ED:Odyssey Update 7 Performance Issue and proofs

For every update since release, performance has dropped with every one.

There may be gameplay/powerplay bugs which were fixed, but FDev has no clue on improving the game's fps.
Engine needs a total do-over. They might very well know how to fix certain bugs at this point I solely blame the messed up engine and every day not redoing it is wasted.

Nothing changed for me. I’m still getting the same crappy performance I was getting before the update lol. I’ve gone back to playing Horizons until they fix this game’s performance, if they ever fix it.
Don't even wait for fps to be doubled or more. That would never happen. All possible optimizations may give only few more framerates, and that's it. To make a real difference they have to create a brand new engine. So adapt yourself to a 20 fps. Still playable if you get used to.

I assumed there was something strange going on as there was a huge variation in the frame rates people were getting. So maybe rather than graphics it's some piece of network code going into a loop or something.

But if there was something strange going on you'd think they'd have found it by now.

Happy for you.

Update 7 was a small improvement for me, but stuttering has increased. Doubt I will use ODY for VR but load up horizons instead as long as we can.

its worth noting that, for ODY to run without me getting too motion sick, I have to run the game at a 1080p res and then upscale - even though I have a 1440p monitor. Native res stil kills the game, and causes crashes.

Avg. FPS at settlemens is still around the 45 mark, but now it can spike to 60ish from time to time. The spiking causes the stutters though so... not really a gain.
Yeah, I definitely noticed a big increase in stuttering in update 7 compared to update 6. It also seemed like there was much more visible LOD pop-in when approaching a planet too compared to 6, but I only went down to one so far in 7.

There's always been at least a small amount of hitching and stuttering for me in Odyssey, but the first time I had a lot of big issues with it was in Update 4. I remember chilling out in Ray Gateway's concourse during the final minutes of Update 3, so I could get a direct performance comparison when the servers came back online. When I logged back in to Update 4 a couple hours later, the game was a stuttery mess. I chalked it up to post-update server issues and went to bed, but over the next few days I found the stuttering and hitching persisted everywhere, even in empty space.

That's about when I stopped actively playing Odyssey because it just wasn't an enjoyable experience anymore. The issue continued through Update 5, but Update 6 seemed to lessen it back down to tolerable amounts. But now it seems that Update 7 has reintroduced the issue once more, so I guess I'm back to not playing much until Update 8.

It's worth mentioning that my typical ram utilization was down considerably during Updates 4 and 5, and that also appears to be the case in Update 7 so far (it went back up during 6). I've no idea if there's any correlation between that and the stuttering, but I thought it worth pointing out.

I play plenty of games with lower framerates than I can get in Odyssey, but the hitches and stuttering really ruin the experience, especially for someone who's prone to getting migraines from them. Here's hoping the team can find the root cause sooner or later, as I'd love to get back into Odyssey.

I'm getting more consistent FPS now on mid-level settings if I also lower the resolution below 1920x1080. Nowhere near 60fps on concourses or planet combat zones, but they aren't tanking below 20fps anymore either. The planets look far better to me after update 7 than they did before. There's still detail popping, but overall, the material quality of the planets seems better.

So, it's not quite a slamdunk yet, but it seems that some steps in the right direction have been taken.

So adapt yourself to a 20 fps. Still playable if you get used to.

Nope, it's basically crossed the Rubicon for me now if this performance sticks. 45FPS at 0.65X, I'm not accepting lower and 'getting used to it'. Been degrading with each update and now I'm dropping to 20's in the concourses so that means settlements will be the same. Not going to do that. Every update since the 2nd or so I've had to reduce something to keep it going. Started at 0.75X and 60FPS as my settings and down to 0.65X and 45FPS at update 6. Now I can't even hold the 45FPS at the same settings.

It's not a God machine by any means, but rendering a few buildings and people in a desert landscape or a single fairly unremarkable interior space should not be putting the screws to the machine.

still low fps on foot at starport. can't notice any improvement. even just docked in a space station elite for its almost year 2000 graphics is too gpu demanding. often parking outside space station only because i do not want to burn my rtx by just being docked and chatting to my friends ...

This is a server side issue and does not matter much of client hardware. Even a very high end hardware player encounters stutterings.
The stutterings are making ground CZ's unplayable most of the time.
Stutterings does not mean that NPC's won't accurately shoot you in the face with the new rockets. Which is stupid. NPC's with rockets. The most braindead adding since Odyssey was launching. Imagine being assaulted by 2-3 of them. Even G5 gear does not hold hiding behind something to avoid explosions.
My guess is that Frontier doesn't even play the game.
Also there are stutterings even when entering or dropping from supercruise or hyperspace.
Horizon's transitions were super smooth. Odyssey is a slideshow, mostly.
When AI does not react in CZ cause many times it bugs, the frame rates are super smooth. Which denotes server issue on how it manages the AI.
So yeah, update 7 made things worse.

I have been getting wild fps dogs and total game freeze since patch 7, never had that before.
Very disappointed as the game is totally unplayable with this going on.

Fps is a little worse for me with patch7 plus massive stuttering when entering stations. (could be servers today though)
from my readings a 3080ti appears to power its way through odyssey adequately. But at £1600 it’s a massive purchase.
i really cannot see this version of odyssey making it to console, ever. This is really a PC game at this stage.

Flimley
It's barely even a PC game just now.

FPS also dropped for me badly overall, but it's intermittent.

Also having some occlussion and rendering issues.

2560x1440, RTX 3080, i7.

Downgrading resolution to 1920x1080 didn't make any difference whatsoever.

Stutterings must come from server side. Game engine is not that complex not to be rendered in good frames by any modern hardware.
Horizons had no stutterings at all.
Every transition was very smooth. Entering stations, exiting, using supercruise/hyperspace instances, dropping on settlements with SRV.
Night vision was better. Odyssey ship night vision is inferior with bad antialiasing.
Almost no bugs. I couldn't even remember when I had a bug in Horizons, the only ones were disconnects, extremely rare.
Horizons was a much better game. IS a better game. While it lasts.

Well...I just checked my frames per second inside social spaces after Update 7 and it's actually worse by 4-5 fps. Previously I had been getting 34 fps and now I'm down to an average of 29 fps.

Excellent work guys!

HWiNFO's default polling rate is 2000ms.

This is SMT off, no manual affinity, same 100ms polling rate:

Cramming everything into four logical cores results in higher per-core CPU usage, for obvious reasons, but doesn't really change performance until I reduce it to three cores.
Man, Update 7 SEEMS to behave completely different to the previous updates. I can still set the GPU to 50% and not take a performance hit but... Even at stock settings my GPU speed will drop down to as low as 75Mhz. ...with no performance hit. Kinda makes capturing via screencap worthless. It also adds validity to the CPU bottleneck theory. I'm no 3d programmer but I wonder if FDEV is inadvertently passing work to the, general purpose, CPU that's optimized for and should be processed by the GPU. The GPU then being underutilized and the CPU choking on instructions not optimized for it.

Could be, but I'm not a developer, so how could I judge?. But one thing should be clear by now: they don't seem to spend much money on internal testing. Otherwise all these crappy updates would never have left the studios. And that is mainly a matter of management. I don't know if it's such a good idea to exploit their "fantastic" community for unpaid bug testing indefinitely.
The only thing I would have to say on that is that there was a month long "alpha" test where all of these issues were present and pointed out to FDEV.

This is currently what's I experienced so far...

Update 6: massive performance drops flying over mining settlements, minor performance hickups on concourses and on-foot in settlements.

Update 7: massive performance drops flying over all types of settlements and driving with SRV (go figure), minor performance hickups on concourses and on-foot settlements.

Something is going on with the revamped Cobra Engine and Frontier was not able to pin-point it yet.
