Why not fix the CA in the DK2 ?

Hi guys,

This is NOT a complaint, merely a question. I downloaded the Reddit CA fix for the 1.04 .exe a while ago and, wow, what a difference it made in the quality of the DK2 image. CA was almost gone, text was much more readable. In fact, everything was much, much clearer. When I tried to apply it to the 1.05 and 1.06 patch, the game wouldn't let me play online, which is why I had to roll it back. Back to jarring, immersion-breaking CA...

Now, I'm curious as to why such a simple solution hasn't been applied yet to the .exe. It's a just a few numbers that need edit and don't affect the rest of the game at all. Do you plan to include this soon, in the next version of DK2 upgrade code ?

So if I were you, I'd buy an EVGA 770, test it out and if it doesn't cut the mustard, step it up to a 780 or 780 Ti (or a 970/980 card depending on how far down the road your upgrade is).

I am currently running on a single 770. It's not enough, although oddly enough, it runs smoother than on a 1080p monitor without a DK2. At least to my eyes.

I have another identical card that hopefully will get used on 2.0.

I've merged it into the DK2 thread

If you have a bug the ticketing system is the way to go. The Development Team reads the tickets, they don't necessarily read the forums.

Thanks for this, useful to see.

I'm planning on buying a new PC when my rift arrives since i've only got a GTX465. Its actually not a bad gpu for over 4 years old, but in that second station you dock at I only get 25 fps and that's without the rift! Elsewhere other stations are 40 and space is 60+

Its a bit of a shame as from what i've read my intel 920 cpu is still pretty good (only 2 gens behind), but I think at this point just upgrading my gpu would probably be a waste of money, especially if I need additional components like a new PSU. Regardless i'm still going to wait until the new gpu's come out and see what the breakdowns are.

I think worse case i'll get a GTX770 and hope that Frontier still has some substantial optimisations to make on station interiors. Even if they just replaced every other section in the station with a simple flat mesh would probably help.

My CPU is a i5 4430, so i think that the GPU upgrade won't be a waste of money! Instead of wasting money on CPU and GPU co directly for a HIGH END GPU and to avoid conflicts, just take a single card, not x2 or SLI or CF. In the future if you will think about editing, then take also a CPU. all IMHO:D

Yeah, I'm running a 780 and it *just* handles it at 1.5x supersampling (which is vital on the Rift), that's why I was suggesting that he buy a card with an upgrade path.

And only 1080p. I can see CV1 of the rift having a lot of those features but with a higher res screen. Good to see competition though, it means we will get better products eventually.

It currently matches the DK2 pretty well but, I'm most hopeful for the onboard thingy that accepts any HDMI input and doesn't require as much gpu muscle. If it really works as insinuated.

Having the manual focusing is a big Plus.
Also the 90° is a clever way to clean off the window effect of a LCD/OLED panel as much as possible. The fact that only samsung is giving reliable panels on the market and they are working with Oculus, how did they manage to havein the Totem a panel with one more Sub pixel????:S:S:D:D
90° is enough also in real life"what we see and use" is less than 90°, because to have more ° your eye should be more inside the lens, that means having contact lenses ;)

The built in Curved modified view for aligning the view in the lenses is something that everyone will do.

For now VR is playing tennis, every hit of the ball is one more upgrade with new players, just hitting the ball and keeping it up, but no one started the game, they are just beating the ball and this will continue also after the Consumer Version:D

Good for us, but not for the wallet.:D

Disagree with this. The DK2 has a slightly smaller FOV than the DK1 and I do notice it - things just feel a little more claustrophobic. Despite the DK2 being better in every other way (by a long way) this is a noticeable and backwards step. Obviously it's still all "developer kit" territory so I'm not overly concerned but I do hope that CV1 reinstates the wider FOV or, even better, surpasses DK1.

Exactly... it looks good on that basis alone. Regardless, I highly doubt the DK2 will be the last VR headset I will ever buy, so the more competition & takes on the underlying technology the better IMO. I won't be pledging, as I've been stung before by hardware Kickstarters (Kreyos) from indies, but I'll watch with interest. :)

You can edit it yourself for the 1.06 exe , the instructions are at:
http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/2dysny/elitedangerous_chromatic_aberration_improvement/
I used hexplorer to do this http://sourceforge.net/projects/hexplorer/
As someone who had never tied this sort of thing before I found it straightforward and it took all of two minutes. Just make sure to save a copy of the exe before you edit it in case of mistakes

Thanks ! Will try this as soon as I get home. Still wondering why FD hasn't already done this. Seems like a no-brainer...
