elite dangerous is a true success

Yeah, I think Elite: Dangerous was pretty great for what it was – awesome foundation (galactic and stellar sim second to none, cool scifi 'world' setting, first-person spaceship game-play with very good and comprehensive 'flight' control, great soundtrack, etc.) which had great potential and direction, and quite fun to play in its own right.

Horizons added some great stuff (some world surfaces, SRVs), but also a fair amount of stuff I'm not fond of (Engineers, crafting). The way they were implemented as an arbitrary MMO style progression slow-burn or grind-fest, I would have much preferred some sort of mission system that made some sense in quantity and contextual purpose for given Engineers and Commanders.

Was it Beyond where they changed Exploration and got rid of the ADS? Yeah, I preferred the old style. I like having an overview of where I am and then choosing to explore in first person cockpit game mode rather than radio telliscope mobile app game mode (this goes for the DSS poke ball game mode as well); naturally your millage may vary. I also don't like the exploration mode and combat mode cockpit HUD switching that was added. I generally go exploring in a combat capable ship (think tactical scout and forward guard), so it's a bit of a needless hassle for me playing on the surround hi-fi on the big screen with a game controller from the comfort of my couch, wireless keyboard and mouse on the coffee table on standby.

Odyssey? Well, it doesn't run well enough for me to want to play it instead of Horizons (getting roughly one-seventh to one-ninth the FPS in the hangar menu) outside of testing, though I have had a bit of fun walking around my ship and in stations – a nice little bit of a change of view and immersion, but with that performance, I wouldn't want to live there.

Cheers.

I mean, ED is sure better than Elite 2... released in 1993, 29 years ago. Shockingly.

I really like Elite Dangerous though I still miss a few 'features' from Frontier: Elite 2 and Frontier: First Encounters

#1 being the relativistic travel; which of course doesn't make sense in a Multiplayer game.

#2 being the 'take off and land on any planet' (or at least I remember it that way). Even with the limited graphics of the Atari ST or Amiga, and then later PC (F:FE) it was cool seeing the various atmosphere colors as you came and left planets and so-on.

#3 Earning ships for missions, rather than just buying them outright. (I think Elite Dangerous just requires ranks or credits..)

For me - the X-Series sort of took the mantle of Elite starting with X-Beyond The Frontier in 1999, though that game sadly also never went to planets..

Anyway while I'm very positive on Elite Dangerous (though it's been too many years since I last played.. about ready to get back in) - I just wanted to point out the old games have a few 'features' that make them just that much more special..

In terms of presentation (sound design, game feel, gfx, sound design, steller forge) agree definitely a succes.

In terms of gameplay and mechanical design. Falls really short unfortunately. Hopefully with the anounced roadmap, this will finally improve somewhere in 2023.

I'm making a note here; "Huge success"
Are you still playing it? Or, how long did you play it?

I'm still playing after 5 years (almost) so the game, in general, must be a "Huge success" for the number of players retained after a couple of months playing it, or am I perceiving "success" incorrectly?

Yes, I am. That wasn't a malicious comment.

The thread title reminded me of the awesome Portal song and I couldn't resist quoting it.

Elite Dangerous Is an incredible game.
It’s had me hooked for 8 years solid.

Yes it has had and still has its problems, the first person shooter is pants, the Odyssey missions are a bit meh, Powerplay is a nonsense, engineering is incredibly grindy. I could go on

Bu when I sit there in VR, sat in my x-rocker chair that shakes the room when I boost, with my X52 HOTAS to hand…
well nothing, nothing comes close!

The things that ED does well, it does incredibly well, but it's also left a lot of stuff to die on the vine.

I just hope that at some point in the not too distant future FDev add some new gameplay that suits my playstyle 🤷‍♂️

I find that the OP is clearly crazy and should be banned forthwith in case he infects any other forum denizens with his craziness.

On the gripping hand though... he does have a point.

I find Odyssey fun to play, mostly because it gives me a chance to do what I always wanted to do.... get out of the damn spaceship for a bit and go hang in a seedy bar somewhere waiting for a mission to turn up.
The FPS aspect of odyssey is a bit 'meh' really as theres other FPS games out there that do it better... but its a welcome distraction from being in orbit with a high powered ship and owning everything in a CZ and the whole 'covert op' stuff can go hang as I've played Alien:Isolation and had enough of sneaking about.
Would i change anything.... reducing the grind for personal weapons would help. especially when unlocking the engineers. (still only got 6 opinion polls)
But hey ho onward and upward

<<old enough to remember when this was all wireframes ;)

Personally, I am very happy they added space legs and I probably would have stopped playing the game by now if they hadn't. It needs some improving from the FPS point as I feel the npc's are a bit too harsh but I would admit I am not a brilliant FPS gamer. The space stations are an absolute pleasure to walk around, and they did a brilliant job of that with visuals and sound.

I didn't say that I don't play other games. ;)
no, but you said this..."There is no other game that I have played for literally thousands of hours. I think that speaks for itself." and that is what I responded to, with a list of games off the top of my head, that I played for literally thousands of hours. Never did I assume you dont play other games. lol.

says you haven't played a lot of other games tbh :)
I’ve played a lot of games, but I generally don’t stick with one long term. Several MMOs, RPGs and Simulations where I’ve spent in the hundreds, but most of my game library hits in the 40-60 hour range.

According to the Codex, I’ve put in 2 weeks and 4 days into Elite, which puts it pretty high up there for me. That’s accumulated since 2014.

I’d expect that the vast majority of people never see anywhere close to thousands of hours into any particular game.
