EDSM Commanders Map

Are you a 'Im here' type of person or a 'Im here, but your not knowing who I am' type?

Just curious, as I like taking a look at the EDSM Cmdrs map and seeing all those little icons scattered to the 4 corners. It just amazes me though, how many don't come up with a name and location because as most people using EDSM would be Explorers or those who at least are not averse to Exploring in some capacity I would think, I kind of don't see the point of hiding who you may be.

Maybe they don't want inundating with 'Friend Requests', but I have to say that hasn't happened to me (as yet!).
And it's not that hard to work out where and what Sector your in with a little manipulating of the map.

Anyway, if you see me on the map in your area, don't be scared to look me up in game.

Ya know. I never really used that tool... Crazy to see how many people are out there in the black! I might start using it now that I have launched back out again. Making my way into the Lin-Shu Hallow before making my way up the Norma Arm past the Core.

Likewise, if anyone sees me give me a shout out - "skids for days!"

I've used it to see who's nearby, if any.

That said, it can be kind of humbling, especially in sparse areas of the galaxy. To give an idea, here's a photo from the traffic report from yesterday, with my position noted. Not a lot of traffic around...

I don't see any reason for hiding. It's not like gankers are gonna go that far out just for my humble self. And people can join me in MC most of the time anyway.

Also, it's like when I go hiking in the mountains: better have somone always knowing where you are :)

Yep its lonely at the edge, but in the middle ....

Personally, I keep my profile private because I don't really want people to see where exactly I've been lately. Even now, I'm sitting on data I'd rather not others turn in first. I know the chances of that are slim, but better safe than sorry.

That said, looking up if anyone else is nearby might not be a bad idea. It's not like I couldn't zoom away at the first sign of trouble, if we meet up. It's interesting to see though that you don't even need to go far from Jaques for player density to drop rapidly.

Nothing wrong with this view...I used to think this way, too. However, these days I treat EDSM as my tag-register and so if it gets logged into EDSM then I am happy. I really am not bothered about the "First Discovered" tags in-game. If it appears on EDSM, it's mine. I upload all of my scan data into the Celestial Bodies section as well. If someone is so bothered that they want to fly out a lot of kylies to steal a march on my discoveries...well, meh.

I Like your philosophy commander, maybe you could start a cult, I would join :)

I join too.
Because of this thread I opened my EDSM since ages and put my profile to public. I guess no pilot will take a look at where I am, fly there, tag my system, rush back and tag it for himself [alien]

And it even would not bother me. I am out there for the views, the serenity, the lonelyness, ... ... you get it.

Yep...me too. EDSM is my registry. If I'm first there, it's mine. And with what I have been surveying lately...if someone is able to follow my routes in and out just for that tag...well, have at it. It's still mine in EDSM and EGO.

Just starting out using EGO. I can't get the CommLink thing to start automatically so I tend to use the bulk upload feature instead. Works well. I hold a few interesting but obscure records!

That's fine, but don't forget that if you rely on free third-party sites, they might be gone without prior warning In my opinion, it's best to have a plan for that. After all, there was already such precedent even here in Elite, with EDSM as well. Best to make sure that your journal files are safe and you have backups too.

As for "surely nobody will go to the effort to go after my public discoveries and nab them": it's unlikely, yes, but people also thought the same thing about griefing at Sagittarius A*. Then some people flew combat Corvettes there. Similarly, somebody could look for types of planets (like ringed ELWs) and just find them there. There is actually precedent for this too: when someone was looking for Earth-likes close to the bubble that weren't yet on the ELW list but submitted to EDDB, they found a number of untagged ones. The Commander in question was good-hearted and didn't nab them for themselves, but if they wanted to, nothing would have stopped them from doing so. So, if you've found something rare that you do want your tag on, best to upload the journal data only after you've gotten the tag.

Of course, these are just my two cents though.

Yeah, I keep my journals backed up, mainly because I play around with my system enough that having to reload it is not unheard of :)

As to the griefing, and sniping and such...combat ships camping at SagA* was an inevitability, as was it happening in Colonia, and is when it eventually happens at Beagle Point. That is the unfortunate reality of some of the players in this game.

Don't get me wrong, I do like getting the tags in the game, and completely understand the risk of posting realtime journal updates tracking my progress, no matter how remote the actual risk is. I will say though that there have been a few first discoveries that I was a bit anxious about, but in the end, if someone wants to collect a dozen premium jumps just to snipe a double Wolf Rayet system 33kly from the bubble in a sector so far off the beaten path that I was the first to tag any systems in it at all...well, again, have at i, because unlike going and griefing at SagA* where there will be known satisfaction at the end, and there will be ships there for them to blow up...imagine the snipers disappointment if they made the 66kly round trip to snag a single system only to find out that I beat them back :)
