ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Don't know how ppl are storing their OR, but it's bit of a pain to unplug it from the back of the PC every time, and the cardboard box is a bit big for just the headset.
So I found the headset sits nicely in a 3l "Really Useful Box" (readily available from Staples etc) with a lid to keep it dust free.. thinking of cutting a small slot in the side for the cable so I can properly close the lid etc but at the moment just sitting the lid on top is enough to keep it tidy and protected from casual knocks & dust etc when not in use...

A few pages back there was a discussion on SLI. Not sure if it's been mentioned before but FD have confirmed 'The good news is that SLI support is coming in Beta 2 .......' in this weeks newsletter (#39)

All you guys with a rift DK2 - what happens when the full retail version comes out?
Do you automatically get the final retail version as a free swap?

The DK2, like the DK1, is purchased as-is with no expectation of any upgrades. Everyone who has one will most likely be picking up a CV1 at retail when it launches.

No.. DK2 is a dev platform so we can develop stuff for CV1 when it comes out... we *might* get some kind of pre-order facility for CV1, but no discount etc.

It's not like a beta offer on software (eg ED, test this and when it's ready you'll get the full version), it's more like "buy the first model of this new car" knowing there may be more models released later based on the feedback on the first model

Anyone have the issue with leaning forward makes things move away and leaning back draws them forward? Does it across the board, no matter what I'm viewing.

Any fixes?

Just a guess but if you are too close to the camera then when you lean forward you can move out of the area it can see. So it doesn't know where you are and puts you at a default distance. Then you lean back and it picks you up and puts you at the correct distance that might be less than the default. Probably not that but if it sounds like it might be then try putting the camera further back and making sure you would always be in a cone pointing out from it.

To me, what Sanderson is experiencing rather sounds like the camera not operating at all and falling back to pure directional tracking.

If the camera is not operational, it will regard your head as the center of the scene and move the entire scenery forward when leaning forward and backward respectively - just like the DK1 did.

At least that's my hypothesis - seems plausible as he gets it accross all demos and matches the description to some extent.

@Sanderson - does the blue light come on? Do you get it in the config tools demo scene? What does the demo scene show if you enable camera boundaries?

Still waiting for my DK2 (next couple of weeks I hope) but I would expect & hope to get CV1 when it's released. They're aiming it at a fairly low price point I think. It depends how good it is though. E: D really needs 4k in VR, but how likely that is for CV1 is unclear. Might end up waiting for CV2.

Mmm now that you mention it, my camera tracker doesn't light up while playing ED, only when I run the demo in the config utility. I always though that if you stop the oculus service the camera tracker won't work anymore.

The trick is to sell DK2 well before CV1 and then you don't loose too much. I actually sold my DK1 with a little profit after I decided there is not enough content to keep using it.
I don't hope for the same with DK2, but if I loose some I will, DK2 is not hugely expensive, so I decided I can afford it, I will definetely try to sell it on ebay ahead of CV1 to get some money back :)

Cmon Tifosi, stop holding the cue! :)

When the new one comes out, you just go buy that one. Like cars, I get a new one every year when the new models come out, who want to be driving last years model?! :)

Mine arrived. Had a good 90mins of playing so far, no nausea whatsoever and unlike the DK1 the game's fully playable as you can read all the text easily (even if you have to lean in to some occasionally).

It normally works (for me however, somewhat unreliable only in ED) - one thing I do to test visitors using it is to ask them to stand up and read what's written on the side of the vipers headrest.

If they can, they have positional tracking.

Not me I will wait till CV2.........Unless CV1 is a very real game changer.

Thanks guys. I guess will hang fire then unless money becomes less tight.

So what does CV stand for, consumer version?
And what is the 4k?
I read that it is max res of 1080 current DK but that the retail version will have higher res and probably be wireless, is that correct?

Do you automatically get the final retail version as a free swap?

Nope. No rebates, no swaps. No different than upgrading a video card, or TC, or CPU or...

You get the point!

So good grief Elite is amazing with the Rift! I'm pretty much speechless.

My gpu struggles a little though. I know there is optimising to do yet etc. But I could take advantage of inflated eBay rates sooner rather than later and helps fund a new 780 or something.. At least then prepared for the consumer version!

Oups, forgot to update since my DK2 got delivered and I had to leave for a three-day-trip to france only a few hours after I got it all set up. ^^
