News Elite Dangerous: Arena Removal From Sale

People have issues getting together for so much as a cup of tea in the same location. I don't think requiring in-game organisation of any kind to participate in CQC will work if we can't even do it now clicking a button in the menu.

Just leave it as a menu game where it is now, and at best allow players to queue up for participation while docked. Then if you cannot improve matchmaking through networking, just give us the damn bots guys...surely SJA will appreciate a second breed of minion?

Yeah, more minions to CQC, release the wrath of SJA!

Structured team based PvP matches for powerplay benefits sound great to me. Throw in merits, credits and actually compelling objectives to fight for, ideally determined from powerplay context and that sounds like a winner to me.

But Elite is quiet far away from such content it seems.

I'm thinking more around fighting to attack/defend a station but I think just a basic merge of the two would certainly make it a little better as long as they expanded on it. Structured PVP seems a bit weird though for this - like "ok we'll meet here and whoever wins this little fight wins the station" LOL

I'm thinking larger scale. Maybe a little like a CG where you fight for your side and we fit 16 v 16 in and the battle could go on for days? Maybe have sectors you fight for. So if you're defending and get pushed back, you lose a hex (for example) and it continues like that until an outcome is reached.

Just came back to the forum. My translator reported the OP as saying "we can't even give this away". :)

Let me say this, and listen carefully because I'm only going to say it once.

That includes you FD....

1. Make CQC a part of the main game
2. Use SJA minions mixed with players. (that means only those who actually win will move on, and it could be a SJA minion)
2A. make a tournament that runs for 3 month, 6 month or even 12 month, to get to the finals you need to compete many places mostly against NPC's however in the end the finals should be mostly players.
3. Use a tournament mechanics where players need to travels around with their competition fighters.
4. Sell awesome fighter paint jobs, think of it as "CARS" win win situation.
5. Make race tracks on planets, that include tunnels and other obstacles, let's call it race and fight (pod racers)
6. Make some awesome audio from crowds and announcers (we know the audio team can pull this one off, so no excuses)
7. And don't F-it-up as you got some serious potential here, and a lot of work i know!

Initially I thought this sounded like an awful idea but to think there wouldn't be space races in the 33rd century doesn't make sense. You could do them in asteroid fields as well as planets or through massive space hulks. We have flying races on earth now so no reason why they wouldn't extended into space.

It would make the CQC a star shining inside the main game, but who I'm I do correct FD :D

Deterministic outcome of the matches. That was (is?) the fundamental problem with Arena/CQC. (No fun to play if there is no chance to win against high-ping or experienced players) high And lack of attention from Frontier (not even as little as raising monetary rewards)

Hello SENIOR community manager :D

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note about Arena below:
...snips...
Elite Dangerous: Arena continues to be available and supported as part of the wider Elite Dangerous game. Existing and new players that join the Elite Dangerous galaxy will continue to be able to enjoy the fast-paced action of Arena through the main menu. Existing Elite Dangerous: Arena client owners will still be able to enjoy Arena as they have always done.
...
Hi Ed,
What about Arena product keys that haven't been redeemed yet? I've given Arena to a few people to try and improve my chances of finding match! So far not all those people have redeemed their product keys, will they still be able to redeem them in future? Is there going to be a deadline for new redemptions?
Thanks :)

Like War Thunder and World Of Warplanes and MWO.

I agree, have some rep. It should never have been there in the first place.
Makes me wonder if in 12/15 months time Multi Crew will be going down the same road

Well, we can't say for sure, but I think multi crew will be popular.

Even if the crewing aspect turns out to be rubbish, I can think of other uses - if you're out exploring, x light years from anywhere and you find something cool, instead of (or as well as) mailing screenshots or shooting some video, you can invite someone from anywhere in the universe to share that with you, first hand.
One key feature I really hope makes it is for those ships with class 4 (or larger) PVH fitted, that pilot and crew can each board and launch an SRV - beaming buddies in to help you scan alien ruins? Yes please!

Time will tell, but CQC in its current form is just not attractive to me at all, whereas I have high hopes for multi crew.

I'd like to see Arena removed from the status panel in ED. I'm Elite at Exploration at Trade, and up to Master in Combat. I couldn't be less interested in CQC though, and will never work on that rank. At least let me hide it in the options! :(

yeah I dont consider arena to be part of the original game, it's a bolt on, fun but rank on that doesnt matter to me, the tripple ranks are the main one

If it remanifested as instanced main game team vs. team missions (think Battlefield) that actually have an ingame purpose and reward (other than CQC rank), I could well see such a match based setup succeeding. What Elite currently sourly lacks among many other things is structured PvP. Currently it has the equivalent of two or more MMO warriors hitting each other over the head in the middle of the field for no other purpose other than "they can". But apparently, structured PvP deathmatch that takes away from the already far too time consuming main game play time, is not it.

Imagine an instanced mission people can join that has one team trying to defend some "megaship" (or similar), while the other tries to destroy it or steal something from it.

I've posted on the FD forums and multiple times since before and throught CQC's implementation on Reddit and elsewhere.

CQC should have been structured as the Naval progression avenue.

Instead of matches- you have sortees.

Instead of Arenas - you have warzones

Instead of 1500 credits for a win or whatever the joke of a reward is - you have the best per-hour naval rank progression rate + competative pay.

For a "loss" (having your capital ship driven away), you get rewarded by choosing a rare material/piece of data from a selection of 3.

For a "win" You get to choose 2/3 out of a selection of 5

Instead of zoning in to a map that needs to be loaded - you get launched from one of the capital ships.

Each side has tickets and there are 2 ways to win. Run down the tickets, or kill all the capacitor things (how you get the cap ships to retreat currently).

Instanced "War zones" that preclude outside player ships - BUT keep the current warzone AI ships. Imagine the friends you'd make and fun you would have and the organic development of multiplayer and WINGS - when you are 3 others gel well and take down that Anaconda that is suppressing your right flank together. Think more horde mode than death match.

---

Why the hell the didn't do these things... why the hell they didn't solve... a half dozen problems in one fell swoop - I have no idea.

I've posted much longer explanations than the above. Detailed ins and outs and how tos.

---

Now imagine this -

Imagine if "Elite dangerous CQC" - "free weekends" dumped players into the deep end of this...

instead of this ...

Once a month make ti free, have it keep the player's progress and funds for if/when they buy the game. A nice little narrative link "I served in the Imperial Navy for 3 cycles then was discharged".

---

There could have been other more "Competative" modes - taking a bit of a page from WoT's special events.

A wing of 4 need to escort a Python through an asteroid field for [x] minutes while the drives repair while another wing has to take them down. One launched from one of the "CQC" stations, while the others Frameshift in from a carrier. Have it self contained and instanced - but have it influence the actual BGS and war conflicts.

---

There is so much more... but CQC could have... can still be a link that ties a lot of the game's disjointed parts together.

---

Everyone is exploit grinding for Navy rank - That should be a huge red flag for FD that something isn't working - make the reward for CQC participation - be the way to prgress towards the Cutter/Corvette - Still have the other methods... but how many would give up exploit grinding to... once again CQC in epic battles while making proper progress - over staring at log in/out screens for hours.

I'd almost be angry if it wasn't so poetically tragic.

But we shouldn't fool ourselves. The reason why the above never happened was because CQC was a sleight of hand to do this sort of wierd Xbox gamebro mountain dew EPSORTS MILLIONS thing.

I wish FD paid attention to the rise and fall and fail attempt that was Planetside 2's Esport attempt.

---

A viable esport needs at least 10's of thousands of players to grow organically *first* before any whisper of esports can be muttered.

YOU! I LIKE YOU! I LIKE THE YOU-THINK!

That's a pretty spectacular idea, and I think would still be amazing to see implemented.

One of my oldest posts with the same message

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=182985&p=2816951#post2816951

I've made much longer posts on both Reddit and these forums. It's hard to find them but the longer versions

-Tied Power Play into a similar structure as "warzones CQC"

-fleshed out the balancing pitfalls to avoid

-The benefits to the game, the players, and FD

Multiple times.

There was even a parallel idea in image form that was one of the higher upvoted submissions on Reddit.

I don't believe for one moment that FD haven't run across the idea or haven't thought about it themselves. and all the engine mechanics (especially with multicrew telepresence coming in) are already in the game - in one form or another.

CQC's foundation is pretty damn solid and I reject the accusation that the mode is tacked on (from the quality standpoint). It would be one of the most popular activities if it were seated in the game proper and was balanced to not be stingy on earning or rank progression.

One of the benefits I suggested was that while enlisted - your deaths didn't "count" in your rebuy screen - exactly how the SLF pilots function now.

I could go on and on - I still can't believe FD dropped the ball this badly. There is little/nothing they need to actually develop at this point.

Take CQC's dynamic combat and structure - and map it into warzones with the cap ships being the launch platforms. Hell we now even have Fighter launching literally in the game - with telepresence - It's just not from a cap ship.

Cqc, is obviously such a massive fail. What we all want from my observations is more attention paid to the core proffesions. I wish FD would think longer term and not respond to the chant of the obvious.

I honestly thought for a second this would be:

Pay us a tenner and we remove arena from the main game.

I was tempted.

CQC/Arena is a total waste of time imho. Good decision FD.
They should make it as a standalone game. Completely remove it from ED main game entirely. Sell it as a PS4/Xbox title. A sub-game set in the ED universe.
Everyone is a winner then.

Arena/CQC should be free, a "gateway drug" for people to play Elite: Dangerous. The matches should be "placed" (not actually in the real universe, but like arenas in other MMOs) somewhere relevant to the powerplay conflicts, and it could have some small effect on the BGS. Servers need to be able to be player-hosted instead of P2P - which is why CQC has failed to thrive. A bonus would be if CQC success gave some small value to main game players.

So yea, all it really needs is a lobby and player-hosted server list. Maybe bots, too.

It's so damn close to being a properly functional standalone game. It's a shame that FDev is abandoning it rather than finishing it.
