Newcomer / Intro Double cross Missions

I've noticed a lot of the missions I take seem to have the ability to double cross the employer, just now i was doing one where i hunt pirates, drop into a USS and theres a single ship there who talks at me about how the other guys are scabs and he'll pay me to shoot system authority ships instead, it wasn't something i was interested in doing so i killed him, but as i do I get fined for attacking him and then for killing him, then i notice the mission he was offering has been accepted to my log and when i abandon it tells me i've failed the original one as well.

Kinda confused about this, usually when a mission offers me a double cross and i ignore it plus abandon the option it autocompletes the original mission, any wisdom veterans can throw my way on this issue?

Firstly, don't attack a ship that is Clean - you will always be fined and probably attacked in that system by all authority vessels.
The double cross missions seem a little buggy (they were in Gamma). What I have found is that on an assassination mission, if you continue to complete the original, it will still be achieved. You just have a choice as to which option you go for. But it did clear my current level of achievement - I had to kill 5 pirates, got to 4 kills, then got asked to double cross, then had to do another 5 kills to complete the original mission.
