ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Much appreciated - bookmarked. Any tips on optimising the experience would be gratefully received too - I have a GTX770 so am borderline for a good DK2 experience. I currently run ED in a full window on a 1080p monitor, with a second 1280x1024 display as an extended desktop.

Running the DK1 roughly cuts my fps in half from what I get on my monitor at 2560x1080. This is with a GTX 780.

Actually so long as you set the 3D setting in the graphics options to 'Oculus Rift (headphones)' then you will have a pretty good idea of what it'll run like on the Rift!

Cmdr awesome, my tips to you would be:

- get some kind of frame counter working (I use rivatuner, but geforce experience has on in built these days)
- run eilte
- video options: set 3d to Oculus rift headphones
- video options: set vsync to off
- start the first tutorial (docking)
- before take off, use freelook to see how well your framerate copes - you want it to be above 75 at all times, really.
- once you're happy while stationary, fly out and fly back and keep an eye on the frame counter.

Things to adjust for better frames:
(just use the presets to begin with, once you find one which gives 75+ most of the time you can then adjust the below)
- anti aliasing : off (makes basically no difference on the Rift anyway)
- shadows (these are expensive computationally so should be first to be knocked down
- effects quality
- ambient occlusion
- environment detail

Environment details help significantly, and on the Rift you're hard pushed to spot the difference.

Good luck!

Any reason why you specify running with headset? I did read somewhere that there was a frame rate hit in B2 but I thought it was for using the headphones option rather than speakers?

Slightly OT but apparently people have managed to hack DK2 support into Alien Isolation. Anyone brave enough to try it and report back once they have changed their underwear? ;)

Has anyone used an extension on there rift to increase the length of cable?
I have door and tower to left of where I play and thought about running cable from behind head around the room to the tower to avoid any chance of cable pulls. Need cable to be approx 5-6 metres long.
Any thoughts?

i have a strange problem with my rift. the setup worked fine, table demo in direct mode all nice. tuscan demo & radial g demo work fine.

but i cant start E:D in direct mode, the rift just stays black..

when i try to start E:D with the rift in extended desktop mode i can select the rift (secondary screen) with right resolution/refresh rate but the left and right eye are switched (my windows desktop is allready worng in the googles). when i enable "experimental 3d rift" ingame it will fix it but the gfx are not very nice. all the menues etc. are nearly unreadable etc. the gfx with switched eyes look much better (of course its not playable this way...).

anybody has a tip what to do?

I think OVR official stance on the matter is do not use extensions.
I'd just try it and see what happens.

You'll need a HDMI extension and a USB extension.
You can get a spit roast HDMI adapter that you can use with a normal HDMI cable that might be cheaper than a proper extension cable
like this - LINK

USB extenders are a dime a dozen, I picked up a handful for couple of quid in B&M Bargains :)

The oculus cable has a chip in it, but it looks like it can still be done. See the discussion here: https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=12807&p=203440&hilit=cable+extension#p203440

I tried it at lunchtime, it works amazingly well. Super smooth for me, no judder, on max settings. Has full 6DOF tracking, no graphical glitches, no crashes.

TBH I have no idea why they didnt release it with official VR support enabled as it works perfectly.

BTW, if playing with a 360 controller, you can hold both L+R Bumper buttons at the same time to re-center the DK2 positional tracking camera.

Also, for anyone looking to get the game cheap, I got my copy earlier from here for £20 GBP:

http://www.cjs-cdkeys.com/products/Alien:-Isolation-CD-Key-For-Steam.html

They are a Steam key reseller, they just give you a Steam key, which you then activate and download using Steam. I have used them a few times before and never had any problems.

Only issue I would have with Alien Isolation on the Rift, is that apparently head movement and aiming are linked.

I really feel that in FPS games the head needs to move independent from aiming. Pretty much makes it unplayable for me otherwise...really damn weird...

So....how terrifying is it, you obviously survived the experience! I have a theory that they removed it because they were worried about killing people with weak hearts!

OK... No DK3 as such, but still possible to get hold of the crescent. That was my question...

I initially got the rift to develop on, but now find most of my time with it taken up with Elite :)

http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/20/oculus-rift-crescent-bay-vr-headset-hands-on/

In the article (dated September) the author says 'started making its way into the hands of developers'. I know several developers got hands on at the Oculus Connect demo but personally I have not read of any being sent out to developers. My impression was Crescent Bay is an internal prototype not for release (per jabokai's link). Likewise don't remember reading anyone on this thread being lucky enough to have tried it. I would be interested if others have heard different :)

damn you damn you damn you ;)

I see on the site it still says get the expendible DLC at no extra cost... however if you select the nostromo edition it puts the price up.

Do you know if this is just out of date info, or are the still sending out the pre-order bonuses for free?

thanks

These simple steps work for me.

- Use Extended mode (not direct)
- Choose "Pause service" Oculus config utility *before* starting ED

For tweaking I suggest searching forums and Reddit for DK2 tips and hints. Things like running all monitors on 75hz, what to enable, disable, etc.

no change. still left & right eye are switched until i activate experimental 3d mode which just makes all huds and written stuff hardly readable.

is it impossible to run the game in direkt mode? or are you able to run the game in monitor extended mode without activating the experimental 3d mode?

Mine arrived today. Positional tracking an interesting addition, being able to look around the ship/down the side of the seat! But otherwise can't really detect any difference over DK1, certainly not from a resolution perspective. Text still unreadable. As has been said, if you were hoping DK2 would give you a high-end, high-res playable experience, you will be disappointed - but I think that's well understood by now ;)

Hi mate, I'm surprised you can't detect any resolution difference to the DK1 and the text is still unreadable. I don't question what you are seeing, but it's inconsistent with what others have reported. It reminds me of when someone had two goes on a DK2 show demo, he said the first was poor and the second was great - just an idea but perhaps needs fine tuning?

My expectations are quite low for DK2 resolution and sounds like we will need CV1 asap :D

Agreed. Something very wrong here. Check in ED Options page to make sure res is 1080p and the OR detail slider is all the way to the right. Also turn off UI effects in options

text is easily readable in the main, even without leaning in
