you know off by heart which shortcut you've assigned it to do this:

Completely unbind the Silent Running hotkey when out exploring

You could activate it without realising and alt-tab and come back to ashes.

Right control panel?!

I also kept landing gear on the keyboard, far away from the booster button on the HOTAS.

AND same for Heatsink & Silent running.

Sorry OT, but does chaffing help?

No.

If anything, it only delays the inevitable, if that. Once they have LOS they usually just chase you down and scan you. Heatsinks will not help either once they establish LOS, hence the necessity of a clever approach. If you are in a hurry speed coupled with heatsinks works just as well, ie just get into station faster than they can scan. Heatsinks are still a necessity though to approach within 2km and still be invisible on scanners.

Used correctly, silent running is your best friend when someone pops your shields :)

Heat-sink is better.

You are invisible with ALL your functions. In any event, if someone popped your shields chances are 99% that you are WVR and if so, silent running will just help the bandit kill you quicker :)

Sorry total noob here, It sounds like heat sink can be used in a combat situation to break target lock/prevent target lock? Or am I reading into something that isn't there.

Basically, yes. You drop off the scanners of other ships.

It is however not a 'cure-all'. At most it gains you a second or two advantage, which is basically all you need in a fight. That said, as mentioned before, if the fight is WVR (within visual range) then it will not help at all - as the saying goes, if you can see it you can shoot it, irrespective of whether you have lock or not.
