No amount of discussion or clarification on a forum absolves a company from UK trading laws. Advertising an item with a free gift, and then changing the terms after people have handed over cash, is a no-no.

Well, yes it was. Just look at the archived copies of the store page that people are posting. Then absolutely unambiguously promised it for free, then changed the wording about a month later.
When the original announcement was made, several people asked on the forums does this mean the ship is given free or available for purchase, and FD gave the immediate answer that it means it would be available to buy, not that the ship would be given free. It was clear to them what it meant from day 1.
"Added to your account", means they are adding the flag to your account which allows you to buy that ship.
It's slightly open to misinterpretation, but I don't think UK Trading Standards would see it as false advertising as they never said it was a free give of a ship that would appear in your owned ships - that was just what some players wanted it to mean. What they did say very specifically is that nobody else will ever be able to buy that ship, which also kind of implies that you have to buy it.
I'll grant you, if I was in ED's marketing communication dept I might have worded it a bit differently, but probably that's why I don't work in marketing.
The ship is a low cost ship anyway so does it really matter that much?
