ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Now as soon as play open or solo the fps starts to drop in the space stations and the asteroid fields to around 55fps??? Whats that all about, has any body experienced the same?

Yep. Tutorial Missions are Offline (you can disconnect from the Internet and they fully work). I have experienced the same as you - I have tried getting some attention to this on the forums, but so far there seems to be very little interest in this issue. Here is what I posted before:

Important Note: There have been no changes on my system between Beta 1.06 and Beta 2.04.

Tests

Beta 1.06

Outside Station: 72-82fps +
Inside Station: 60-62fps
On Pad: 62-66fps

Beta 2.04

Outside Station: 57-62fps
Inside Station: 44-52fps
On Pad: 45-46fps

As I mentioned the changes in graphics might be expected to have a performance hit...but I told myself that it shouldn't be such a dramatic change!!

So - I tested OFFLINE Play. The tutorial missions are Offline. You can test this for yourself; load up Tutorial Mission One - and then disconnect from the Internet. The Mission will work perfectly...you will even be able to get docking requests accepted (something usually handled by the server). Added to this, you will be able to load up and play any of the other Tutorial Missions without connecting to the Internet again.

Therefore I decided to do a test on...

Tutorial One - Docking:

Outside Station: 88-94fps
Inside Station: 60-64fps
On Pad: 60-64fps

Tutorials have higher fps due to being offline. Turn off aa as it makes no difference when wearing rift. Turn down shadows then if you need to. Truth is vr is hard on most cards.

Question is, why is there such a huge FPS difference between Offline Play and Online Play.

Additionally, there is a huge difference in fps between Beta 1.06 and the current beta, as you can see above.

So, I am green now too.

I have to say: awesome!

A few observations though, the 'presence' everyone talks about is really there so much so that I am feeling a little ill now (too many loops and twists in space...!) but the screendoor effect and low pixel resolution is really worse than I would have imagined.

I have an HMZ-T1 from Sony that has two 720p oled displays, it's FOV is far smaller of course but you don't see the screen door effect even close as bad as with the DK2.

But the added headtracking and less weight make the DK2 far superior.

I am not sure 1440p is really enough for a consumer version though, you can't see any fine details with 1080p unless you get your ships nose right into it, a jump to 1440p isn't going to completely eliminate that.

I tried Alien Isolation for about five minutes, it was great but so scary that I just couldn't go on!

Something interesting there, the cutscenes look extremely sharp and well defined and make the screendoor effect far less noticeable than during normal gameplay, though I have no idea why.

I think I should really try supersampling like some here said, it might get the image quality close to the cutscenes.

Oh also, I am playing on a gtx680, with everything on high except shadows medium and AO / AA off, it runs smooth as butter in space, close to planets and in stations I see the judder though, but instead of lowering the graphics settings, simply not moving your head around while in stations works prety well too. :p

p.s.

cloth already slightly scratched the lenses and does anyone else always get dust or other stuff between the lenses and the screen? I remove the lenses, clean both screen and lenses and put it back together... then I notice another pice of dust or similar, remove the lenses again and clean everything and put it back together, then I notice another... *and so on*

I don't think so, because E: D is a 3D game - and the Rift support is also 3D. The reason VorpX offers that option is because it is forcing the 3D separation on games that weren't designed for the Oculus as a post-processing mode, and that requires processing grunt that you might want to reclaim for frame rates instead.

E: D is 3D all the way. :)

Thanks you for the answer! Well, then I'll experiment with Vorpx in combination with opentrack! Maybe this will work... till we can use the direct mode... (Beta 3 hopefully)!

I'm disabled and have been prescribed mary jane by my doctors so, I'm not pushing illegal things, I was just wondering if anyone else has combined the DK2 and the above medicine?

I can tell you from personal experience, it's a whole new world. Immersion would be an understatement.

I've heard from friends who've tried it that it actually reduces nausea.

Yeah, It's pretty awesome hahaha

I just tried it: It worked and there wasn't any judder.. I maxed everything out and set the resolution to 2560x1440... the space-station never looked so good... but the Headtracking isn't as good as the native one, like I expected... so I'm switching back to the original settings... it's the better way! Btw: Didn't know that 2.05 is out... looks like there are some frames more... it's getting better and better!

well. sad to say, but I tried all advice ..and still the same blurry-ness....

no stutter , all smooth but very blurry.
I tried update firm ware

http://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-update-oculus-rift-dk2-firmware/

the nividea setting
and in rift settings.. still the same..
I tried landing . but was so blurry I couldn't judge my height ?

any advice on a direction to try .. most welcome.

if you see a sidewinder hanging around out side a station.. that will be me fiddling with settings.. come over and hoover in front . so I can use you as a
guide for close up visuals...... :)

I got a mic too so have a chat.........

Cmdr Christina Jade....:S

Hi Christina,

I was just wandering how you were getting on with the above problem? I can see others have asked good questions in the hope of narrowing it down.

This could be a red herring but thought worth mentioning just in case. Got my DK2 today and all the demo's were working great. I then went into ED / options / graphics and made the changes (secondary monitor / Oculus mode etc). But everything (ED only) was very blurry.

When using my monitor in ED / options / graphics to make the DK2 changes my screen resolution defaulted to 1280*1024. I had tried to increase it but didn't have many options. However now the DK2 was working I checked again and it let me crank it up to 1920*1080 (I believe native for the DK2). This made everything much clearer for me. If you've already tried this then feel free to ignore ;)

Just got to try Beta 2.05 with an OC MSI GTX 970, maxing out DSR to 4K while turning down OR quality to 1/3 in the options. Not absolutely smooth but... HOLY F**K !!!

You guys who haven't received them yet are in for a massive treat... More like an orgy, really.

That really isn't the best way to get good quality, essentially what you are doing is supersampling with DSR then decreases the framebuffer resolution with ocukis quality slider then displaying that down-ressed supersampled picture on a 1080p screen. Just saying

B2.05 Does anyone else get lots of stutter on game entry even in an outpost docking bay?

It seems to me, that a lot of the island processing is now being done after entry, so users don't have to sit and watch the SSOD.

After a couple of seconds its fine.

Never had stutter before!

For me I click either open or solo play, see the spinning ship page for about 2 seconds and straight into my ship.
Today for the first time I saw a tiny bit of stutter on the spinning ship page as if it missed a couple of frames making the spin jerky, but it still went in as quick and once ingame it was as smooth as usual.

Yes there are lots of stuttering problems occurring.

Yes, I've been having that for a while, even in Solo play and even before the 2.05 update, I'd lay money that you're correct and it's doing a bunch of crap after you load in, but since you're invariably in an outfitting bay, it's not a major problem.

Might be an issue if you load into space and find yourself in a firefight immediately, but that will hopefully be a fairly rare occurrence.

Still Pending my DK2 :( but it was mid september i ordered mine, just hope i manage to fall into this batch and join all you lucky ones on the DK2 soon :)

on a brighter note i gone and ordered the x52 pro, so at least i know when that will be at my door next week.

I wish oculus send out a little more informative but hey, cant moan, best come to he who waits :D
