ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I'll say it again (for what good that'll do) we need a VR sub-forum thingy. I can't imagine new people trying to find stuff in this monstrous thread.

Anyone asked Mr. Brooks if we could make that happen?

Mine arrived today. Positional tracking an interesting addition, being able to look around the ship/down the side of the seat! But otherwise can't really detect any difference over DK1, certainly not from a resolution perspective. Text still unreadable. As has been said, if you were hoping DK2 would give you a high-end, high-res playable experience, you will be disappointed - but I think that's well understood by now ;)

That's odd, the difference was like night and day to me. I sold my dk1 shortly after i got it because the resolution and optics weren't good enough for me to develop or play on, hell i could barely even see out of the damn thing. I've had to physically mod and hack the ovrservice to get my dk2 to be in focus because of my narrow ipd but now everything looks stunning. I have no problem reading the text in Elite, i occasionally have to lean in a bit on the commodities screen but that's about it.

Anyhow I'm glad you finally got yours. I'm sure that once you fiddle around with it you'll be a lot happier with the results.

Agreed. Something very wrong here. Check in ED Options page to make sure res is 1080p and the OR detail slider is all the way to the right. Also turn off UI effects in options

text is easily readable in the main, even without leaning in

its like what i experience, i have a dk1 so i know what to expect but what i see in my dk2 just seams wrong. in my case i see an instant drop in gfx when i activate the "experimenta 3d" stuff. all text just goes in the toilett. i can clearly read menues better when i dont activate it but then my left and my right eye are switched.

also i did read about a "oculus" slider for gfx details - i dont have that in my options?!?

It's near the last (bottom) option in the graphics options menu I believe.

Quick question. Two friends of mine are keen for a go of the DK2 but both wear glasses. I've heard they can scratch the DK2 lenses. Should I ban them? (Contacts or nothing boys), is that just a myth.
I wear glasses in my Rift every time I use it. Though there appears to be a small amount of wear on the lenses it hasn't made a visible difference whatsoever.

If someone does wear glasses make sure to set them up with the eye relief at least halfway out or more so their face isn't smashed against the lenses. It removes the black bars that are the edges of the screen from your FOV any way and makes the experience more immersive.

Have you set your IPD and not played with the sliders after.

Also, with glasses they would be using the B lenses. So they might cause a bit of wear on those but the A lenses can be safely back in the box. If they wear contacts then the A lenses will be in the Rift so actually at more risk.

So I've had a fiddle but can't improve things :(

I'm on the 1080x9-whatever resolution, couldn't get "Direct to HMD" working. Tried oversampling in the ATI CCC; screws up the whole display, so stayed off that :)

Have the slider fully set to the right in ED, effects off.

I can't set my IPD because in the configuration tool, the mouse cursor won't move more than half way across the screen, so I can't click on the "next" button to actually progress through the setup :) tried tab, cursors, everything - just can't seem to get that to work.

Ho hum!

can you guys start and play the game without the experimental 3d stuff aktivated ? anyone else here with the left/right eye problem here ?

I think you need to get your rift as second monitor setup correctly before worrying about Elite Dangerous settings. With the Rift set as second monitor you should be able to see your desktop through the DK2 with no games or demos running.

Some people have to rotate the screen as they report it starting off in portrait orientation instead of landscape.

So get the DK2 orientation and resolution correct with nothing running then try Elite again without the experimental 3d setting or whatever that setting is.

I've ordered 2 970s, the Strix ones from Asus - My DK2 arrives imminently.

What I want to know, is there a guide to setting up this with dk2, the SLI etc?
Does the 970s in sli make any difference to the rift from a single (my current) 780 card?

I'm scared that when it turns up I'm going to have hours of fumbling around with wrong settings or something. A decent explanation of what the difference is and indeed a guide for quick set up would be awesome :)

i have my rift as secondary monitor and i can see my desktop in it ... but as said i have the problem with the left and right eye switched, so i see the left half of my desktop in the right eyecup and vise versa.

Are the images upside down by any chance?
Did you use Windows Display / NVidia control panel to rotate the OR screen? If so, I think you've rotated it the wrong way..

For me the DK2 screen is "Landscape (flipped)" in the Windows screen resolution config ... if you've got "Landscape" try "Landscape (flipped)" and nice versa and see if that fixes it...

no the image orientation is fine button is down and top is up. when i close my right eye i see the right half of my desktop in the left eyecup and vise versa.

what should look like this:

looks like that:

and thats the same in e:d. direct to hmd stuff, config tool, tuscan demo etc. are fine.
