"Don't rush into an Anaconda, do Engineering first...."

Correction .. three and a half decades. Elite came out in 1984. Since I follow retro-gaming groups on FB I know for a fact lots of people still play Elite 1,2,3. I finished Elite 3 myself over 4 times in the last 15 years. Underneath all the mats/engineers/ships/missions .. The core of the game is still the same. FDEV has been smart not to compromise the core of the game.
Very true. Being one of those of the Class of '84, I couldn't believe it when David announced that he was going to bring it back if he could get the backing for it. I'd long given up that dream yet, there it was. And I'm still here. :)

If you can't see what would engross a player to spend over 4k hours in its galaxy I'd be lost trying to explain it to you, we have other regular posters with in excess of 10k hours played - should we ask them what has made them put so much time into it too?

...don't worry about lack of substance, all I'm currently doing is mirroring your own contribution, which, unsurprisingly, you dislike...

To explore all the systems (some 400 billion of them) might take a little over 4k hours...

But I am in 2 squadrons too, so have folk to interact with and enjoy everything the game offers...

Oh, and I have probably 40+ G5 engineered ships on 2 Fleet Carriers on top of my mountain too 🥂

Being engrossed in a game is not the same as requiring 4k hours to be considered as having played the game, my dude.
That's not how deep the game is. He can play 10k hours because he enjoys the game, doesn't mean the game is deep enough to require 10k hours to be considered as "having played the game" as you called it.

That said, congratulation on your 40+ G5 engineered ships on 2 Fleet Carriers. Would you like a cookie for that?

... my dude.
Oh, I'd never be your dude, rube... I got class...

No, I don't need a cookie... I'll just revel in the fact that every minute I have spent playing the game has been exactly what it should have been, fun, not grind, drag or 'forced' to do anything I didn't want to do - knowing full well that there are those who are unhappy because they consider the game 'forces' them to do something, that is far more satisfying than a cookie, take my word on that 🥂

Well, I don't see any class, I just see a random dude bragging about his 4k hours of gameplay with an elitist attitude. Not the classiest thing I've seen.

Good for you that you enjoyed the game. Just have some class and not brag about it like it's something worth bragging about. It's a game.

Yep, it's a game... the same as this conversation we are having... I just see a random rube bleating about how unfair the game is...

Aww calling others grubes is considered as having class now? I really need to catch up on the new trends.
Also, that guy is right tho, calling yourself as "having class" is kinda cringe lol. If you have to tell people that you have class then, well, you don't.

Engineering was already overhauled - it used to be much, much worse in the past. I can't see it change any further
Certainly it used to be much harder in the past, but I would expect - like obtaining credits - that Frontier will continue to make engineering (gradually) easier in future. They've hinted recently that they're not happy with how material gathering is working.

Their aim seems to be to keep the "time to complete power progression" reasonably constant as more things get added to the game. So once Odyssey's engineering (or equivalent) has been in for a while, then the difficulty will come down a bit both for the new and existing stuff.

And the rest of the population is expected to praise the system and how "acceptable" it is, along with their "unique" way of playing.

Noone has ever expected anyone to praise engineering, thats simply not possible. There have been zero white knights in this thread at all.

Its more about there are dumb ways to go about it, and expecting a path or manner through it that can only be that dumb way is what people are discouraging.

Its not exactly new players faults, as we were all new once and had to look at this thing wondering how to go about it. It is true that new players have no basis but to expect the dumb path though. Basically engineering is caught in the old way which older players are used to... new players experienced something after frontier invalidated credits so are probably expecting the same thing from engineering, but showed up and saw for the first time a system where you actually have to do something.

Feel free to write an open letter. I think it would be better if they turned credits back on and nerfed engineering into nothing instead.

To be honest, I think the biggest problem about engineering isn't the grind, because lets be honest, many people will spend more time grinding credits than getting the engineering mats. But no one is complaining of the grind you have to do to to fully A grade a Cutter or Corvette.

It's more about the contriving manner of the things you have to do just to get some engineering mats, which makes it a bigger grind that it actually is. I mean, you don't need to open 3-4 tabs in browsers and create accounts just to keep track of your progress when you're grinding credits or reputation.

Many might say that it's to make you do different aspects of the games, but just the unlocking part of the engineering is enough for that. The biggest reason many people complaint about the engineering is how it makes it difficult for people to just do only the things they enjoy and still be able to upgrade their ships.

You mean in terms of the rarity levels of each material or the entire concept of mats? Will be interesting to see what direction they'll take, although I imagine this will be years away still.

We might even get megaship looting fixed before!

It seems that FDev are keen to have new players 'catch' up to the rest (which I don't mind in terms of engineering, quite the opposite), but my cynical self believes this is more because that's good for cosmetic sales, as opposed to having a satisfying progression curve in place (in terms of mats I don't actually care, I don't consider it very engaging gameplay but not bad enough to complain about it either), otherwise we wouldn't have the earnings in the game as they are while assets (ships, modules) have been left untouched, in in fact at times get discounts as well.

My oh my, getting strung up on my mirroring your slang terms now? Never mind, you go back to hating engineering whilst I push the blueprints on the Colonia engineers closer to completion.

As for class, if you ain't got it, you ain't gonna recognise it 🤪

lol...used the word "rube" by yourself, then proceed to call it my slang terms. Amazing how your brain worked that out lmao.
Well, maybe I should apologize for the typo? I thought it's pretty obvious.
Also, you don't need to report to me what you're doing, I'm not your dad...What are you even thinking?
As for class, that's not how it works, my dude. I might not have class, but I recognize class when I see it. And I'm positive you have none just from the fact that you have to repeatedly mention how much class you have. And the cringy emojis too...

You don't for engineering either. I've never kept track of my material inventory anywhere but in game. I pretty much know the mats I need for just about anything now, but I have checked Inara to see what rare stuff I'd need for a specific recipe before, and I've also just flown to the Engineer to do what I could, made note of what I was short of, then returned later after I'd gathered enough. Now with remote engineering it's even easier to check on what you need in game.

One could decide they need 387,568,834 credits, then leave the game to create some grand scheme of acquiring them, utilizing multiple tabs and even creating an account to somewhere that would track their credits and all importantly running an up to a second calculation of cr/hr, but it hardly makes it required, if even convenient.

Elite forums seem to be real hostile toward new players for some reason.

I've followed this thread from the beginning. There have been a lot of very helpful, nicely worded posts, and OP responded to very few of them, opting instead for banter with those more blunt in their opinions. Multiple people have asked for more info, so they can better help them, to no avail. St. Stealthie offered to help in game in multiple ways, even using his FC to give OP a free 5k ly ride they could instantly return to the bubble from to unlock Palin, and I think a trip to a spot in the Galaxy where OP could have gathered a very substantial supply of raw mats in little time.

These are incredibly helpful forums, they may appear a little less so when one sees ridiculous battle lines being drawn and instead focuses on which chorus to add an echo too.

I know English isn't your native language, and that your command of it is very good...

Mirroring your own slang.... You use a slang term conversing with me, I'll use an equally derogatory term replying... simple....
As the whole discussion is about engineering, I thought to bring it at least vaguely back on topic - casually mentioning that I am deliberately doing the thing you dislike so vehemently and in doing so actually helping the other Colonia residents and visitors..
I'm probably old enough to be your grandad, which is hilarious.

There, a nice post without the cringy emojis...

I think overall I'm in the lead in the exchange of good insults game we are engaging in here, wouldn't you agree?

But, it is getting monotonous, so I'll leave the thread to go back on topic before The Yaffle notices...

Again, you're the only one using slang terms such as "rube" while calling yourself classy...
I don't remember actually using any derogatory term toward you, did I? Did you just take offense from my comments and imagined it yourself?

That said, I don't hate engineering THAT much to be called "vehemently dislike". I'm done with engineering my ships, so I don't care, I'm just being understanding toward players who hate it. Unlike you, an elitist who think otherwise.
As for old enough to be my granddad, well, you certainly don't act your age at all lmao.

Also, did you just announce yourself the winner of an argument on the internet? I'm getting goosebumps from the cringe lol.

Don't get too hung up on the hostile part. That's just referring to certain people in the forums. Those who actually were trying to help and be helpful aren't included obviously. Certain people were throwing shades so I thought to join the fun to throw some shades back.

As for the 3-4 tabs thing. Well, not everyone have great memory. I certainly don't because I still can't remember which category a mat belongs to when I see the name. Especially for new players who still working their way around engineering.

I've got terrible memory (partied hard as a youngster), and have found the online tools good but fiddly so use just notebooks.

These have been really handy, especially when dealing with engineering but also for working out trade stuff, keeping note of cmdr's encountered, places to visit etc.
The two pictured here cover about a year, the majority of one was trade runs and engineering materials grids.
