It's times like this when it would be nice to play Elite Dangerous Offline. I just hope the servers are more stable going forward. It's not like there are only 6 days before release or anything...

So I got into Elite Dangerous last night, and proceeded to try to put on the new decals on my Cobra... Big mistake. The game just displayed the spinning wheel and didn't do anything. So I proceeded to quit to main menu to try to load back in. Every time I try to load my character now the game crashes on me. Am I screwed? Should I just start a new character?

So far this has been my experience with every single major patch between alpha and now. Whenever, a new patch comes in I am locked out of the game for a couple of days. :(
 
There are many having problems connecting after the patch today. FD was nice enough to tell us absolutely nothing before they went home today so I guess we'll hear about it tomorrow morning - a little miffed this wasn't at least mentioned in part before they closed shop for the day :\
 
Frak it, started a new character and it works. I think addiction means "more willing to lose 15 mil credits and a fully stocked Cobra and Viper than to wait 24hrs for the devs to sort their stuff."
 
yeah, happened to me today.. or rather, yesterday :cool:
I've went out to menu, rejoined and it was still there, so I've picked it up then without further trouble..
 
Just bumping this out of principle, another major update and another 2 days of downloading the patch at 10% of line capability.

Been researching a bit and this hints at the net neutrality battle, apparently major US telecom companies were throttling cloud services like Amazon and Microsoft Cloud (I'm downloading from MSC at around the same rates). I believe there is a router somewhere outside SA that is set to drop some packets coming from cloud services.

If it's any consolation I'm in the UK on a 100-150MB connection and have had the issue since the beta came out (mostly downloading days after other people anyway due to time constraints). People keep trying to claim it's my issue or offering explanations of things I have tried myself (and many other people in that login/launcher issues thread have the same problem). All this evidence that there is an issue either with the launcher itself or with the download infrastructure and everyone keeps blaming the user.

Going with Occams Razor, if I can download using Steam at 15MB/sec and other services fine and it takes such a long time to download Elite, then the issue is either with the launcher itself (Frontiers problem) or with the infrastructure (Although it's hosted at Amazon it's also Frontiers problem to sort out since they're the ones paying for it).

They've had months to sort this out or offer something like combined HTTP/BitTorrent options ala Blizzard and haven't, it's starting to become a joke. i've just taken to leaving my machine downloading overnight knowing that it's going to take hours to download.

I have to agree, though I think you mean Mb rather than MB though, speed is normally measured in bits per second not Bytes. I use Virgin Media's 120Mb internet and regularly get over 12MB/s which is about 100Mb/s on other services.

The ED update download speed can be very bursty so I suspect there is a download bottleneck at Frontier. I hope it gets better before joe public gets their hands on this. We knew it was beta testing so can expect difficulties. Joe public will expect a finished product that works well.
 
My brother is having the same problem the OP has.

He lives in Houston, Texas and has AT&T Uverse 24Mbps download, 1.5Mbps up. On Thanksgiving day, he started the update because he knew I'd ask him why he hadn't been on Elite lately (he bought in at Beta). It took about 4 hours for him to download the updates on a day that probably few others were updating.

He's a computer guru (embedded systems is his specialty) and he doesn't have a problem downloading anything else.

I live just North of Houston, about 40 miles away. I also have AT&T Uverse 24Mbps, yet I update my game in 10 to 20 minutes.

So I dunno what the problem is. Some people just don't get the love.

The bad part is that everyone who wants to play on the 16th will really overload the download servers. It'll be hell.

Hello,

two weeks ago at the weekend the server went down.
The problem is that I had a mission in progress (deliver cargo).
The server was down some time so I went to bed.
Now after logging in some days ago the mission failed and the cargo is now stolen.
I also had to pay a fine.

The fine is no problem, but I don't like the negative entry in my statistics.
(The game is patching now, so I can not look up the correct expression).
@Support: Can this entry please be set to zero again?

Suggestion:
If the server is down you have to prevent players getting a penalty.
So please freeze the mission time until the player logs in again.

Its is "fixed" if you do a "clear save" I beleive you have a mission that is in a bad state that can't be completed or timed out.

In your network log you will probably have something like this.

{10:16:57} Disconnect: MissionUpdateFail-Timeout (6)
{10:16:57} Disconnect: MissionUpdateFail-Timeout (6)
{10:16:57} Someone requested a crash: MissionUpdateFail-Timeout

What happens on Server Maintenance?

.... or simply don't take on missions that you do not expect to be able to complete within the current game session.

The Mission time must be linked to Playtime and not to the servertime. I cant play 24h a day, some of us have jobs in the real world and can play only 1-2 hours per day....
What happens on Server Maintenance?

This would be the best solution.
Especially when you are an family father (like me) that suddenly has to stop playing (wife or daughter need me and it is something urgent).
Dear developers, please consider this idea (mission time should be inked to play time)
