ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Just out of interest how long for delivery and did you have to pay any import taxes etc.
If you look back a page you'll see the list which shows when people ordered and when they received it..

As for import tax, there isn't any, you will pay VAT at point of order (assuming you're in the uk) and the Rift will be shipped from a UK distribution centre.

Galaxy map is usable if you set up your controller mappings properly.

System map is unusable, as it places the camera inside the star and doesn't let you move. :(

^ This.

The galaxy map is fine on the Rift depending on your bindings. Default bindings for the X55 are rubbish. But I plugged in an Xbox 360 controller as well, and it's all good now (I'm sure I could also remap the X55 controls, but I'm getting used to the joypad in preparation for planetary landings and walking around in the ship).

What the Rift does seem to make worse is the "how do I get to system X" problem, i.e. the lack of route planning. The lower res makes it very hard to plan multi jump routes when the dotted lines aren't there to help you and you've not got much resolution which makes reading things harder. The game desperately needs a route planner.

System map is completely broken, but can still be quite awesome depending on where the camera is and what the system is! There are some great sights to be seen, but it's useless as a system map at the moment.

Just had the UPS email for delivery tomorrow.

Me too :D Cant book the day off though :(

I use one called rivatuner. It lets you specify an offset from the corner, ie you can specify to make it 300x300 pixels away from the corner, which then means it's visible on the Rift without removing the lens etc.

You can even set the colour of the overlay, so you can make it orange if you like to keep in-theme with the game's hud ;)

THANK YOU for all the FPS replies - sorted! It took me a while to work out that MSI Afterburner now comes with RivaTuner integrated. This is what worked best for me, I can leave the lenses in and the FPS shows in the top left of the cabin which is very nice :D

Because I only started playing with my DK2 this weekend I was surprised by how many ED Beta 2.x guides still told me to 'pause service'. I forgot to do so last night and it didn't appear to make any difference. Likewise I've left my Windows desktop on Aero & default resolution / 60Mhz refresh rate. I'm guessing the need to change these also went away with the latest SDK, if anyone knows different please let me know :S

Hi All,

I have been enjoying ED with my DK2 for a while now, all smooth and head tracking ok.

However I have lost head tracking!

Since B2 it just won't give me any head tracking at all, the game is a static screen in the DK2.

I have tried re installing the oculus software, running the service and not running it. Tried the rift as monitor 1 and as 2. Other things too, so many that I have run out of ideas.

Anybody got anything i can try?

If you get any judder it's worth addressing those first.

Any chance someone can do a "Set up DK2 to work with ED from scratch" please?

With what I have found I have managed to get it to display, but not with head tracking...

EDIT: Or, I can get head tracking but no display in the rift.

I've had my DK2 for a couple of days now, and am trying to get the best results out of my gtx770/i7-4770. I have 2 regular monitors - a 1080p/60Hz which I normally use for ED - this is now running at 75Hz thanks to some custom config, and a secondary 1280x1024 panel that also runs at 60Hz. The monitors are both using DVI sockets on the PC, to keep the HDMI socket free for the Rift.

I've found that I'm getting about 50FPS in the ED training missions, and varying the quality options aren't making a huge difference. What does make a difference is pulling the plugs on the monitors so my only display is the rift - I can get 70FPS in space if I do this, but launching the game is a PITA as it involves yanking the monitor cables and removing the lenses in order to re-orient the main windows display to "Landscape (Flipped)" and then launch the game.

I've tried using the 'Virtual Desktop' rift app which is lovely, but it breaks when I pull my main display cable.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

My top tip: Simply do CTRL+F and remove the left lens to check your frame rate!

Still not here thanks to my least favourite delivery service UPS!!!!!!!

I was a sad day indeed when UPS' vans arrived on the streets of the UK.

I can get it to display on the rift if I use extended display, but no tracking.

If I use native mode I can select Oculus in the Options->Graphics menu, but it displays on my monitor, not in the rift.

Try turning Vsync off
Alternatively you can lower the resolution of your monitors till you can run them at 75hz. E.g. I run my 1440p monitor at 1280 x 1024 which allows me to run it at 75hz rather than 60hz.
Do this when the DK2 is on and in extended.
When you turn the DK2 off again the monitors should automatically return to 1080p/60HZ and when you turn the DK2 back on again it should drop them to 1280x1024/75Hz again.

If I use native mode I can select Oculus in the Options->Graphics menu, but it displays on my monitor, not in the rift.

Is the firmware of the DK2 at the most recent 2.12?
Have you installed the most recent runtime 0.4.2?
Try plugging the power cable into the little box on the cable.
Make sure the camera USB cable is plugged into a USB 2 port (black) not USB 3 port (blue).
Have you selected Oculus rift speakers or headphone in the options, don't select side by side 3d.

in graphic options you have to set Monitor to "Secondary"
