[DW2] Distant Worlds 2 - A Journey of Discovery

There's now a Beagle Point beacon in space near the main star commemorating DWE2:

"Distant Worlds II was an ambitious five-month expedition to the far outer rim. It launched from the Pallaeni system in January 3305 and reached its final destination of Beagle Point in May 3305. The purpose of the expedition was to unravel the mysteries of the galaxy, and to construct a startport at Sagittarious A*.
This beacon marks the final Distant Worlds rendezvous point, which was visited by 3,747 Commanders during the expedition."

Yeah I saw that. Erimus mentioned one at the basecamp, which is why I checked. Needed to land there anyway for a video I'm making.

Depends on where you cross. Coming back from the rim I touched the western perimeter at times. With 55 ly range it took me three weeks of manually plotting boosted jumps. Stopped opportunistically to gather materials, otherwise I'd have run out of germanium for sure. Definitely a neat experience!
True.. can always push the boundaries. But I meant going more or less straight. One highlight of my DW1 trip was spending several weeks crossing the Abyss in a 33LY Asp trying to find a more "western" route. Ended up having to use a couple of jumponiums, so failed.

Yep; was wondering whether it was miscommunication/confusion between Erimus and FDev. Would be neat to have an actual signal/waypoint at the Basecamp.

Would be even neater if we could deploy them for our friends/squad/everybody, although I guess the Galaxy would get swamped pretty quickly. At least the popular places.

I initially asked if it could be a surface beacon for BP - at the basecamp, but it looks like FDev couldn't/wouldn't place it there.

Still nice to have a beacon in system for DW2. Would have been really nice to have it the basecamp though. I took a little cryo-nap so I'm still at the basecamp as well. Periodically wake up and take a little spin in the SRV and enjoy the sights.

I'll probably start a slow return journey aiming to reach the bubble around the end of the year.

Lol, sounds like there's quite a few of us still camping out here.

Who's up for organising a date/time to have a meetup?

Hey Maia, can you check the surface basecamp on Beagle Point, planet 2. It was supposed to get a DW2 beacon at some point, I'm not sure if it has yet (other locations received theirs already).
Sadly it was not I whom I was referring to. I got half way back, then turned around and escorted a friend out...a friend who had started the expedition with us but had been held up after WP3 due to real life issues. She made it a few days before the closing date :) She is camping out there while dealing with other RL issues.
As for me, I literally just finally made it back to the bubble about 4 hours ago.

Just returned from my DW2 Exploration trip set off JAN 3305 - FEB 3306, I didn't see another ship the whole time :)

I'm still within 500 LY of Beagle Point. Saw some folks at way-points and at BP, but never while travelling. Thinking I'll be back in the bubble around the year-end holidays this year. Congrats on the safe return AliJax!

I'm going to write a more in depth report in general discussion once the space madness pills have reactivated the sane side of my brain, but I returned last Wednesday from DW2, did a wee tour into Acheron (where the madness kicked in), then into Mare Somnia, then headed back to within a few thousand LYs, then turned round back to Core ("East" side), headed across to Colonia, then returned via '7 o'clock').

I have hundreds of lovely pictures, but probably the most pertinent one to this post is this one..

Just found this nice overview of the DW2 pictures: https://dw2expedition.wixsite.com/home/photo-gallery

Is there a way to download the unedited versions (without DW2 logo and cmdr name)? Would like to show the contest winners to some friends and would prefer the ingame version. In the newsletters the unedited versions were used, but perhaps there is a imgur album somewhere... Thanks.

Actually, I'm going to have to bump this to say that no one was as far behind as me. A number of real world things came up and, much to my disappointment I was unable to really continue on the DW2 expedition at the time. While I and a friend was there for day one and a few points of interest along the way, I ended up having to basically give up. In fact, for a long time I wasn't even on Elite Dangerous much at all. I've always been kind of upset about that. I'm proud to announce that I finally reached Beagle Point. It took me forever to do it and I ended up completely out of the expedition in my delays, but at last I did finally actually get to Beagle Point. I'm not proud of the lack of playing, but I am proud that I ultimately stuck it out and did get here.

Congrats on reaching the end goal Nazo (y)

If its any comfort, I heard from a guy a few months ago whose still out there from the DW1 days, and hasn't made it back yet from that first expedition! I'm sure there are others still out there too - still following the DW1 or DW2 routes and visiting the POIs and basecamps along the way, after all this time.

Heck, I'd recommend the DW2 route to anyone new to the game who has an interest in extreme-long-range exploration and wants to see some of the more amazing places in the game. I didn't finally get back to Explorer's Anchorage on my exploration account until June 2020...

IMO, the view of the Milky Way from Semotus Beacon is enough to justify the trip. I still have that as my desktop background on my computer.

I hope I could make it on time by the time the Christmas sale starts since I missed the Black Friday one. Good luck to the people that will be joining the event.
