ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Horizons Set to Land for All Commanders

I bought a car for six grand. Twenty years later I scrapped it for 150 quid. I told the guy at the scrapyard it was worth six grand and he just laughed at me. Said nobody, ever.

My classic in the garage might be worth more on paper today than it cost back in 1975 from new. Take into account inflation etc, and... nah.

:D S

Here's why us LEP owners are upset, and I'm surprised it even needs explaining.

LEP holder here. I'm not upset, and here's why: I played Horizons for years, as well as years before FD decided to make it available to every base game owner free of charge. If at some point, many years from now, Frontier decide to let an aging Elite Dangerous become completely free for everyone, will you complain too? Or will you realize that you paid for playing the game right as it came out? Because realistically, that would happen at some point anyway, and not expecting this is extremely naive.

Unless you work for one of those IP hoovering companies who try to squeeze money out of otherwise abandoned IP?

EDIT: Oh and I get access to space legs when they come out, without paying anything at that point. That's what the LEP is for. If you compare the LEP price with the price of each component after deep discounts then yes, LEP is not worth it. But then what's stopping you from waiting another 10 years when ED is either completely free or can be had with all expansions for $5?

I vote to wait until the 27th or until Thursday 29th*, if there is a surprise, maybe a letter is being kept in the sleeve for that day and it is the Faulcon de Lacy Cobra MkIV, for me it does not make sense to continue blocking content when you are going to put free, the exclusivity really ends that day.

*: The same to give access to that ship, a setting is needed on the server.

I feel as though I've been abused - I bought a loaf of bread last week, and now they have it in store for cheaper !
As an 'investor' in their store, I expect a personal apology, how dare they do this to me.

<Rant>
I really don't get people who express similar to above. Buying a product from a store does not mean you own the store, or that they owe you any loyalty whatsoever.
Where on earth does this level of entitlement stem from?

FYI - I'm an LEPer, and am happy with what I've received so far, and really like the Look of Odyssey. When. bought the LEP I knew it was a risk / slow burner, but still feel as though I've got my moneys worth. I've not bought anything since the initial outlay.
Gamers tend to have a massive misunderstanding of what they are buying with each purchase.

The blunt truth is that even LEP-holders do not own a thing in this game, and are not owed anything either. The pass means that their account is automatically granted access to DLC/expansions on launch with no additional payment needed.

It is not a guarantee that there will be (x) amount of content, and it is not a guarantee that they will be afforded a "better value".

The LEP is nothing more than a convenience product.

I want the free stuff I paid for!

Depends on the gamer and how much disposable income they have. I'm too used to games costing £30 so anything above that getting spent on a game is something that will always be thought through first. With that decision being made based on things like if I've had a chance to play it or not, I got the LEP after having played for a while in the beta. Multiplayer only games that rely on players to make then enjoyable often tend to fall foul of hype waves so are easy to skip entirely, elite on the other hand had a solid enough solo experience which has since been expanded.

The vocal minority who claim to speak for the LEP's should be thankful that FD don't lock out their covas for one that says "Humbug" in response to everything they try to do in game.

Yes and I think Michael said that ED with the LEP will start to become profitable after the 3rd DLC.

It also seems to me that at one time Frontier had said that there would be small specific DLCs for LEP owners.

I'm a LEP owner and I am not upset about this, so please don't make it sound like you're speaking for all of us. And I am surprised it needs explaining, because it is frankly silly to me that someone would get upset, because someone else got something for free (while still having to pay for the next expansion, which "us LEP owners" are getting for free).

I believe you should have said "Here's why I am upset" instead, otherwise your statement is simply not true. I am definitely not part of your LEP tribe dude.

As a Horizons owner and Beta Backer, not only do I not have a problem with this, I have in fact said in the past this has been needed to be done. the problem with having Horizons as a system was that the dev team was almost duplicating their efforts by having to develop any given mechanic with two design philosophies in mind, one WITH Horizons and one WITHOUT. An example of this is the fact that synthesis material was for a while, only on planetary surfaces and subsequently synthesis was only available to Horizons' owners. Which meant in a fight between a Horizon's cmdr and a Non Horizon's cmdr, one could reload in the middle of a fight, the other cannot. Now the fix for this at the time was add synth materials to asteroid belts and mining rings, which was good. It also meant explorers with dead srvs could synth, life support should they need to.

More over other gameplay mandates for "core gameplay" had to be limited in scope and planets basically were left out because again, planets are not "core" to the game.

By merging Horizons, planetary surfaces of other horizons limited features can be included in the core gameplay loops and functions. Developed more as a holistic scope. My hope is that Fdev isn't going to simply repeat this mistake with Oddysey.
