Modes ED "Beyond" Disappointing, anyone have similar feelings?

Disappointed?

Nope. To be honest, seeing a roadmap for 2018 is a good thing - it means they're planning to continue to work on a game I enjoy for at least another 12 months

Beyond that, lets get real, we've litterally just started 2.4, and are only a few days into Q4 2017.

Thats 3-6 months before we even have to think about the first releases to come into effect on the 2018 roadmap.

I'm going to withold any serious judgement on whats coming up over the next year till we've heard a little more beyond "we're planning to improve the game" - which in itself, from my point of view, doesnt sound like a bad place for them to start.

'Beyond' looks and feels just right. There's no pleasing the current generation (it's a personal assumption, don't sweat it).

Space legs has to come at some point :)

No it doesn't and why is everyone so mental about space legs. Go play SC if you want that - ED is not going to get space legs. FDev have said nothing positive about either space legs or atmospheric planets and if anything, have distanced themselves from it.

Personally, I'd love space legs but realistically, even SC hasn't got it right yet and they started with it (unless I'm mistaken that the game is stil a buggy mess).

So no, it doesn't have to come at some point and is likely never to come at all because not only is it massive work to do all the ship interiors and working out how you can walk around your ship whilst it's moving but you also need gameplay around it - what gameplay can they add that won't take 6 years to make?

The thing Elite Dangerous is lacking for me is surprise. I know what I am going to see every time I enter a USS or drop into an RES or Combat zone. When I land on a planet, there is nothing weird there. Just beige and rocks. The whole point of exploration is to discover the new and unexpected. Something weird. The only thing that surprises me anymore in Elite is getting ganked by a CMDR when I thought I was safe and alone.
I hope the new exploration and planet revamp adds tons of random weird things to discover. I was going to engineer my Conda and do some exploring, but now that I know the whole thing is getting revamped next year, I'm guess just going to wait and go play something else.

This.

There's nothing in ED that isn't something you haven't seen before or know what's going to happen. 400 Billion star systems with nothing in them.

Only thing that bothers me about 'Beyond' is that since pretty much Beta, Frontier have done absolutely nothing for Exploration.... it's not really supported by the game in any shape or form unless you count "Hey let's just throw small amounts of scripted hand placed stuff in the Pleiades every 3 months!" exploration. But that's more casual tourism with elements of ARG research thrown in. But flying circles around the Pleiades for 2 years waiting for the next big update to tell you something new has been added there isn't exactly exploration gameplay.

Now Frontier have finally said they're doing something for actual exploration (And lets hope it's actual exploration tools to feed into exploring deep space, and not just new grind resources to gather from USS within the populated bubble). The downside? They won't be doing anything any of it until the rearend of 2018.... which with Frontiers scheduling could mean anytime between December 2018 and July 2020.

In the meantime before anything at all happens with Exploration to finally make it a supported game activity, various combat systems are getting even more attention and already developed systems are getting further developed, trading and the UI are getting another pass over (Making this the 3rd I think it is?), and Frontier even seem planned to add further parts of their "We still don't know what we'll do for a Karma system, it's all very loose ideas and nothing firm yet" system..... half a year or more before Exploration even gets its first bit of attention having already been stagnant for 4 years since Beta.

(Side note: And I'm willing to bet they'll also find time to squeeze in the 5th reinvention and total design overhaul of the mission board system before anything happens with Exploration.)

Which all very much points to Frontier have quite literally been doing sweet f'all for exploration in all this time. Not even coming up with a design and getting people working on making that happen up until just very recently.... but before that for 3 years or so not a single thing has been done toward exploration.

And that 3 years is assuming they finally got off their backsides to put together a design idea sometime in the last 5 months, and that the Beyond mention of Exploration doesn't just mean they eventually plan to have someone figure out WTH to do and then hopefully get it done before the end of 2018.

Which is rather pathetic, but mostly just very sad to see.

Even if it does, there is no guarantee that it will be any good. I have just asked for a refund myself as some of the design decisions look dreadful.

I keep hovering over the refund. No matter how shiny SC is I will eat my hat if it has VR support like ED does.... And VR is the single most amazing thing in ED imo

Unless SC launches before that time ;)
Wich ofcuz will never happen.

What other games will or won't do really matter less at this point for ED. FD is in unique position to improve this game for better, and if they will do, players will respond.

Whatever CIG does with SC, they still have long way ahead for them.

I genuinely do love this response. The forums are notorious for it's biased fanboyism. So why are there so many people with grievances posting on it? Why is the ratio positive/negative threads so slanted towards negative?

No Sir, what you cannot stomach is dealing with different opinions. And that fact is ironic since you bang on about honest discussion. If it isn't an echo chamber and you have to actually support what you say, your go to method is bailing out and crying: the fanboys are after me because they cannot stand my postings of truths.

Behold the Fanboy Oldgaurd, Righteous in his indignation.

I have often said that ED is SC's success or failure.

Everything is there to play for.

For me, SC's biggest selling point is ship action + realistic feeling 1st person immersion. Couple that to MULTI-CREW, and you're basically giving players a ship sandbox where there are no rules, other than physics getting in the way.

IF at some point, a ship can become a Multi-Crew entity, and become persistent in space so that crew members can log in, go about their business, and log out again.. then I think ED will take a remarkable turn. I will question the need for SC if me and some friends could CREW a Cutter into the void and each have roles to play (or designate). We could explore together, mine together, shoot together.. OR we could all explore a system and do things that interest us separately.. come back together, jump back on our stations and head out to another.

ED is a great sandbox, with everything to play for. For me personally, we have an absolute truck load of sand... more sand than one could ever handle.. but, we need more stuff to do with that sand. 'Beyond' helps fill in some of the content gaps... helps things along. I'm not asking for a startrek update... BUT, at some point in the future, a series of space leg content and ship support crew, with game elements to compliment such a thing will certainly (in my eyes) captivate SC's audience.

Go go FDEV. Capitalize!

No. I'm quite looking forward to the mining revamp. Ever since I got my Orca (my original goal when I started playing last year), my next major goal has been a mining T9, but because the current mining system is lackluster, I'm not really in much of a hurry to get there. If they put half as much care toward the mining UI as they did with the planetary landing UI, it's going to be a delight. I hope that we will be able to fit mining turrets and target the rocks.

Nope, don't have the Op's feelings.

The size of the galaxy is the USP of ED, change that and its not ED. The original Elite, the planets were the same except for the name, but the number of them in the eight galaxies was what boggled my mind back then. ED is a further step to appreciating that immense size of our galaxy.

There are areas I would like to see some serious work on such as the whole way factions, squadrons and powerplay hang together.

They've said for a long while that the current versions of combat, mining, exploration eyc. It's not their vision of such professions, they've always said improvement were coming down the line, I'd like to see where they explicitly said that everything is fine and that I doesn't need any improvements.

Although judging by your arrogance by saying how "Easy" everything you mentioned is I'm surprised how you are not the master game developer over at FD.

Calling the game a tech demo or that it is "Incomplete" is like saying that your car is incomplete because it needs an oil change, that's the natural cycle of game development, they drop X feature, receive feedback and improve it for the future. Yes they took a LONG time to do it, which is a direct consequence of them biting more that they could chew but now that they are finally free of the Horizons season they can now release the content that they wanted from the beginning.
