Module: 0E Shieldbooster = E-rated (Shield Boosters deviate from the normal rule of D-rated being the lightest)

Engineering: Grade 1-5 Heavy Duty + Super Capacitors.

That's the best bet for pure exploration purposes (= against collision damage).

If you want to know what materials you'll need: https://inara.cz/galaxy-blueprint/8/

Thanks, I've just added 3 G3's to my Anaconda. It's now finished (part two). :D

Another thing that commanders may want to do is stock up on materials needed for synthesis for exampling refilling the AFMU
Good idea.

Most materials relevant to an explorer can be gotten along the way, as they are just elements. This includes recharges of the new mining tools that take ammo.

What I recommend spending time on first is manufactured materials for basic grade of refilling heat sinks (and chaff, if you pop often say for celebratory reasons). Here is the complete list of what you cannot get outside of civilised space and which is of relevance to an unarmed explorer:

Heat sinks:
Basic conductors (needed to synth all three grades)
Heat conduction wiring (again for all three grades)
Heat exchangers (for standard and premium)
Proto heat radiators (for premium only)

Chaff:
Compact composites (all three grades)
Filament composites (all three grades)
Thermic alloys (standard and premium)
Proto radiolic alloys (premium)

List has been added for Heat Sink Launchers & Chaff, as well as a link to inara's synthesis page for full details on all recipes.

Not that carrying any of the Mats is detrimental in any way, but why are we going to need Chaff? I was considering going unarmed, to save weight. Am I making a mistake?

People usually carry chaff to release at meetups. It looks like fireworks and is fun to play with. But, it also slows down everyone's frame rate.
If I bring a fighter bay, I usually bring a fighter equipped with Chaff since fighters get free refills.

That's an impressive video. I didn't see any chaff, but the number of ship's was amazing.
How many? Shame the game froze.

A couple of ships were releasing chaff in that cluster at the time index I linked (~22sec). (particles spraying)
That was the small worlds 3 expedition launch. I could only guess at the number of ships but it was one of the largest instances I've been in.

There must be 40 - 50 ships!
Saw the chaff this time 😀
Interesting point re fighter and chaff. I'll have to have a look at that.

Day 1 of the Prep Week has started - with great news for unlocking Hera Tani!

UPDATE: With the release of chapter 4, max. allocations of rares have changed so that the maximum one can buy at one time during certain states is a lot higher than it used to be. As a result it is now possible to collect 50t of Kamitra Cigars in one go from Hammel Terminal in the Kamitra system. You can therefore do this on your own and in your own time throughout the week - so we will not be distributing Kamitra Cigars!

A big shout-out to the Winged Hussars and all other commanders who have aided in creating the system state for this to be possible. :) (And to the Teabaggers for the contingency plan ;) )

Awesome, this will make things much easier when I'm unlocking Hera Tani tomorrow. Luckily, the Empire rank up today went much quicker than I thought.

Why Selene Jean for exploration? The Grade 5 Heavy Duty + Deep Plating applied to stock Lightweight Alloy Bulkheads greatly increases integrity with no increase in mass. This helps survive an accidental collision or excessive heat damage. It is not a necessity, but you will need to unlock her to gain access to Didi Vatermann and Bill turner (see bellow).

Prerequisites (what you need to have done on your own): Have accessed Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn up to grade 3-4 to discover Selene Jean in-game.

Where we can help to unlock: To receive an invite for Selene Jean you need to refine 500 ores. But you needn't do it alone, and we can help you get up to speed with the new mining mechanics in the process so you are prepared to help out in the upcoming Distant Worlds 2 Community Goal.

The mining location will be chosen specifically so you get your supply of 10t Painite to then unlock Selene Jean in due time. Alternatively, we may also offer distribution of Painite upon request so you can get right to the engineering. We welcome any experienced miners to help out and share your knowledge!

Thanks to CMDR Polish_Dan & the iMU, a guide has been created specifically on the new mining mechanics that you can view here.

Why Bill Turner for exploration? Aside from Lori Jameson, who requires a combat rank of Dangerous and at least one Elite rank to unlock, Bill Turner is the only engineer for Life Support. There are two reasons why this engineering is interesting for explorers:

1. Grade 3 Lightweight applied to a D-rated Life Support reduces mass and thus increases jump range.
2. Grade 3 Lightweight to an A-rated Life Support reduces mass slightly lower than that of a standard D-rated, while gaining you an extra 17m 30s of oxygen supply before needing to synthesise to resupply oxygen in the (extremely rare) case that your canopy breaks.

Prerequisites (what you need to have done on your own): Have accessed Selene Jean up to grade 3-4, be friendly with the Alliance, and have the Alioth Permit to discover and receive an invite for Bill Turner.

Where we can help: To unlock you will need 50t of Bromellite. Our dedicated Mining Department in co-operation with the iMU and numerous voluntary CMDRs will offer distribution of Bromellite upon request so you can get right to the engineering. Again, we welcome any experienced miners to help out and share your knowledge!

Why Shield Boosters for exploration? That is a very good question, that the DW2 Outfitting team investigated extensively over the last few weeks.

In short: the more MJ you have, the better your chances of surviving collisions with surfaces or other CMDRs.

In detail: Your ship's mass, shield class and any resistances are completely irrelevant during collisions. Only the MJ and speed are taken into account, as well as a ship-specific factor that defines how many MJ that ship requires to withstand the impact (which we have yet to determine). Also bear in mind that damage received through collisions with planetary surfaces can be quite random due to the surface/angle/internet lag/etc during impact, so it's best to be a little generous with the MJ you apply, within reason.

Engineered 0E Shield Boosters allow for a significant increase of MJ at very little mass. Example: grade 1 Heavy Duty + Super Capacitors allows for a 20.1% MJ increase at just 1t of additional mass; grade 5 can do 50.7% MJ increase at just 2t. The former is already nearly the equivalent to equipping a shield generator one class higher, therefore allowing you to prioritise larger optional internal slots for other modules, or simply to keep mass at a minimum without sacrificing safety.

Aliens have been known to have weapons and target expeditions. True story.

GNOSIS happened! What if they'd sent in real warships? What if those brave Commanders hadn't led them away with Meta Alloys?

Sensor recording from GNOSIS expedition...maybe...

...And shields. I am probably NOT scraping you up from a 6g splat!

Due to a higher than normal sign-up rate, delays in the roster verification process are to be expected. Therefore it can take several days before your data has been processed.

If it has been more than one week, please post in this thread here, or the #dw2-roster-n-admin-help channel on the FleetComm discord. Thank you!

I already need to edit my Google Sheet info..how do I do this?

To edit your roster sign-up info after you've sent the form, you should have saved the edit link before hand. If you do not have that edit link, please post in this thread here, or the #dw2-roster-n-admin-help channel on the FleetComm discord with the following information:

Commander: [Your commander name without the CMDR]
Roster #: [Your Roster #, see the Official Fleet Roster here to find it]
Changes: [Write here what you want to change]

Thank you!

Can we expect to use mining & discovery reports to know where to gather FSD injection materials? I'm trying to fit an Anaconda for discovery/mining but I'm kind of a noob and still can't get more than 21Ly jumps. By now FSD injections are my only hope to get past Beagle on the way back.

You should post a link to your build and ask get some specific advice. Even assuming you have no engineers or the Guardian FSD booster unlocked, that's appalling. In short:
1. Start with necessary basics: Lightweight Armour; A-rated FSD; D-rated life support & sensors; add all your basic exploration gear (DSS, SRV hanger, fuel scoop, AMFUs); basic shield
2. Then add any extras you want: repair limpets, collector limpets, fighter Bay, etc.
3. Then add the smallest/lightest PP & PD to run it all.

Here's a very basic quick example (no Guardian booster, no engineering) with 2 SRVs, 2 fighters, 2 AMFUs, Fuel Scoop, DSS, heat sink launcher, Xeno Scanner, and 3 large MCs, which gets 32ly (60 with an engineered FSD & booster): https://s.orbis.zone/1tjy or https://s.orbis.zone/1tkd

Yes. I was fitting it for a heavy combat build when I heard about the expedition and I have a mess right now (that's the reason FSD range is so low). Only engineer I have unlocked is Farseer and I have already upgraded the FSD range, but that's about it.

Thing is I really don't know how dangerous it might get out there so I don't know how heavy to equip it armor and weapons wise.

Where do you say I can post my build to get some advice?
