ED on Linux via Steam

ED on wine is currently blocked by strange CRC error on login behalf. Graphically there might be less issues - we just can't get logged in.

I hope this doesn't detract from their push for steamOS stuff, as I'd rather native support over emulation.

It is to make SteamOS more relevant, as older games won't get ported but if they can get them running most of time it is a win win for me.

I posted this over in the linux thread last night but got swamped pretty quick with the usual "stuff"
I'll give a few titles a go including VR but not Elite for now as my bandwidth wont manage that, assuming Id have to download it in steam linux, maybe I could link it ?

Hi,
ED work with Wine staging 3.5 + DXVK. So Proton should work in near future (i hope).

I'm on GNU/Linux since 2015, i don't wanted to wait 10 years for a native port of ED. I really miss Elite Dangerous and i want to believe i'll play the Q4 2018 update of ED.

It is still just training demo right? Or there is solution to encryption CRC issue as well?

Somewhat related question to people who tried it recently - how is current situation with AMD/Nvidia GPU drivers on linux?
Since there was no hope to run ED i did not bother with linux gaming at all (had to have windows anyway), but proton looks really interesting, so i am probably going to try it soon-ish...
Last time i've played around with it nvidia had proprietary blobs and AMD had something barely functional and severely outdated. Did situation improve? Which GPU (AMD/Nvidia) will be better for the task, assuming i am going to buy new GPU anyway?

Yeah, in this video it is the training.

I am using a AMD GPU (HD 7850). AMD released a new official driver. But the performance is not really good. The Mesa3D (Open source alternative) give me better performance.

For exemple i have tested Alien Swarm in Proton, with the official driver and Mesa. Mesa is clearly better.

For NVIDIA user, the official drivers give the best performance.

I've been messing around with both Proton and Wine Staging + DXVK, what I've found is Proton seems to kick up a rundll32.exe error when you install dotnet40 via winetricks where as Wine (bar the latest staging which has a bugged dotnet40 install) will allow it to install hence the launcher can be used.

Getting past the CRC error is the biggest hurdle, going by how well the demo plays though the game is literally a bug fix away from being playable on another platform.

WINE/Proton IS NOT Emulation

Just had to put this out there as many of you are confused here but Proton thus WINE is NOT emulation! WINE is an acronym for Wine is Not a Emulatior! wine translates Windows api calls into native Linux api calls so actually it runs the windows app/game natively! in all honestly I love proton and the potential as truth is with out it Linux will NEVER be a gaming platform whats so ever.

Hi Guys and Girls, just wanted to let you all know that GNU\Linux Debian 9.7.0 (AMD64) NetInstall, is very much worth trying.
I have found it overall, better than GNU\Linux Ubuntu (latest version) and also better than GNU\Linux Mint (latest version).
Debian 9.7.0 also comes with many more programs already installed, than Ubuntu or Mint.
Give Debian 9.7.0 NetInstall a go, I am sure you won't regret it. :) [smile]

Kind regards,
Howard Pew.

I have had success running ED in GNU\Linux Debian 9.7.0 NetInstall.
What I did, was to install the 30 day trial of VMWare Workstation Pro 15 Linux version (into Debian 9.7.0),
then create a virtual machine of the MS Windows 10 Pro (64bit) operating system,
in VMWare. This all worked fine :)

Kind regards,
Howard Pew.

But that's not running the game in linux.
Debian, steam, steam play with newer drivers than debian has in their repository is apparently what works.
No need for virtual machines, and soiling your beautiful debian system with win10.
