I just think they wanted to emphasize that you won't lose anything in-game by purchasing Horizons. They didn't want to emphasize that you won't lose anything if you don't purchase it because, well, they want you to purchase it. But they are not going to start everyone who doesn't purchase it back to zero. That would be a suicidal business move; on the order of shooting themselves in the foot with a bullet tipped with slow acting poison.

Updated as per Dev Update on 17th September.

  • Frontier will be answering questions at the NEC in Birmingham between the 24th -27th September where they will "reveal some cool stuff that’s incoming as part of the Elite Dangerous: Horizons season of expansions."
  • The Imperial Gutamaya Shipyards are releasing the Imperial Cutter and the Asp Scout and Viper Mk IV will see their debuts, too. [Link]
  • Release date: "This is planned for release at the same time as Horizons – the ships will be there for all, both season 1 and season 2, but of course Season 2 players will get a lot more, including Planetary Landings, so there’ll be something for everyone on the same day. This will bring the total to 30 ships (plus the Cobra Mk IV) available in game." [Link]

Personally not really interested in the deathmatch thing but looking forward to the changes in the main game with 1.4/1.5 & Horizons.

FWIW my money is on footage of Horizons, both landing and on the planet and news about other features. I'll go for major news of having crew in your ship - either AI or other players.

I'm hoping for in game footage and an explanation of what all 4 expansions in Horizons will be.
Don't think having crew in your ship will be in either of them, but I love to be proven incorrect ;-)
It seems to be needed though, otherwise when you are on an airless planet and your ship is orbitting the planet and controlled by AI, you are basically as vulnerable as an AI NPC ship. Which tbh is NOT that safe at all....

Sandro Sammarco confirmed on the live stream on Tuesday that being able to walk outside your ship is definitely not part of Horizons and is not going to happen "any time soon". My guess is it's at least 2 years away.

I think we'll see what the Horizon-Teaser showed: Landing, Driving and maybe get back in space again... It's sad that I can't see it live, because I have to work... but when I come back home I'll plug in my beamer and watch it with some cold, good german beer and something tasty from my netherland neighbours... ;-)

Tasty in reach for the event ;-) When the event is good, more enjoyment. When the event is bad I need it anyway... Hence: win, win.
