DW3 Ship Builds

Should I bring a mining ship to help with carrier refueling? I've never really done much mining of any kind and I have no idea how much effort it takes to refuel a carrier.

It looks like most players only have a single ship registered which means most probably won't be doing any mining.

In DW2, some players just brought some mining lasers and just let the fully equipped, dedicated mining ships do the rest of the work.

Though I'm not sure what the setup is in DW3 🤷‍♂️

Wing mining should be possible, although the mining will be a lot more irregularly spaced than the big CGs of DW2.

I also have just 1 ship registered, my main exploration build.
But that doesn't mean I won't bring other ships with me.

I have yet to decide, which ones that will be.
Much will depend on what FDev has planned for the end of this year.

Since the official carriers will have outfitting, you can just store different loadouts. That's what I'll be doing with my Anaconda: exploration, hauler, mining outfit. I'll also keep the Mandalay handy as a planetary explorer and maybe a meet-up taxi, as well as an iEagle for racing.

So, a lot has changed since I started this thread. The Caspian Explorer is a thing now and quickly rose to the #2 most popular ship.
I also made quite a few changes to my planned build. I have been tweaking the engineering here and there and changed my mind more than once about a few compromises.
As of this week though, I'm done. All the engineering is done and my builds are final.

Only 57 players have six ships registered and I'm one of them. Two large, two medium and two small ships. Three new ships and three old ships.
A Mandalay and a Caspian of course, and a Cobra Mk V because it's fun to fly.
I haven't decided between the Mandalay and the Caspian for my main ship and the MkV is ideal for exobiology.
I'm also bringing the Python I took on Distant Worlds 2, the Courier I took on Small Worlds 3 and the long range Anaconda I flew for years on solo exploration tips.
It's good to have options, right?

What are your builds now that we're less than a month from launch?
What was your build philosophy? Did you build for max range, or max comfort?

Same build on my Mandalay from the start of the thread.

Here's my Caspian (the full kitchen sink build): https://edsy.org/s/v1hqpi3

Not sure if I'll take anything else, maybe a CobraV...

I hope this gets seen before DW3 launch. I have a couple of questions:

1) I'm bringing several ships on DW3, hoping that I have a good ship for any events. These include: 2 miners, 1 racer, a couple of general purpose ships, a couple of exploration ships including a specific one for exobiology. Is there a recommendation list somewhere that might give some hints at the kinds of events that will take place?

2) Will any of the official DW3 Fleet carriers have an operational Outfitting? I would like to also take some swappable modules to increase flexibility.

Thanks in advance for any advice or official info!

2. All carriers do have outfitting but no modules for sale. You can store modules.
1. from the new player guide ...

The DW3 backstory hints at the likelihood of alien & guardian interactions. So is anyone equipping their exploration ship with caustic sink launcher & xeno scanner? And what about a laser to activate those guardian beacons etc?

I've been thinking for last two weeks what Cmdr to send, my Main or my Alt...
After reading (above) Iv'e decided to take my Main :) ( Thanks Jorki :)

So I will be stowing a Mandy, T-11, Eagle, Arx Titan Bomber ( Its worth it alone so I can remove the Moth Balls ) Arx AX Chieftain (Cos ya never know) and others... o7

My word, the word "overboard" comes to mind! Five ships?? :)

I'm taking my Mandy in explorer/exobiology build:

I was contemplating a mining python as well. I do enjoy mining, but not sure I can be bothered - too much to do IRL at the moment!

Just be aware from DW2 experience - I was shunned during mining activities as I went armed "just in case"! You really shouldnt need to be armed in Fleetcom PG.

Edit
But the background story seems to strongly hint at the possibility of alien interactions - are FD finally going to open up one or more hitherto-locked sectors to reveal a new species? I think the Rogue AI possibility is also hinted. Is this just storytelling based on previous narrative lines or is there a real possibility of exploration builds encountering hostile aliens? It does make a difference to the loadout plans! While playing within Fleetcom PG should minimise (may not stop!) human griefing it won't stop hostile NPCs

It's fan fiction.
In my opinion, doing things that way would be a terrible idea from Frontier: from outside the expedition, they'd be accused of favouritism (rightfully so), and from inside it, a lot of people wouldn't be happy about encountering and getting killed by hostiles that they aren't prepared for at all.

In any case, it's always a good idea to build your ship with good defenses, since unexpected accidents can, and eventually will, happen. Personally, I do worst-case crash tests on my new exploration ships: four pips to Engines, and slam head-on into the ground at maximum boost speed. If that doesn't send you to the rebuy screen, then you're set.

I'm taking Adder and DBX. Been also thinking about bringing a T8 or a Python in cargo/collector variant in case something happens involving the delivery of materials, for example, for port construction. Uh, I don't know...

You play how you want mate! That's what it's all about! On DW2 I just took a Phantom but had mining gear held in Explorers Anchorage outfitting so swapped as necessary. But I accept the new mining ship is probably worth taking if you're into that.

It's a bit of a faff taking multiple ships out all that way to the start line, and may be even more of a faff getting them back, depending on where the FC end their travels. On DW2 it effectively ended at BP so I made my way to Colonia, finding plenty of undiscovered BH enroute
