Commanders!

During the Distant Worlds 2 Expedition, pilots are being invited to help build a Science & Exploration Hub at the very center of our Galaxy. It will be constructed at Waypoint 7, in a system neighbouring the supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*.

Vast amounts of material are needed for the construction and because it has been successful in the past, independent pilots are once again being asked to help in the gathering of those materials. When completed, the planned station will be the farthest human outpost ever built. It will offer deep space travelers and future expeditions a welcome rest stop at the very heart of the Milky Way, amongst some of the most iconic and visually stunning locations so far discovered. This is your chance to play a part in this historical chapter of human industrial endeavor and expansion out into the depths.

This thread will be used to provide updates for the coordination of efforts and status on the project as it progresses. The Intergalactic Mining Union (IMU) and the Rock Rats will work closely together developing Resource Acquisition Teams (RATs), and will be on hand to help coordinate mining operations for miners, logistics, and prospecting teams within the Distant Worlds starfleet to ensure that the station is being constructed and outfitted in the most efficient ways possible.

A new age of exploration is about to begin and the participants will stand alongside the founders, creating this scientific complex and explorers oasis for the generations to come!

The Community Goal event will be split in two stages.

STAGE 1

This CG will last one week. It will focus on mining and will require part of the fleet to consist of heavy-industry based vessels (ie. mining, refineries, and transport). The Station at WP 2 will have Outfitting available, where mining-gear can be bought or transferred to, so nobody needs to drag the gear with them. Once the expedition reaches Waypoint 2, mining locations in the area will be scouted and presented in this thread. Resource-Acquisition-Teams [RATs] will coordinate wing mining events to collect as much material as possible and deliver them to a nearby installation ([RP] whereupon it will be used to construct the station superstructure [/RP]).

Whilst RAT’s will focus on wing activities, they will be available to assist other individuals and groups as needed. Waypoint 2 is within 6,000 LYs of the bubble, so pilots wanting to take part should bring what they need for deep space mining operations. Please refer to the IMU Wing Mining Guide on Post #2 and the official Outfitting Guides for a lean and effective build of your ship.

Once this stage is over, the fleet will depart Waypoint 2 and continue its journey, visiting various waypoints along the way at weekly intervals. Several weeks later, as we approach Waypoint 7, close to Sagittarius A*, the new station superstructure will be deployed at the second CG location, and the fleet will head there to begin Stage 2.

Update: Jan 24th 3305 - Stage 1 is finished.

STAGE 2

Stage Two of the Community Goal has started at STUEMEAE FG-Y d7561
, Explorer's Anchorage Starport. We are tasked to mine Water, Liquid Oxygen (both icy rings) and Bauxite (rocky rings). Thanks to the incredible scouting-efforts of CMDR Will T. Riker and his fellow commanders we already know the closest Hotspot-Locations of these materials. They are located here:

Water: Stuemeae GG-Y C893, Planet 5 (2021ls), 12.32ly from CG

Bauxite: Juenae AJ-C C2-1813, Planet A2 (571ls), 9.61ly from CG
Liquid O2: Juenae BC-B D1-8970, Planet A8 (2977ls), 10.35ly from CG

All other results of the scouting can be found in the following spreadsheet. All these materials are best mined by laser-mining and in wings. If you want to wing up please ask in the #dw2-miners - channel in the Fleetcomm discord. Successful completion of this CG will contribute to full station-services at Explorer's Anchorage Starport and will construct a Megaship and an installation around Sagittarius A*. For information about good mining outfits see the iMU mining guide below.

Please note that the fleet will depart Waypoint 7 for Waypoint 8 once the station becomes fully operational, so commanders who wish to unload their mining gear at the new Starport before the trip to the far side begins should be able to do so.

Please note that participation in the DW2 CGs is voluntary. While the CGs are underway, there will all sorts of player-created events and projects to take part in for those who do not want to be part of the Industrial aspects of this expedition. Additionally, the CGs are open to anyone, whether they are part of the DW2 expedition or not.

When people consider mining, they usually think that the last place anyone would want to be is running alongside an extended duration expedition. This, we hope, is all about to change.

Within Distant Worlds, miners take their place alongside the venerable Scientific, Logistics and Exploration Teams, providing their knowledge, experience, grit and determination to facilitate the acquisition of metals and minerals. This role will be crucial to the progress of the expedition itself.

In collaboration with the Rock Rats and the iMU, the expedition gains expertise in, not one, but two variants of prospecting; planetary surface and orbital ring prospecting. These complementary organisations now provide the means and man power to give both fields of research their full attention. In doing so, they will provide the expedition with the core personnel to form the material gathering Resource Acquisition Teams (RATs).

In a fitting testament to the prospecting done during the first Distant Worlds Expedition, the RATs will be responsible for sniffing out, sourcing and returning materials, minerals and metals throughout the journey and ensuring their assignment is completed swiftly and safely. These resources will serve a multitude of purposes for both the expedition and commanders themselves. Becoming a member of the RATs is no small feat. They will be introducing deep space mining further from civilization than anyone before them since the colonisation of Colonia.

As Distant Worlds 2 draws ever closer, the assignments and tasks at hand are coming in thick and fast. The need to spread out the workload has brought about a rodent evolution, leading to sub-tags. With more miners enlisting, it's not surprising that specialized teams are being formed. The 'Union' RATs for instance, represent miners hailing from the Intergalactic Mining Union. It is only a matter of time before more RATs surface to represent their homeworld, their factions and their loyalties. In doing so, they provide an excellent foundation of common understanding to achieve the expedition’s goals and more!

Below are some of the roles and equipment requirements needed for anyone interested in pitching in. But remember! No refinery means no metal or mineral fragments. Without a refinery your ship can only collect materials for synthesis
. Miners and Prospectors can escort Big Rigs to the CG station to benefit from trade dividend vouchers when the goods are sold. (Mined goods transferred to another CMDR currently won’t count for a Mining CG.)

Miner

Minimum Requirement: 1 D1 Mining Laser

Recommended: 2 D2 Mining Lasers (Other mining tools optional)

A small laser is better than none...

The sole purpose of the miner is to increase the number of fragments to be collected and processed. With Mining Lasers weighing only two tons, regardless of class/size, this is the perfect role for Explorers seeking an effective, active role in the aid of the Mining Dept without sacrificing jump range.

By working with a designated refinery vessel, the miner will double the amount of collectible fragments, thus increasing the efficiency of the mining operation by speeding up rate of refined metals and minerals from a single asteroid. This efficiency is not limited to the wing. This method can be applied with multiple wings even if there is only a single refinery vessel in the entire area.

The D1 Mining laser requires a minimum small hardpoint slot. The D2 requires a minimum medium hardpoint slot. They are identical in weight. The difference is in their efficiency. A D2 Mining Lasers efficiency is almost triple that of a D1 Mining Laser.

Miners can also act as prospectors with just a single mining laser by chipping a fragment away from an asteroid and checking its composition. If desired, the miner can call out to the wing and let them know but must remember they will need to hold position at the rock for others as without a Prospector Controller, they have no means of tagging the rock.

Prospector

Minimum Requirements: 1 1A Prospector Limpet Controller, 1 D1 Mining Laser, Cargo Rack

Recommended: 1 3A Prospector, 2 D2 Mining Lasers, Cargo Rack (Other mining tools optional)

Leaving no 'roid unturned...

A prospector’s role is to lead the hunt for the required metals and minerals within the mining operation. By using their Prospector Limpet configured controller, prospectors will target asteroids, take a reading of their composition and signal to both refinery vessel/wing that they have uncovered the desired resource. Forward scouting is crucial in reducing downtime within the operation caused by travel from asteroid to asteroid.

Please be aware!
Prospecting pilots must refrain from the temptation of D rated Prospector Limpet Controllers. The reduction in class greatly reduces the amount of fragments produced from an asteroid. If necessary, commanders can add lightweight engineering for the controllers to reduce their mass.

Both miners and prospectors can profit from their help if they have cargo bays. These can be used to ferry additional limpets to the refinery ships in exchange for processed material they can turn in at the CG venue. Adding a 1D collector can help facilitate any transfers.

Big Rig

Minimum Requirements:
1A rated Prospector Limpet Controller, 1D rated Collector Limpet Controller, 1A Refinery, D1 Mining Laser, Cargo Rack

Recommended: 3A Prospector Limpet Controller, 5D Collector Limpet Controller, 4A Refinery, 2 D2 Mining Lasers, 6/7/8E Cargo Rack, Deep Core mining equipment recommended.

The bigger the better...

The Big Rigs are the ultimate mining vessel. They're not only the most important part of the wing for refining the fragments but they also have the ability to mine solo. Armed with everything it takes to mine the belts, it may take a great amount of determination to make the journey, but once arrived these ships come into their own. Taking on the Big Rig will be a sure fire way of putting your stamp on the expedition and without doubt a feat worthy of galactic recognition.

Sapper

Minimum Requirements: 1 1A Prospector, D1 Mining Laser, Any Mining Deposit Tool (Abrasion Blaster, Sub Surface Displacement Missile, Seismic Charge), Pulse Wave Analyser

Recommended: 1 3A Prospector Controller, 2 D2 Mining Lasers, Abrasion Blaster, Sub Surface Displacement Missile, Seismic Charge, Pulse Wave Analyser, Cargo Space

The sapper will be in charge of getting the most out of the rocks. With their new mining technologies, they will be responsible for removing deposits from asteroids, drilling them and/or fracturing the asteroids to enable a refining vessel to collect as much as possible. A sapper will also have the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the other pilots in the vicinity as the seismic charges are dangerous and could damage ships and fighters. Failure to ensure the safety of fellow commanders will result in immediate investigation from expedition authorities.

Awesome stuff guys.

To the tl;dr folks like me who see a wall of text, no matter how awesome, and decide to guess what everything says and go away happy, please realise how amazing this is going to be. The second post outlines some INCREEEDDDDIIIBBBBLLLEEE and really fun sounding ways that we are planning on turning this into a massive group event, with intersecting roles designed to turn it from a rabble of miners into a smoothly oiled machine.

If you end up making lots of new friends (you can also just play in solo because you hate people, that's ok too), you have to send big thanks for that special awesome to the Rock Rats and the IMU, especially Polish Dan.

Is it too late to get Frontier to add a station or surface port with large landing pads to Pallaeni, where DW2 is kicking off? Pallaeni only has two orbital outposts with nothing bigger than medium pads, which strikes me as insufficient to serve as a staging point for an expedition with almost 4,000 pledged members.

Obviously it's not a big deal or a priority since Pallaeni is just the departure point, but I feel that an event of this size deserves to "go big" and get some in-game recognition beyond just a tourist beacon.

As you said, Pallaeni is just the staging point. There are plenty of systems around that offer large-pad docking. As stated in the OP we will have the opportunity to get a station around Sag A*, which for itself is already something awesome. But FD are involved in the DW2-expedition in many more ways and we are expecting it to go big. :D

Pallaeni was selected for its sentimental value, as it was the starting point of CMDR Kamzel in the Distant Suns expedition

You mentioned transport also. Is this about mining ships capacity, or will there be a role for dedicated transport ships as well, say picking up cargo from a station to ferry to the CG location?

No, there will be no commodities involved (no trading-CG). Due to the distances we decided for a mining-CG.

Will there be supply ships carrying nothing but limpets to share around those who have prospector and collection controllers?

While you can synthesise limpets, the 120 you can make with 300 units each of iron and nickel won't last very long on a one-week CG.

Or, is it expected we'll be scooping fragments rather than collecting them with limpets?

Edited: Read the OP fully and see the mention of cargo racks w. limpets.

The limpet supply doesn't have to be synthesised, the stations that the CGs are set at will have limpets that can be bought and delivered to the fleet

Hopefully this isn't asked already but is it known if the station at waypoint 2 is going to allow transfer of parts (has outfitting)? If so, I do like to blow up some rocks. Not so much into the old school mining.

So does that mean the “deployed station superstructure” present when we reach Waypoint 7 will be partially operational already, with limpet restocking available?

Will outfitting also be available so we can transfer modules from the bubble to Waypoint 7, or do we need to carry all of our equipment with us for the first half of the journey? I might have to adjust my Phantom build depending on the answer to this question.

That's how it is planned. Final confirmation from FD pending. If we get basic outfitting at the new superstructure, we can transfer. If not, people will have to bite the bullet and drag their mining equipment along to Sag A*. Getting outfitting and other station services is mainly the purpose of stage 2 of the CG event. Just in case we won't get the transfer option please test some of the mining builds mentioned above and choose one that satisfies you.
