ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

GTX 670 (2gb) edition here... and yes, whilst it only runs on low, ED is still an incredible experience, better than high on a single screen that is for sure.

Live for speed also runs exceptionally well (on low).

basically, what Sony said is true... in VR graphical fidelity is way less important than the immersion.

of course the joy of being a pc gamer is you can put up with low for now, and then up the eye candy when you have the money.

unless you are thinking of touting your unit for a profit, you may as well open it up and suck it and see.

The scary thing is, the DK2 is low res........... when the CV1 comes out chances are, unless the SDK or all games supporting the rift are heavily optimised from where they are now, the demands are going to shoot up even more.

Well my OR arrived today, but other than opening the box to have a quick look I have yet to unwrap it.

Alas events have meant I have been unable to afford the GFX card I need to run this thing, after purchasing it on the spur of the moment amongst the hype I kinda missed the bit where you need a 780ti or greater to run it properly. My mistake of course, but the family totally unreasonably want a holiday instead rather than me spending 400pounds or more on a gfx card...

So I am stuck with a boxed DK2 for the moment :-(

I'm running a GTX670 OC'ed and a 3570K OC'ed @ 4,2. I get 75fps in space but 60ish in the station. Going to buy the GTX880 this fall. And after it's released it should push down the prices on the older GPU's.

My gaming laptop runs a GeForce 670MX and the game runs just fairly playable 20-30 fps no matter if I use low med or high settings, barely notice any difference in FPS.

I suspect since we are still in beta tho there is a lot of debugging code running in the game slowing it down like with most game betas. I have no hope in running OR on the laptop tho. Home PC with R9 290X runs the game more or less stable at 100 FPS on max settings. :)

Huh, strange. I run everything on MAX on live for speed. I even downsample from 1440p and I have 250-300fps :S

Gainward GTX670 2GB and i53570K OC @ 4,2

I did read on the OR forum they are working on releasing a new sdk soon so hopefully their side of the code might give a improvement in FPS, when FD update the game to run on the 0.4 OR sdk hopefully that will make a difference as well.

And with further code optimisation aw we go along, hopefully the FPS will creep up a bit on each release.

ditto........ BTW slight aside but when considering a GPU imo always check out the Zotac cards 1st.

IME a zotac card will cost less than a reference card from other brands and yet they come pre overclocked out of the box and have a superior cooling solution.

I know that will be top of my list when looking for a GTX 880.

Amazon Warehouse is always good for a deal or two as well. Picked up a returned and completely unopened Windforce 780 Ghz edition for just over £330 last week.

Sell the family, buy GFX card.

Problem solved. :D

What card do you have? I'm runing a ATI 7870 and it's coping ok(ish) Hoping the judder will be fixed by a SDK update etc.

ASUS GeForce 670 GTX 4gb
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme (motherboard) & i7 3820 @ 3.8ghz
32GB RAM
Run at 2560 x 1440 at 60fps in all areas (without OR).

GET IT INSTALLED....:D

Don't wait...do it now. :D

The OR demo FD did @ E3 as on to GTX 770's according to two people that were there and would know. As soon as my DK2 arrives I'm going to try it.

I'm confused... that's rather a high spec is it not? Probably enough to even try supersampling.

Well yes, in theory, but from reading the forum I was under the impression that this was specifically GPU heavy and as a result running on anything under a standard GeForce 780 was tricky to get desirable frame-rates.

I apologise if I have misunderstood what people have been saying, very keen to play it with the OR, just worried about unpacking it to find out its a stutterfest.

Don't apologise....get it installed. :D

But people are reporting on very high spec machines Judder (more of a SW isue than HW) so you will probably get Judder whatever card you have.

As I understand it, you basically have to add 50% more grunt than you would if you're using 1080p as a rule of thumb. It also needs to run at 75hz for best results. Since you're getting 60fps with 2560x1440, it sounds to me like you have more than enough power there.

The remaining issues will be configuration, and software related. Both of which can & will be improved.

Tears over DK2 + Elite, a total surprise

Hi guys, I posted this in the media thread but it's DK2 related so I thought it should be here too..

This ones good, a video of twitch streamer Zimtok5 trying ED on the Rift DK2 for the first time, he gets so emotional he tears up around the 17 minute mark, great to watch. :)

Note:- I've added this to this 'In the media' thread because he originally posted about it on reddit, here:

Tears over DK2 + Elite, a total surprise

:D

I preordered a DK2 after watching it, so I suppose I'll be reading this thread more often now. :)

Well, call me a masochist, but I have decided that for the full DK2 experience I needed to start from the beginning so I cleared my save (Viper and 500K cr!) and went back to the Sidey!

Great decision, I love the differences in the cockpit and the roof is so low I can stand up and have my head out of the sunroof!

Amassed just over 20k cr this afternoon farming the Federal distress beacon and saw a familiar face/Name (BobbyDylan) Amazing to think we were both there killing Feds in DK2. (I am Andark in game BTW BD)

Turned of AA and hit constant 75fps everywhere including in stations so I am happy. DK2 in ED just keeps getting better and better well done oculus and well done FD for supporting the tech and making my dreams come true. Never thought I would experience this in my lifetime (and it is only beta and a dev kit!)

Oh and Raindor man/woman up and install the damn thing. you'll thank us later ;)

Also saw below on reddit. It's a bit of a guesstimate .... but gives us still on the list hope :D

"If anyone wants an educated guess on the shipping/arrival time of the units, based on the fact that the 3rd batch was 7k. If all future batches are 7k weekly, then this should be accurate Quote from Oceanos on cybereality's topic:

If it does turn out to be 7k a week, they will be able to finish all orders by the 13th of September week (all 50k current). That would be pretty good and would coincide with their prediction that they will be able to ship the rest out of new orders still in September.

Here are the new numbers if people want to be optimistic for the 7k a week possibility (Based on the fact that the 3rd batch is 7k Units):

TOTAL SHIPPED // COVERS UNITS ORDERED PRIOR TO // SHOULD SHIP BY

• 16,000 // Mar 22nd // Aug 9th

• 23,000 // Mar 27th/28 // Aug 16th

• 30,000 // April 18th // Aug 23rd

• 37,000 // May 19/20 // Aug 30th

• 44,000 // June 26/27th // Sep 6th

• 51,000 // June 30th-And beyond // Sep 13th

• 58,000 // ???? // Sep 20th (if pre-orders even go that high by that date, if not then everyone who has ordered a DK2 should be having theirs shipped by then) "

--- Remember though this is an educated guess based on the google docs order info, no one knows for sure what will end up happening."

ok I did as you asked guys, installed...
Issue, does anyone know what the desktop settings should be or something as when I go into game (ED) and set to secondary display I get the left half of the screen in my right eye and the right side of the screen in my left eye. :-S

Worked fine in the Utility room and yes i updated Firmware.
