Fellow travelers and explorers,
It has been 2,215 days since Distant Worlds 2 officially ended.
People have moved on, many have grown, some have passed, others took a long break from our Galaxy.
Will you answer the call?
I am — we, the whole DW3 org team, are very excited to declare the…
Distant Worlds 3 signups OPEN
But first...
PLEASE read this post carefully. There is NO point in rushing to sign up your CMDR, for there are no early Roster numbers to grab.
Alright! So what's new?

But first...

Alright! So what's new?
~~~~~
Our tools, our skills, our means have evolved. Compared to previous expeditions, there is quite a bit of change.
1. THE WEBSITE
We've chosen to gather everything in one place, instead of multiplying the forum threads, Discord posts, etc. Every relevant piece of information will be published and hosted on the website; while the most important logistical info will be relayed to the FleetComm Discord server, as per usual. This is the work of Rixxan, Kenny Rosser, KingKumquat and myself.
In order to make it as accessible as possible, we do not require any email to create your player account. You may add one, though, for password recovery and/or rare informative emails (newsletter, memorabilia...) We strongly invite you to read the FAQ, you may find answers to your question(s).
Some content isn't currently online on the website. As we approach the launch date, relevant sections will open; we'll inform you via announcements.
2. SIGNING UP TO THE EXPEDITION
2.a The process
Consequently, you sign up to DW3 via the website. The signup process involves two steps:
- Firstly, you create your PLAYER account. This is you; you can use any name whatsoever.
- Secondly, when logged in, you sign up your COMMANDER.
What's also new this time around is the ability to apply for up to 3 CMDRs per player account. Similarly, you can register up to 6 ships per signed up CMDR.
So, to sum up: 1 player > (max) 3 Commanders > (max) 18 ships.
When logged in, you will be able to amend any piece of your signup's information (no more edit link!
2.b.1 The expeditionary roles
A variety of roles are available; some of them tied to the planned projects and events. Although you can take part in anything, you're invited to select one role as your primary role — by default, this role is set to Explorer. This role will be displayed on your Roster entry. You can input a secondary and a tertiary role as well. It is thus highly recommended to read about the projects and events before signing up.
Similarly, ships have selectable roles (one per): if none is selected, it defaults to Explorer.
Seeing as any ship can do (almost) any task, these roles are mainly role-play. They won't impact your place in the expedition at all.
CMDR ROLES | SHIP ROLES |
Explorer (default) | Explorer (default) |
Scientist | Stellar & Planetary Explorer |
Fuel Rat | Fleet Support |
Hull Seal | Fleet Support |
Miner | Miner |
Hitchhiker | |
Shuttle Service Pilot | Passenger Shuttle |
Fleet Environmental Officer | Fleet Support |
Event Location Scout | Scout |
Medicorp | Fleet Support |
Racer | |
Cargo Hauler |
2.b.2 The projects & events
Distant Worlds 3 will centre around a primary project, The Scientific Survey, supported by several additional events. Some of these will feature sub-missions and quests run through MetaElite. More detailed information about these projects and events will be posted later this year in the main DW3 Expedition thread on the Frontier Exploration Forum, as well as on the website, naturally — where you can already find for each of them a summary, to give you a general idea of what each of them entails. Applying to a project or event, however, will be made available later in the year, when we've locked down the specifics.
The planned components include:
- Introduction to MetaElite,
- The Scientific Survey,
- Shoulder of Orion,
- Search for Earth 2.0,
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,
- Outlander Challenge,
- DSSA Lost Carrier Event,
- Rawrunner Challenge,
- “Story So Far” – the DW3 background narrative
2.c The Roster number
Your Roster # is one-third customisable, one-third dependent on your CMDR's primary role, and one-third randomly generated. There will thus be no early numbers up for grabs, meaning there is no point in skipping this post to sign up as quickly as possible. Bear in mind that once your Roster # has been granted, it will not be amendable, even if you change your primary role.
2.d The Ship callsign
The callsign is entirely customisable. If you don't input a custom one, you will be offered one by default, dependent on the ship's expeditionary role.
3. FLEETCOMM
This stays the same: the FleetComm Discord server will be the only official comms network for the expedition.
What's new, however, is that the expedition news and waypoints channels will be announcement channels: you will thus be able to follow them directly into your own server. We hope this will improve coordination and the relaying of logistical intel.
A set of roles has been put in place according to the expedition's proposed events and projects: be sure to assign them to yourself if you plan to enlist!
4. EXPEDITION DETAILS & UPCOMING EVENTS
In similar fashion to DW2, a complete outline and presentation of the expedition will be posted in a few months by Erimus, much closer to launch.
In the meantime, we’re also planning some lead-up events tied to DW3 later this year. These will be smaller, but still very much connected to the main expedition. Think of them as a warm-up or a way to meet other Commanders before the big one kicks off. When we’re ready to share dates and details, we’ll post them on FleetComm. So if you’re interested, keep an eye out here. Thanks for your patience while we got all this ready.
Happy signups — see you in the black, CMDRs o7
