Newcomer / Intro Dumb Ship/Build Questions

Is this correct? Am I interpreting my Coriolis Beluga build all wrong?

X.
No, you're interpreting fine, but thrusters aren't used during supercruise, their only contribution to heat is how much power they draw at idle.

Clean drives draw more power at idle, so they make more heat in an exploration build.

It's not a huge difference, but if you're interested in min/max, that's the explanation.

As his image shows, power consumption is the same at g3 (but not at g5).

Interestingly, thrusters are still necessary for supercruise as you drop out and take emergency drop damage if you turn them off. (So you cannot AFMU your thrusters in supercruise - speaking from experience ...)

RE Engineers: You dont need to finish the level 1 upgrade before starting the level 2, start it as soon as its available and level 1 will fill up immediately. The higher an upgrade is the more valuable/easier it is to rank up with the Engineer if you have the mats.

The introduction to the next Engineer happens at level 4 iirc.

May need to relog at level 4 to get the invite if dont want to go level 5 for any reason or short of mats.

Light life support is the cherry on the icing on the cake, can do an explo trip to Colonia and unlock them then.

Optional extras you may want to fully explore and interact with Horizons - SRV bay or double, recon limpet, every scanner you can fit, a small Pulse or Beam Laser, some people have a mining laser for mats (no refinery needed if just getting mats) and I even have a fighter bay just for fun. All of it affects the jump range but its still my 'exploration' ship. So depends what you want to do when you get there :)

Edit: no fighter on Asp obviously

That’s G3. Look at G5.

Thx for clearing that up guys. The only thing I noticed with my Beluga was that with the Dirty I always got the temperature warning
when jumping systems. After changing them to the Cleans it ran much cooler and no more annoying warning during each jump.

Dumb Question #3: I have Clean thrusters in this build, because that's what everyone else has. I presume that's because they reduce heat, and heat is bad. Dirty thrusters on the other hand are faster, but hotter. When would I pick Dirty over Clean? Is Dirty for combat situations, or is heat a problem there too? Just for flat out speed/racing? Is that something I'd want to slap on a big lumbering cargo ship because every little speck of escape speed helps?
With a Type 7 heat management is going to be a real problem (get used to hearing heat warning every time you jump if you want to fly all A rated modules). Limiting yourself to Grade 1 Clean however still does the job without drawing extra power. My real recommendation however is Reinforced. The name doesn't give it away, but grade 5 reinforced is almost as good thermally as grade 5 clean, with the added bonus of no additional power usage. It's fantastic and frequently overlooked.

Dumb Question #4: I have regular shields rather than bi-weave shields on this. Is that the right call? As I understand it, bi-weave shields regenerate faster... am I good with a regular 3A, or should I load in a bi-weave and some of those booster utility doodads? I shouldn't expect much in the way of trouble while I'm out in the black exploring, but I also don't want to get pancaked and lose all my exploration data on my way back home, right?
I say go with a regular shield and make it lighter or more energy efficient. An overlooked feature of the Type 7 is that it's the third most maneuverable L size ship, after the corvette and the clipper. Especially with it's great mas-lock factor I have never had any trouble avoiding npc interdictions with it. Mining... well just get out before they get you.

I thought AMFU's could repair a blown canopy?
When a canopy is gone it is gone, either AMFU or repair limpets can do something for a damaged canopy, I think, but if it is gone and you are on your x minutes of life support nothing short of landing somewhere with a repair facility will help.

Here is my AspX . I like clean drives stripped down. They're lighter, run cooler on high g worlds or star exclusion zones. I've landed on 9g worlds with those drives. I personally like supercruise assist, so I eat 10.5 ly jump for it, but I don't notice it when I go exploring. Rail gun does get used on my ship at times, I think it's essential. I also have mining laser just in case. I have just enough distributor to boost. I also have point defense because I do take the Asp to guardian sites. Otherwise, I believe our ships are identical. Oh, I have 2A powerplant, gives slightly more jump. Love that ship!
