Hardware & Technical Early for a computer spec check?

Hi,

I can't wait for this to finally be released, but at the moment I am even greater need of a PC update.
I was all set to push the "buy" button and then I thought I had better check to see if anyone had any thoughts on which way to go on graphics cards.
I don't know if Elite is going to be as highly graphic intensive as some of the current games on the market, but I am grabbing myself this basic spec.
CPU i7-3770k, MB ASUS Sabertooth Z77, RAM 16Gb Kingston HyperX Beast 2400.

My decider item is do I go for GEForce or Radeon, or will it not actually make a blind bit of difference?
I'm comparing the 4GB NVIDIA GTX 680 and the 3GB Radeon HD7970

Thanks

I remember reading an article in PC Format where benchmarks showed that modern NVidia cards seem to work faster in Intel chipset systems, while AMD/ATI cards seem to be more optimised in AMD chipset systems. There's not too much difference in it, but you might be able to get a few FPS extra out of it that way.

I would say go NVidia, as ATI drivers have a history of not being great,

as most if not all of their driver updates deal with games not working. while Nvidia updates appear to just increase performance of games by upto 50%

My preference would be Nvidia (especially for OpenGL), but some people swear by ATI/AMD.
One thing: be sure to buy a quality PSU for that rig.

amen to that, the cheap stuff costs you more in the long run, I'd go with something like a BQ Darkpower Pro 10 850w semi modular - you got 5 years to blow it up to get a new one free as it's got a better than average warranty.

I hope my 1gig AMD card will cut it haven't got enough money for a 3gig monster card at the moment what with pledging everything to E:D

From what little I've read, the main thing seems to be 3Gb, seems to be the minimum you want on your graphics card, as this helps with processing the graphic information and generally keeping the frame rate even. After that it all boils down to how much your willing to spend, as to what level of frame rate your likely to be looking at, as well as what bells and whistles you can turn on in games. Now there are games that seem to favour one graphic card company over another and that the better your processor the better the game runs, even the resolution you run the game at can effect the frame rate. In some cases lower end graphics cards can produce a better result.

I've seen some recommendations for the AMD FX-8350 processor, as it will match the PS4 specs quite well, being 8-core AMD.

I've got the 3.5ghz per core version, blisteringly fast especially matched with an SSD and a good amount of ram, overclocks well too; i had mine running stable at 4.0 ghz a core until the cheap and nasty psu i was using went pop.

iv built a new comp last month, it`s a ASUS P8Z77-V PRO, i7-3770 3,40 16 GB Kingston DDR3 HyperX, a 128 GB ssd hd and a geforce gtx 550 ti (im buying a better grafic card later this year), and a 4 TB segate HD as a secondary disc, and a nice 27" benq monitor (got a 750 psu)

As a current rule of thumb, AMD will give you more bang for your buck but nVidia will likely have better support.

Unfortunately the answer still lies in exactly what you want to do with the hardware. Different software will utilise the system in different ways, all we know about E: D so far is that it is likely to be GPU bound.

The 680 is probably better at tessellation but the Radeon has better throughput will the stream processor count. It all depends on how Frontier use what is there, so the answer is 'yes' it is too soon for a spec check ;)

Think I'll try the i7-3770k then and the 4Gb NVidia GTX 680.
Thanks for the info on the PSU though.

no problem, if i can save someone the horror story I've had replacing the PSU so much the better, the first one turned up dead and because i naturally amused the board had blown when the original PSU went i ending buying another motherboard i didn't need. it was only when that one didn't boot either that i borrowed a psu tester from a friend and found out i'd been sent a DOA power supply. :(

hardware specs I have and am prepared to upgrade

I have an imac 27" 2gb ATI graphics, but … i will be playing elite dangerous on my quad core OC'ed PC and will add additional hardware at the point to play it at full specs, prepared currently to upgrade at minimum to a gtx660 desktop card and at least be running 4 cores at 4ghz, pity intel doesnt seem to be adding transistor count and performance to the cheapest unlocked quad core in their range or adding more cores cheaply, as 3d and 60fps 1080p will be the minimum quality i want to play ED at, so I think even 4 cores at 4ghz and a 2gb desktop graphics card will only just be sufficient by the time ED comes out.

Will I need to upgrade? I want to run this game on MAX with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

I have at the minute:

Windows 8
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 Vapor-X OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 @3ghz
Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
Kingston HyperX 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400
Sandisk Extreme SSD

I know people have moved onto Core i7 BUT if I do change CPU my motherboard and RAM will need renewing as well unless I just change my graphics card! Please give me IDEAL machine and what YOU suggest thanks

IT won't be long until Alpha is out... so I'd be patient a little while longer for a spec idea...

I would hate to guess.. but I have i7 so I don't care!! :D

If you just change the graphics card the rest of the system will be a bottleneck, so you won't get much performance increase. It will need to be a full upgrade (ram, cpu, motherboard, maybe a PSU as well).

Well my system close to what your is but as a laptop & is a Intel i7. My suggestion is Wait and see. We should see some price drops at the time because New hardware will be released in a month or two afterwords.
