Elite: Dangerous Legacy League

... I finally just bought another copy of odd for my second account. I really hope those same forum people don't read this post.

It was priced at a very significant discount though, karma is still in tact :)

But hey, i like what i see, and all this doom that looming on the horizon.... might have to go to colonia for the first time under my own steam i think...

No doom in this thread. Only the glory that is Legacy! :)

Edit: Just to be clear. I have nothing against Odyssey. Legacy is just a better fit for me. :)

Know why i did it? Overall today i like what i see. The specifics include, 2.5 years after launch:

  • The skybox has been restored to exactly horizons glory. All is well. The game looks great overall, apart from the approach to landable planets. Overall im just enjoying the visuals. No idea when the score flipped.
  • I always hated the elevator music in odd stations that certain demographics stereotypically consider appealing (your pilot in the tutorial?), they've added a streamer mode feature which turns it off, back to just ambience. Really this is huge for me.
  • They may have fixed a long standing bug that was fixed and broke again in horizons and odd. When you use a docking computer, if you lower the landing gear yourself, the docking computer would complain, say your landing gear wasn't down, play the sound to lower landing gear.. it was a mess. They fixed it years ago, and fixed it again in the last 6 months, in odd at least. Oh wait, this might be still broken with carriers.. we'll see.

See i'm a simple person, good things means buying them. No need to pretend the game isn't doomed when it is :) And for my part, I don't care that its doomed, still can be fun.

Have fun! You'll only hate yourself for a short while. ;)

A fair while back - but not soon enough. It was earlier this year that I noticed I could run EDO on my 1070 laptop in 1080p - at least well enough to jump a FC.

Almost...

Not on Steam.

Ironic how Starfield envy actually has me "considering" (that's too strong a word, but I lack a better one) Odyssey, ON SALE... It runs like rubbish on my computer and I hate the new lighting, but I might be able to work some magic using 3Dmigoto. I'd try it on Horizons 4.0 if I were truly tempted.

Anyway, by the time I actually have time for such shenanigans, Starfield itself might be on sale!

Not on steam (instant gaming) :) I don't feel bad for a second, i was skimming though my order history on frontierstore for both my main accounts yesterday... And i bought through steam jwe dlcs a few weeks ago, back to my old habits...

I would strongly recommend then trying horizons 4.0 to see whether its worth buying odd for your machine. In most places where there's 3d models, enough of the rendering is different and has an impact on fps. Its the same client though, so as a consolation, if you do choose to buy it, there won't be an additional download.

Though i think at least ian and phoenix_dfire run odd with lower end gpu's and are still posting on the forums.. so they might have found something.

... The game really was unplayable until they fixed the skybox (including the planets being stuck on the skybox!). The last patch (which i didn't try until now) might have done wonders as well.. though no idea, i've changed a bunch of things on my machine, rebuilt windows 10, running a much more modern nvidia driver, and using the launcher from frontier (not from steam).

ps. You can buy odd from steam and use a frontier account, no steam active at all, by linking your frontier account to the steam account where you have purchased the game and dlc. Also if you only ever have had a frontier account and want to take advantage of the better prices in the steam ecosystem, you can generate a free steam key from your frontier store page, link it all up to steam, activate the generated key on steam, buy odd on steam, then play via frontier (or steam).

The main improvement in oddity for me was the elimination of the disappearing planets in supercruise. That bug stopped me playing EDO completely, now I can supercruise in a system without feeling like tearing my eyes out.

Yeah i forgot about that one. Was a show stopper for me too. Well its best not to think about the 2 years it was broken for.. i wasn't playing it either.

No really, its quite good. This might be another pattern in frontier, they release half baked products, but then when chance has it they actually finish it, they don't let people know, which im sure is abandoning a reasonable percentage of people who would have come back, but gave up waiting. I wonder if they even know.

Were there any improvements in the last patch ? 16? I didn't try that until a few days ago. For me, the averages changed to have me flying around not noticing anything.. apart from the planet tech. I was just playing the game, not literally at every step reminded the game was broken in some way. Yeah i'll take that.

I'll even concede the planet tech looks.. okay.. from a distance, its just the approach that is horrendous. It doesn't suspend disbelief, not plausible as real to imagination.

Almost...

Really? Whats missing? Also for the first time i'm running with supersampling greater than one.. and it really makes a difference to the supercruise view bodies, wasn't expecting that. I also wish the burning glow from stars was like it was in horizons.. but very minor complaint.

Basically, odd is roughly old elite now. Awesome. With carrier interiors. Maybe they can start adding more things than glorified community goals? Also is there a list of known mission bugs that are unlikely to ever get fixed? Should probably treat this game state as precious, no need to hit the same potholes you all did.

The most honest answer I can make there is possibly - no more fanfare is made over performance improvements, and I only play on the laptop occasionally (when I need 2 accounts active at the same time) so would need a massive bump to notice.
Really? Whats missing?
The monochromatic light from stars ("O" & "B" most noticable) may or may not be apparent - and at any distance from most stars light becomes white.
"O" class landable bodies, in particular, are missing the purplish tint.
The skybox may or may not darken to Horizons standard in some systems.

So, my "almost" meant just that.

Afterthought: My PC has been upgraded a couple of times since EDO launched so noticing performance changes in EDO updates since U5 is only apparent by a reduction in overall energy used by the PC - but, I can, with certainty, say that, since EDO launch, the gains made are pretty good. I'd think that even @Old Duck would have a satisfactory experience on his laptop - it is the next generation up from my own, so noticeably more capable!
