Should discovered byu tags be removed from m67 star cluster

ok so my 2p - not that its wanted ;) - if unfinished game mechanics or totally unpredictable consequences by using the in game tools or a bug means someone gets themselves in strife then FD should absolutely help out (however any unique gear / stuff or in this case naming rights) which were gained at the same time as this glitch should be removed.

but if it is down to the player making an error by not route planning properly and getting stuck or deliberately doing it to get somewhere they know they cant get back from, then the answer to the decision "should FD magically help them" is exactly the same as whether FD should reimburse players with ships etc that get destroyed in valid in game actions.

Yep. Agreed.

Just to correct Obsidian Ant's earlier posts, I believe it's possible to return from only the FIRST star in the cluster, by using the neutron star double charge technique - it's not actually possible to return from the main body of the cluster by any current means and hand in your data, as there are no neutron stars there. The bodies which have been impossibly tagged lie in the main cluster not the first star.

Yup! The game's unplayable now.
They've gotten their names on stuff that I will most likely never visit and that has ruined my experience and gameplay.

Stop being such a devilish reject...I bet if you were surrounded by 1000 corpses that you wouldnt care about that either! I have told you 31 times already and this is the last time, I will say no more.

This is a tough one. On the one hand I like it when FD step it to provide little bonuses for player groups who've organised unusual in-game stuff. On the other hand what they've done here isn't merely to give a group something that's not achievable because of a lack of in-game mechanics, like a custom skin, faction name or memorial station name. Instead they've taken something that is specifically prevented by in-game mechanics and permitted it through an intervention. That doesn't sit easily with me.

Here's how I see it: If the CMDRs who organised this expedition are definitely, unquestionably the first to reach these stars, and if there is never going to be an in-game mechanism that will allow CMDRs to visit and safely return from these distant systems then, no harm has really been done. Nobody else would be able to tag them, and if it's the difference between them never being tagged and being tagged by the expedition crew then I'm happy for the tags to be there.

Two caveats come along with that: firstly, the certainty that these CMDRs were really the first to jump there must be absolute. FD will have the telemetry on this so hopefully there should be no doubt there. Secondly, there must never be a drive technology improvement, Thargoid witchspace gate generator, Hawking radiation scoop or any similar mechanic introduced to the game that would allow these systems to be reached and returned from safely. If there is, then those tags should be removed once there is a legitimate way to claim first discovery on the systems.

Also, small side note, but once you have a scanned an object/system, and died, you can't go back and rescan it, because its already known to you. So, should it, in future, become possible to get there and come back, they would not be able to try and be the first to tag what they first discovered.
(emphasis mine)
The key is the meaning of "first discovered." In a meta sense, we can all appreciate if a player was the first to jump his or her ship into a particular system, post screenshots of the system map, the ship on the surface of its bodies etc. But in-game, it has a very specific meaning: the first person to scan the body, return safely and sell the data.

So as far as community and promotion of the game goes, these guys got there first. As far as the in-game fictional universe goes, they should be dead but for the Hand Of God reaching in and moving the pieces on the board. Whether you see ED primarily as a fun game with a bit of mutable lore attached, or as a 30-year work-in-progress fictional universe with which we primarily interact through a videogame, may to some degree dictate how you feel about this decision.

Frontier support have moved people from cluster back to systems were they can travel back to bubble and sell their data and get discovered by tag with their name on these systems. This is not bug or ch, frontier support have helped players to achieve stuff that is impossible to do in game.

That sounds very wrong and FD should reverse any of these rogue support actions.

I know Support are very very well regarded by the community because they bend over backwards to help players, but this is taking it too far.

Perhaps the popularity has gone to their heads?

So that's what I've been trying to ascertain - whether it was just that first jump-to star in the cluster that was tagged, or whether it was more stars/bodies in that cluster?

It's a subject that we're investigating now. Thanks.

Thank you.

If people are using work arounds then please remove the first discovered tags and data. Exploration of this scale is a grand undertaking in ED and allowing work arounds etc. will upset a lot of people and put the other hard work that Fdev do to make the game great in to the shade.

Fly safe pal

Although I see the difference with the support hopping in, I wish people would be this upset about any of the 1000 other unfair and unintended ways people get rich or kill other players via various exploits on a daily basis...

Because you hardly see any threads about those around? :D

I don't see how this harms *anyone* really.
Of all the things to be upset about, this is pretty damn minor in my eyes.

as for "it must be cheating because you cant get it via the games mechanics" - you cant get any of the special paintjobs which are locked to community events normally ingame either. Nor can you get a shiny "founder" badge on your account.
Do you propose stripping those away because its "so unfair" ?

And here is the question: which systems/bodies specifically have been tagged that should not be?

System i am currently in for example NGC 2682 YBP 1137 that is 419 ly from the point no return neutron star, i won't post pics because i am not sure if its against the naming& shaming rules in this chase to post pic with cmdr name.

Well people do get upset at that - this is just another example - if the as-yet unsubstantiated stories are true that is.

Also system TYC 814-1119-1. There are more.

Awaiting any certainty, lets argue the principle of the matter.

2 things. I died a some time ago, but had some ELWs noted in me notebook. I went back and could scan them and sell them and they now got my tag.

Second, a discovery is made when the knowledge is brought back to the cartographers. Not when it's scanned. This has been this way from the beginning of time.

Thanks. Looks like they changed that then. It used to be it wasn't possible to scan them.

I think we need to now wait and see what the results of Brett's investigation are. I'm still fine with it happening, i've got nothing wrong with FD recognizing special achievements in a special way. But if it was a mistake by support, people can at least put their pitchforks away.
