I'm in my fifties, and smartphone apps are immensely useful to me every day. Work and personal email, camera, immediate googling for needed information, flashlight for things I can't see anymore, weather at my fingertips, driving navigation and commute traffic alerts, Kindle ebooks when on a plane, streaming music over bluetooth in my car, alarm clock, voice activated reminders...

All in one device. If you can play ED, you're more than savvy enough to use a smartphone.

The modern smartphone is Douglas Adams' vision made real: the entire known (by humans) universe on an electronic gadget in your pocket/satchel.

I love mine and am rarely without it. The iPhone version of the app now does work but is extremely limited.

More content, please! (But the main game does take priority ;) )

It won't be released for a while, the development is currently paused awaiting the API release. After that, I think third party developers will be able to make such an expansive amount of apps for any purpose you can think of that an official app may never be released.

I am pretty sure the app and the game are developed by separate teams, so finishing / extending the app shouldn't get in the way of game content development. :)

Is this your guess or an official statement from FD? (I know the statement about the API, but I am not aware of reading anything about that being connected to the release of the Android app)

Official statement. It's in the main post of the API thread: "This same process will also help guide our plans for our own apps and so we’re pausing development of expansion of the Android and Windows Phone versions of our existing Companion App until this process is complete."

iPhone 6 plus. The app works fine for me, but it's completely worthless. All it says is some basic data about your commander and the markets of whatever station you're currently docked at. It also tells you about all the ships and has some nice videos. Calling it a companion app is a stretch, it does nothing to aid you.

Can anybody tell me if there are any Elite Dangerous apps for Android or if any are planned?

Planned..yes, but not until they have sorted out the Apple one. Once that is running as intended they will launch the Android. Watch this space, could be a while.

FD should just publish the API and let android devs have at it. FD have enough on their plate without hiring people to write the apps - there are loads of people who will do that for free.
