Horizons ECM

Ok this might be a dumb question but how is ECM utilised in ED?

I can put one on my platform but I cant find a key to toggle it on and off. Is it automatic and what exactly does it do to NPC and other players locking ability to my ship?

You need to assign it to a fire group, like a weapon. The longer you hold a fire button, the bigger radius it cover, up to 3 km.

It only works against incoming torpedo's & seeker missiles, it won't prevent a player or NPC from locking onto your ship. As Dregory explained, ECM only needs to be held down long enough to cover the radius you need to protect, the scanner will show the radius arc as it expands to protect the ship. Release the trigger as soon as the arc intersects with the scanner image of the incoming projectile.

Well not like chaff because I have that assigned to a seperate button. seems strage I can assign one and not the other.

That's what I'm saying! :p
It's strange, yes, but because it's used more like a "passive weapon" rather than a countermeasure, I don't mind having it on secondary fire. Nothing is better than seeing a ship being hit by their own torpedoes. :D

Wait, it can cause the missile/torpedo to lock onto the ship that fired it? That makes it much more potent. I knew it would cause the missile/torpedo to lose a lock, didn't realize it would cause it to turn and seek out a different target.

If a torpedo lost its lock on you (ECM, Chaff, or if you go silent running while it's still sufficiently far away), there is a chance that it's going to lock onto another ship in its range, the attacker's ship included. ;)

Torpedoes are stupid. :D
