Dual Universe

I'm sure there was a thread somewhere, couldn't find it. I guess it's time to refresh the topic.

New dev diary today. I won't write wall of text about what this game is, you can just follow the link and get right into business.
Just to note - I'm not affiliated with the company in any way. Just an interested individual ;)

New update showing seamless moon to planet transition

“Obviously we couldn’t extend it forever and now it’s time to move on to the next stage,” writes the studio. “After September 7th, we will temporarily disable the Crowdfunding portal. No new pledges or upgrades will be possible once the portal is disabled. We will reopen the Crowdfunding Portal later in Q4 2017 with new Supporter Packs. Supporter Packs will include different rewards than Founder Packs and the Lifetime Subscription reward won’t be available anymore.”

I'm looking forward to this game, I haven't backed it, but instead, I'm waiting for release. It should be a really good game when finished. :)

Then Baillie opens a panel on one of the ships and shows me a screen with some scatterings of Lua programming language. If you know how to use this, you can program your ship to do things automatically, such as correct its trajectory if it’s about to hit the earth, or retract its landing gear shortly after take off.

“If you know Lua you can do anything you want – not only in the spaceship controls by the way, but you can also make contraptions… screens in which you can have anything displayed… games!”

This is an interesting feature

I visited Novaquark booth at Gamescom and they had really small booth. They had only a gameplay video running, no chance to test the game yet. Im expecting that their booth size will increase if this game gets some success.
Im still very doubtful about the whole single shard system...

Nevertheless, when i see some first gameplay videos and if those are convincing, ill buy this. Alpha should begin at the end of the month.

That was reminiscent of FFE and what ED is aspiring to. Well the trip in space had the ED feel and look to it as well as "journeying" space music. I hope FDev doesn't stay on the laurels concerning ED and improve it where instancing is no longer needed as better hardware becomes available. The different roles (in Dual Universe) such as being an in-game rp'd indie developer sounds interesting too.

My only beef with it is the incredibly cramped space.

While it's not feasible to have a 1:1 system scale the planets feel far to close and incredibly cartoony.

Still, looks good.

Good stuff

They're using Unigene for planetary generation, but there's only two worlds to explore right now.
As for the single shard instance, unless they're planning to use Improbable or Cloudgine for middleware heavy lifting then I doubt this'll be a reality. Nobody has cracked it yet, not even Roberts with his $100m war chest.

We're only just starting our own journey making a huge game, you can tag along for the ride here. The universe engine is up and running and being coded into Lumberyard (CryEngine)

I can't wait to test the pre-alpha in the coming week end! I managed to build my ship last time and crash land it lol!

Their single shard octree cluster is proprietary, so the rights of the technical details as to how it works is owned by them, BUT, they do seem to be using lots of established middle ware such as amazon aws and most likely mysql, mongo, db, etc etc all those services which ever not sure apart from amazon services.

But it works so, i've seen tons of players sucessfully, and not much lag! for a pre-alpha that's really impressive.

Looking really promising for quite an early stage of the project. Do you know if the pre-alpha is NDA bound or can we expect to see player videos on YT about it?
