Elite: Dangerous Display Switcher

View attachment 9063

Note: Development for EDDS has stopped. Dr. Kaii's excellent EDProfiler tool does all that EDDS did and much more (link).

EDDS allows you to change graphics settings before running Elite: Dangerous. Especially useful if you switch between Oculus Rift and regular monitor, or if you switch display settings often for any other reason. It also lets you change GUI color, as well as enable a second window on your monitor for OR use.

EDDS is now hosted on Biobob and Wolverine2710s excellent EDCodex. Go here for description and download:

That could come in handy. If you added an option to change controller setups as well it would be golden.:)
ex. set-up 1 for rift, set-up 2 with regular screen.

Potentially a very useful utility.

Only one concern before I try it out though... What are the potential side effects if the config file format changes in future releases? Is there a chance for the config file to become unreadable by the ED exe and prevent the game loading?

That shouldn't be a problem. I'll look into it.

The tool edits the files Settings.xml, DisplaySettings.xml and AppConfig.xml. If ED changes any of these so that EDDS does not find the values it's looking for, EDDS won't start. Even if you delete all of these, ED will still start, with default settings. The two first files are recreated automatically, but AppConfig is not. ED still runs fine though. I will look into making an option to backup and restore these files.

The tool is looking for ED in the -1002 directory by mine is in -1001.

Edit: Fixed for now by hex editing EDDS.exe. It'd be nice if your tool detected the correct directory somehow. Short of a legit solution (not sure if Frontier stores the info somewhere accessible) maybe check for file existence starting at 1001, 1002, 1003, etc...

Excellent. Get hired by FD but can you add black & orange colours ;)
Is the GUI change colours for flightdeck HUD? That'd be awesome too!

The color settings are a quick and dirty hack Frontier threw in for people to play with. They've already stated they're working on the full version of this feature which will allow color customization, likely in game, without screwing up things like radar colors.

I wasn't aware that the directory was different for different users. I'll update it to look for the correct directory.

I'll look into it, but you can also play around with the values yourself and see if you can get it to your liking. Check this thread for an explanation about what the color hack is. This is where I got most of the presets, I did not come up with them myself. Here is a great color generator, so you can tailor it to your needs.

Did a quick fix where the number in the directory name doesn't matter, as long as it starts with FORC. Hopefully that'll take care of it.

This looks wonderful. I was wondering about how to switch between OR and normal screen without going through the settings every time. I can borrow the DK2 from work every now and then, so I'll be mostly playing on a normal screen.

Thanks for this! FD should end up integrating this into their game/launcher (and paying you for the great idea)

I can't get it to work. I have both files in the EDLaunch directory and run the EDDS app as Administrator. Any tips?

Did you download the latest version? Do you get any error messages?

I had 0.3 and have just tried it with 0.31 from your link at the top of the page. When I run it, UAC asks me to allow it to which I reply Yes. Nothing appears to happen. Would it help if I delete the three config files you mention above or is that going to screw it up?

No, that won't help. As long as you don't get any error messages it's hard to know what's causing the program not to start. It may be that UAC is causing problems. I have it disabled on my computer. I'll look into it.

Edit: Attached two new exe-files. The EDDS_admin.exe requires admin privileges. The other I just rebuilt with UAC enabled. Try both and see if they work.

Cant get it to work

Win 8.1 64bit. Intel I7, any help would be much appreciated, this looks handy for trying trading (I dont want to use the rift for trading)

Tried the latest release from the download directory; tried the other two in the previoues post.
Tried disabling UAC
Running as Admin
Running in Win 7 Compat mode
And all of the above from the directory which holds the GFX config XML

Latest error from Event Viewer
*removed, red herring*

FIXED: info a few posts down

I tried both first with and then without UAC enabled. No luck. No errors. I get the blue spinning circle next to the cursor for about 2 seconds and then nothing. I've even done a clean install of ED.

Edit: I'm running Windows 8.1 64bit as well.
