DISTANT WORLDS 2 - BASECAMP EVENTS

Basecamps are our weekly rally points. After a week of exploring, we gather at the next waypoint on the journey to beagle point to relax, socialise and have fun. This is where most of the emergent content of Distant Worlds occurs, from the crazy crash landings, to the sudden impromptu games like SRV tag and bridge building, to the more formalised events like mountain climbing. This thread is to list these, or make suggestions, and for you guys to post the shenanigans you come up with for all to see.

As always, please make me aware of any cool stuff that happens throughout the expedition and I will try to put it in the newsletter. Please also try and record your events and send me the footage or the link to your own videos about it whenever you want.

Official Event Leads:
Dr. Kaii
Kancro Vantas

Please be in touch with either of us if you would like to suggest an event, either through private message or on discord.

Regular Events:
Exploration Circuits - Organised by Alistair Hope (see post #3)
CQC Events - Organised by Zulu Romeo (see post #4)
Exploration Events - Organised by Kelanen Alcatraz (see post #5)
Console Events - Consoles may organise their own events (see post #6 & #7 by JonathanBurnage - Xbox - and Allcrowsareblack - PS4)
PS4 Events - Exploration Events and Circuits and CQC tournaments will be mirrored where practicable. Events unique to the platform may be organised in addition (see post #7)

CODES:
GREEN - No official events planned. CODE GREEN basecamps are drop-in / drop-out events. Arrive, see if you can end up in a good instance, chat, make friends, suggest a game, record - see what happens!
ORANGE - Official events suggested. Some basecamps will be ideal for certain events, or the organisers may wish to encourage specific games. CODE ORANGE basecamp statuses will show here and be announced. The organisers will likely be involved, there will likely be a stream going on.
RED - Official event planned. Organisers will be strongly encouraging events at these waypoints.

Get status change alerts via announcements on the official twitter, or FleetComm discord

CURRENT STATUS:
The current basecamp is in CODE GREEN

Nothing official planned, but please do go a sufficient amount of nuts, had a huge amount of Good Times, and make sure you point a camera at all the Great, as well as Stupid things that happen for all to see
.

If you wanna make an event, please be in touch with an organiser, or respond here. Check this thread or the Fleetcomm Discord #dw2-events channel for impromptu events!

Rules for games:
Destruction Derby:

  • A free-for-all fight to the death - last CMDR standing wins.
  • Competitors meet at a designated location.
  • All the SRVs enter the arena.
  • Spectators in SRVs and ships gather around the arena (warning: be aware of SRV weapons fire at this event).
  • When the signal is given, all SRVs are to fight to the death... shooting at and ramming each other until one SRV remains.
  • If an SRV is forcibly pushed off the cliff, or leaves of their own accord, they eliminated.
  • Above the arena hovers (recommended two) stationary sniper ships - their job is to "laser the arena". Basically the snipers randomly and continuously reign down laser fire into the arena. If the SRVs below drive through the laser fire they'll obviously take more damage than usual. The snipers are not to pick on specific competitors, but they should concentrate their fire wherever a melee is taking place. (This will make for great video!)
  • Snipers with beam lasers fitted would be idea, but pretty much all other weaponry will do.
  • Repair is not allowed for SRV competitors - anyone spotted doing it is disqualified.
  • Several rounds can be held and the winner of each goes to a final on a smaller arena

Distant Worlds 2 CQC Initiative
"The first rule of CQC Arena is: you talk to everybody about CQC Arena."

Since Distant Worlds 1, there has been a tradition among the participating CMDRs of indulging in Close Quarters Combat (CQC) Arena action during the quieter times of the expedition. Today, with thousands more taking part in Distant Worlds 2, now is a golden opportunity to dust off your arena colours and get blasting again.

CQC Arena is available 24 hours a day, all days of the expedition - and beyond - and at your beck and call from the game menu, without any interference with your current game.

Every Saturday at 2100 UTC we'll be assembling in the CQC lobby for nothing but CQC matches, both deathmatch and team games, for a few hours. But the fun doesn't stop there - meet up with other like-minded players via the CQC channels (PC and Console) in the Fleetcomm Discord at any time... just give everyone a shout in that channel. Get your friends list on board and form 4-man teams as a fellowship of deathmatchers or for Team DM and Capture The Flag.

More importantly, score additional points for your official DW2 Squadrons in the monthly leaderboard contests! Will your Squadron be the best DW2 Squadron of them all?

JOIN UP NOW.

DistantBowl Announcement!

D1EoYraX4AArQKn.jpg:large

CMDRs! You’ve all been working hard for the CG and being careful with your pride and joy as she transported you to the centre of the galaxy. Before we have to all watch every bump and scratch for the next x0000ly there is time to let our collective hair down with some really stupid ‘flying’. Well, falling really. Very fast. Toward a high G world. With crappy thrusters.

What could possibly go right..?

Yes, it’s DistantBowl; SpeedBowl but right here in the midst of the Expedition!

When: FRI 15 MAR / SAT 16 MAR
Where: PHROI PRI ZU-X E1-6161 AB 2
Contacts/Platform Leads:PrimetimeCasual (PC), DRDel (PS4)
How: Simplified Ruleset:

  • Last screenshot submitted in the official channel counts'
  • The official race venue is given above. Submissions from other locations will not be accepted;
  • All entrants must use normal space thrusters (no frameshift / supercruise / orbital cruise entries accepted);
  • No limitations on flight techniques as long as you stay in normal space and do not exceed the 200km starting altitude;
  • Finish altitude must be below 10 km!;
  • All entrants must submit a screenshot taken at the highest possible velocity with an ingame timestamp visible while below the finish altitude. We strongly recommend recording a video and taking a capture from there;
  • Submissions are on the honour system! This time, it's all about bragging rights and the experience. Start no higher than 200 km, finish below 10 km and survive (VSI neutral, showing you are not falling anymore); and
  • Submission screenshots should be sent to the dedicated channel on FleetComm Discord.

Your mission, should you choose to accept:

Head to the above destination, leave the main star, and look down upon the beauty of the galaxy, laid out in front of you!
Then, for those brave souls willing to risk ship and limb, venture even higher to get the best view possible!
Plot a safe passage into the heavens for jump ranges of all sizes, that will stand for years to come!
Make History

Hello!
ModemusS here!
As you know, we are headed into Week 2 (exploration/CG) of our 3 week stay, and I thought to myself, "What better way to kick it off, than to send off with a week long mini-trek, for....well SCIENCE!" And so, after a bit of thought, a reach out to the community, and a LOT of coffee, Break The Sky Volumes 1 and 2 were born!

Our directive? Well, the system above can be reached by anyone, but above that the stars begin to thin and die out. So I want to chart a route that goes even higher, but still can be reached by mostly anyone. Syroomaei HT-Z D13-28 sits 2600lys above Sag A*, so lets see if we cant make one that goes 3k up, reachable by a 32ly ranged ship.
We will setting up a basecamp at a logical site there, and then we will use that system as a launching point further into the heavens!

Volume 1: Here we will focus on setting up the first basecamp, named Alpha, and beginning our first probes forward. This will run until
Volume 2: This will focus on bringing up a second wave, and leapfrogging off of the found paths from Volume 1's efforts. By this point it is expected that there will be multiple basecamps stretched out further up, locations will be posted here as needed.

For those with medium to low jump ranges, you will be essential in assuring the paths we find are reachable by all, so please, come join us!

Warning: A 26ly ship can reach the destination, but beyond this the stars grow sparse
By proceeding beyond this point you agree that the Fleet cannot assure emergency services coverage
It is highly recommended that you stock up on jumponium before proceeding higher.

Fuel Rats and Hull Seals: We request that you make your presence felt throughout

I have a feeling we're going to need you...

I deleted the 4 posts between Allcrowsareblack and Jon's posts. They were just a discussion about reserving posts, and they are welcome to be asked and answered again. Simply for the sake of organisation.

Please could nobody else reserve posts unless you are on the Distant Worlds organisation team so we can have a home for posting event details for the expedition o7

Hello. Had and idea for some events around geysers and lava spouts.
Geysers:
Geyser Shot:
Cmdrs take turns using geysers to shoot themselves in the air. Scores based on height and style.

Lava Vents
The Hot Seat:
Head to head competition, who can last the longest near a lava vent. First one to back off loses(edited)

Uh.. we tried this at DECE. I mean the height jump. It got a bit nasty turn of events after we had to rescue 4 Cmdrs from the orbit.. :D
So for height jump comp there needs to be gravity more than 0.02 which we had at that unfortunate location.

But nevertheless, its a fun event, and im definitely in for this. :)

Scheduled Time: 20:00 PST

Could I just ask you guys to please give any times for scheduled meetups in UTC / ingame time instead of some arbitrary timezone? Otherwise, this will just create a ton of confusion.

And also if it's really PST, that's a time that will possibly prevent about half of the DW2 fleet from taking part in this event.

Great stuff coming up with games/events around the meetups. Accidentally participated in a Geyser Shot while out exploring yesterday! Didn't know it was possible..

Couple of suggestions:
1. Post dates as well as times (currently the XBox meetup only shows a time...)

2. Do we have alternate-timezone "leaders"? Even if not officially part of the DWE2 organisation team, it'd be great to have events spread across the globe. There's a comment above complaining about an event being in "PST" (whatever that is; please at least also put the UTC+/-xx info in that way it's easy to convert to GameTime (IGT); catering to a global audience here) and half the fleet missing out; well, the converse is also true - if things are only ever organised to be convenient for UTC players, all the non-UTC players always miss out.

3. For people without friends (yet), is there an official way to help find interested people at a mutually convenient time? For example, using doodle.com? (To show an example I created one for the Colours of Clouds - https://doodle.com/poll/ben6bzyekny7p5yf suitable for Australia/eastern Asia (UTC+9); no need to create an account)

and half the fleet missing out; well, the converse is also true - if things are only ever organised to be convenient for UTC players, all the non-UTC players always miss out.

Well, if an event is scheduled for the evening in UTC, most of the Americas can at least still take part. If you however schedule for evening PST, most of Europe will simply be in bed at that time.

Did CG kill the basecamp events this year or was it this way on the first expedition?

I don't see anyone whenever i land on Geosite #5, seems no random activities are taking place.

I was not planning on participating in the events, but spectating or "refereeing" by flying low and recording etc.

Seems not much going on or maybe it's just me.

CG is still going, just wait for the weekend. ;)
