ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Well, I've had a wee play with both DK1 and DK2 this afternoon at Fantasticon.

First impressions, very positive and I don't feel like I've wasted my money in ordering DK2 (likely September for me).

There is some chromatic abhorration, and I find I have to lean in to read text, but I think that is to be expected given that the equipment wasn't set up for my eyes specifically. Consequently, I found I got a lot of eye strain (not nausea, just sore eyes). All of these things I think are fixable on my own Rift with a bit of tweaking.

Oh... and, one final thing. WOW!!!

The future is here now guys. :D

(Well, in about a month... ;) )

Pretty much my experiance with it. If we can get the resolution up, and allows for custom lense width (that should reduce eye strain) we should be A-for away.

What's you IPD if I may ask?

Yeah, I think it's just down to the setup. Obviously I wasn't able to mess with it today.

Definitely, having it set up for you specifically makes a world of difference. The only thing I've found when wearing the OR for a long time is I get pretty hot wearing it, particularly when coupled with headphones.

It'll probably be more comfortable come winter. :)

Was nice meeting you today... Glad you enjoyed it! Just got back after a LONG day of demoing at Fantasticon... Loads of fun, but time for bed! :p

The Hauler is nice, but more like the Honda Civic of space trucking. Just wait until you move up to a real truck like the Lakon Type-6 with a twenty foot tall cabin.

Had my first go on the DK2 yesterday at Fantasticon. (In fact, my first go at VR of any kind). Overall impression is wow, this really does add to the gameplay and the sense of immersion. I was quite surprised by the sense of space around the cockpit, it seemed like you could swing a cat around in there. I found that I was looking at the radar less and actually using the full FOV of the canopy, just like a real fighter pilot does :) And the extra physical movement required made it feel more interactive, and probably burnt a few calories as well.

Major downside though was the resolution. I know it's going to increase, but for me, it needs to be a couple of magnitudes greater. It's a bit like having to go back to 640x480. Might be a few years yet before we get Retina screen res in the Oculus. :(

Oh, and thanks to the guys who were helping out with the kits and hardware etc ;)

One of the most amazing experiences was recalibrating the rift slightly behind my actual position holding it in my hand, put it back on and then stand up up and turn around.

I 've backed the premium beta in late april I think, but in the few days I have the DK2, I have played it more than in the months before combined. Even though I used triple 24" screens and TrackIR I can't imagine going back.

The resolution is a bit lacking, but since it's a technical limitation and not some hipsters game design decision to deliberately make the game look like 8 bit in order to appear indie and edgy, I can live with that.
I have issues with the positional tracking sometimes turning off for no apparent reason, forcing me to restart the game every now and then (directional tracking remains intact though), but once I've seen it, I knew that there's no turning back.

Now back to flying my Eagle - flying it whilst listening to Highway to the Dangerzone makes me feel like an 11 year old again :).

The best thing is that it will only get beter with every iteration.
And once you try the rift with ed you don't go back.

I showed the rift with ed to my 62 year old uncle yesterday and the required hardware cost is the only thing holding him back from buying it.

Show him ED again with the CV1 and I bet the cost are no big deal anymore. :D

~24h and bye bye Reallife. ^^

I had another go, this time using FRAPS to see what's going on. My machine doesn't seem to be fast enough :( Space! I can get 75FPS in flight if I drop the resolution by one (which is not practical!) and put the graphics on minimum. In station it's still choppy. I bumped it back up to 1920x1080 and high graphics and did a flight just trying not to move my head too much and oh my god this is going to be amazing, especially when the resolution is better and we all have PCs fast enough. This is the first real game I've played that shows the potential of the Rift. For now I'm hoping the twitter post from the other day means I won't need to upgrade... but if I had to - 6 core i7 980x, 8GB RAM, Radeon HC 7800, Windows 8.1, averaging about 54FPS in Rift mode... any idea what I can upgrade that'll be good value £/FPS? It looks like newer cards aren't smashing the 7800 yet but still, anything going to do the trick?

If you go for OR then you need the highest end single-GPUs, e.g. GTX780Ti or R9 290X. Or you can wait for next gen GPUs such as GTX880 rumoured to be released later this year.

After a while playing you hardly notice the low-ish res, the game is just so immersive. Could it do with more res? definitely...is the low-ish res and slight screen door a limiting factor to playing ED now with OR?...100% no.

I think just wait till the build settles a bit.....for the moment just turn off anti-aliasing or lower the detail settings but leave in 1080 mode.

Unfortunately I put everything on minimum and my machine still can't achieve 75FPS. I think I'll wait - in a few months we'll know more about whether they can squeeze more performance out of the engine/Rift mode specifically, and newer cards as mentioned above - thanks all. It really is exciting though isn't it, an example of a game where the rift is really going to work, and it happens to be Elite!

FWIW at the cannisters mission (busy scene), with the rift switched off (so side by side, no warp) an no vwait I get:
Low graphics: 75-80 FPS
High graphics: 51-54 FPS

Single 1080p screen (3d/vr mode off):
Low graphics: 100-110 FPS
High graphics: 63-68 FPS

So it seems like I might be able to hope that 75FPS is possible in low graphics mode if they can make the warp super efficient!
