Outside of missions, where can one find these?

- base raids (low sec): scan data points
- satellite USS around inhabited ELWs
- crashed satellite POIs on planets
- Encoded Emission USSs

Did I forget any?

Thanks, m'dude. +1

Well guys I took your advice & went down to a planet, found a data point, scanned it, got SLF, rolled a lvl 1 DD mod, and now my Cobra is as agile as an Eagle. :)

I'm a massive noob with the engineers stuff on a whole. I focused Farseer like a laser because of the jump range increase(I'm primarily Explorer). So forgive these stupid questions.

How do you raid a base? Fly over it and shoot everything that moves or shoots back?
Where are some planets with settlements that have data points?
Is the dirty drive upgrade really that far superior to the clean drive upgrade? I thought the DD has a lot of negatives with it but not nearly as much as the CD.

Thanks 😃

Dirty drives run hotter than clean drives but give you more of an upside.

It's personal preference really, and it depends on what your ship needs. Also, some may opt for one or the other because they may have mats for G3 CDs, but not G3 DDs.

What people are calling base raiding involves equipping a SRV, landing near a low or medium security base and then driving into the base and scanning things called data points. You have to scan between 3 and 5 of these within a time limit to get the scan data, which may include specialised legacy firmware. Usually this can be done without getting attacked, although scan the wrong thing or enter the wrong area and you will set off the alarms and have to fight the turrets and sentrys. Some data points can be hard to find a may require scanning through a wall, you can either try and learn the layouts locations yourself or you can get some help:

This thread here has information on medium security settlements (for modified embedded firmware primarily, but you can get the others as well): https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...d-Guide-for-Modified-Embedded-Firmware/page18

Djadjok has helpfully provided some maps of the settlements including the data point locations: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...ZkRfGmZGDt742HjeGuIyvvlQzQ/edit#gid=701401141

Good luck.

If you are an explorer, I'd go for Clean Drive Tuning G1 as it gives you a boost in jump-range (4D Thrusters in an AspX), also rolling with Felicity ups your percentage. After 34% into Grade 3 on an Engineer you unlock the next one.

Pretty much all of the explorer mods can be got easily from scanning and surface prospecting (you end up with loads of them too and, up to grade 3, rolling is a good way to increase rep with an engineer). One or two have to be got from mining (again though you end up with a fair few) and only one, the dreaded Chemical Manipulators (for the G5 increased FSD) from shooting at things.

I got, in my AspX, these - all of them gave me a bit more jump-range:

Thrusters - G1 - Clean Drive Tuning - from Felicity
Power Plant - G1 - Overcharged Power Plant - from Felicity (so you can get a lower, but still A grade, Power Plant)
Shield Generator - G1 - Enhanced low power Sheilds - from Elvira (on the lowest D grade)
Power Distributer - G2 - Engine Focused Power Distributer - from Mr. Dweller (boost with a 2D!)

Doesn't give you a jump boost (or impact negatively) a really nice to have:
Armour - G1 - Heavy Duty Armour - from Liz

It's also really fun, my view, to break it up and give other facets of the game a go. My first time surface prospecting for engineers and I loved it!
