ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Ok, cheers for the tip.

The missus is out tonight at a work thing so I should have a few hours of peace and quiet to give this a bash.

This is definitely something to work on. I noticed the same. For me, at the perfect height, the rift is not even resting on my nose.

The other thing, which I suspect us DK1 Vets do subconsciously, is you need to develop the habit of moving your head to look at stuff rather than your eyes. The centre of the screen is always where it looks best.

It is worth the effort though. I have had so many OMG moments this weekend, especially approaching planets in the Type 6. The scale is truly insane.

Mine arrived an hour ago. Managed to get E: D working ok. Bit of judder now and again that I believe is when the frame rate is dropping below the refresh rate as it mainly happens in stations. Hopefully some tweaking will get it just right

Really glad it has finally arrived! I felt for you on Friday

Yea, totally.

At one point during the weekend I had the camera set up perfectly right. I glanced down though the air mesh on the side of the goggles. My arm was perfectly aligned with the in-game character model. I could see my own white arm, with yellow t-shirt seemingly morph into the black-clad space arm in the game, perfectly lined up.
What a mind-frak that was.

Heh, I have the air mesh taped shut, the light leak bothered me.

When I get my x55 I'm thinking of doing THIS

Cheers dude :)

I still can't work out what is going on inside stations in regards to performance.

With my DK1 the performance inside stations seems to change with every iteration of Elite. In PB1 performance was pretty low, around 40fps in PB2 that went to over 60fps.

In Beta 1, I sometimes get 60fps and other times around 45fps - this is within the same station and using the same graphic settings. I'm starting to wonder if it's network related?

Might try it in single player to see if it's that.

Yep, Glad to hear you've got your DK2.

I let a mate have a go on it at the weekend.....

To say he was impressed........:D

So far I love E: D with the rift, I can sit for hours. Still have framdrops inside hangars and stations but that's only because of my GTX670 not being powerful enough. I'm playing with a xbox360 controller and Logitech G27 pedals for yaw. Works pretty good, but I can't wait to get a x55 rhino!

The only thing i don't like with the rift implementation is that when you throttle up your head position moves backwards to simulate that you're driving fast, a nice effect in the vanilla game but not so much in the rift :) Hoping that will be fixed in the next update.

Even with the juddery head tracking its still enjoyable, so can't wait to see after the updates!
Wow that Rhino looks a beast! I've got most the stuff mapped on my 14 button stick, wouldn't know what to do with the 40 odd buttons =P

I dunno, I kinda like that effect with the rift, did give a sense of speed, although, wouldn't want it all the time

Really hoping there'll be a lot more graphics optimisations down the line :) I really miss having FXAA, but I have to disable it even in the graphics card settings in order to get smooth framerates in stations.

I've also noticed that it depends really seriously on the ship cockpit that you're using

With all settings on low (I have SLI GTX 770s, but running just the one card at the moment) I had smooth framerates in most stations with a Sidewinder, but it became a little more jerky in some places with a Hauler. Then I upgraded to a Cobra and... it got unplayable. Even out in empty space I'd still get judder =/

Now I've upgraded to a Lakon Type 6 and it's smoother now, though stations are still much more juddery than they were in a Sidewiner.

*sigh*

It's a damn addictive toy when you get it right for you.

My only problem with the DK2 so far is the red mark it leaves on your face. The Dk1 didn't do this as much.

It's annoying when I sneak in a few trade runs at lunch only to go back to work like I've been scuba diving/skiing at lunch because of the red goggle mark :D

Yeah, it looks like you've been sunburned while wearing sunglasses doesn't it? :)

Ive noticed recently that it sits quite well by itself on my face compared to the DK1, so I could loosen the straps to maximum length and it was ok.

The effect is nice, but when you look down you are looking inside your chest and you can see the seat. If they can make the "dolly zoom effect" without moving the position of the head that would be nice.

Are you running on low?, I get a smooth 75fps in space but 55-60 in stations.

I would but I get too hot even with them there.

AS for the seat mod, Lol, I got the same thing. Arm rest, Vesa mounts, velcro strips.... Excpet for the X55 (I got a Logitech 3d pro and a a Nostromo) it's the same.

Ah get your point if your looking down, does look odd!
Also, anyone else notice the flask in the cockpit =]

Yeh at the time I was, however bumped back up to max without the rift, will have another play tonight,

Well my OR arrived today, but other than opening the box to have a quick look I have yet to unwrap it.

Alas events have meant I have been unable to afford the GFX card I need to run this thing, after purchasing it on the spur of the moment amongst the hype I kinda missed the bit where you need a 780ti or greater to run it properly. My mistake of course, but the family totally unreasonably want a holiday instead rather than me spending 400pounds or more on a gfx card...

So I am stuck with a boxed DK2 for the moment :-(

Very glad I read your post, Riandor, I was about to order one but will have to wait until I have the card to match!

That or game/OR code shifts so that it becomes playable at a high enough frame rate with lesser cards.

I myself have a GeForce 670gtx 4gb, but everyone on here says even OC'd it only runs the game on minimum.

I had hoped to afford a GPU upgrade this year, but the DK2 itself is expensive and affording the headset AND a GPU capable is a serious investment if you are not already at that level.

I havent remembered all the posts on the subject, but it is possible that someone will pipe up and remind me that a good GeForce 780 (non Ti) is good enough, but still...

I'm sure there must be some optimisations and graphical tweaking down the line, especially stuff specifically for the Rift :) There's really nothing in here that screams for a 780 to be mandatory equipment... we're way in beta and framerates are far from final. Wait a bit and see what it's like closer to release!

Which is to say nothing of potential driver-side optimisations from nVidia, which they'll be likely to release once the game's live at some point, and SLI support and the like.

Why not try it and see?
For me the only problem areas are stations and ring systems, everywhere else is AOK.
Even then if you keep your head still it's not juddery.
Stations and ring systems have always been a bit of a framerate hog. FD improved stations in one of the PB releases but the new graphical whizz bang has reduced performance again.
I'm sure FD are on the case as well as OVR for improvements at their side.

I did a bit of performance monitoring and my CPU cores never went over 87% usage and my GPU maxed out at 96% usage. FPS monitoring shows dips as low as 40fps which I assume when in a station. Most of the time it's 75fps with odd dips to 60/50 fps.

Sell the family, buy GFX card.

Problem solved. :D

What card do you have? I'm runing a ATI 7870 and it's coping ok(ish) Hoping the judder will be fixed by a SDK update etc.
