ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Horizons Set to Land for All Commanders

They've also said that they're never going to offer exclusive ships as a incentive to upgrade again. What do you folks reckon they'll be an exclusive Vac Suit? :p

forever is such a strange word ... I am pretty sure I won't be able to buy a Cobra Mk IV in 40 (or 60, or 80 ... well, I'd also need quite some life expectation then) years from now. So I guess it is not forever-forever, more like "until the game servers shut down"-forever. They could also make them available only for one month per week for all other players, keeping it exclusive and at the same time not making it available for those peasants forever.

Didn't they say at one point, that when the game reached end-of-life, they'd consider releasing a standalone version, or release the server-side software publicly, or something of that nature? So you might be able to. If you life that long!

(I tried to find it, but I can't recall the wording...)

Edit: here we are...

We do not plan to shut the servers down, but understand it is a reasonable question. We are at the beginning of the game not the end and are focused on creating a game that we hope will be played for many years in the future. We do plan to take regular archives of the game and the servers, to preserve the game for the future.

Could the server code be released publicly some day when the servers are shut down? Yes. This is something we would do if for whatever reason we cannot keep the game going.

Well, there's 3 options.
  • when horizons is merged into the base game (or at EDO launch), the mk4 in the dev diary will be available for all.
  • it's not a mk4, it's a mk4a or a mk5
  • fdev made a boo boo including it. As the very last shot. Ok, I discount this option.

That was stated, yes. IIRC it was something along the lines of "freeze the status of the galaxy and release a standalone version"

Option 4 : They did it for the forum lolz ;)

What is Frontier's plan for when the servers shut down?

would need to set up a new profile on the console, then any game on it can be played
its my current plan for odyssey

What I would like as someone who bought and paid for Horizons, is an opportunity to acquire the Cobra Mk IV, not by buying it, but by salvaging a damaged hull somewhere, then bringing in the stuff to repair it and make it operational again.
Make it a mission.
Would be fun. 😷
that would actually be fun with any of the smaller ships, would really give you a sense of ownership
Edit: any of the ships actually, although building a cutter/vette would surely take ages

Maybe no exclusive ships, but I can see Odyssey only SRV's tied to ground combat, and shipless transport.
