Elite Dangerous now on Steam

You can always change your mind, it's a matter of how you handle the change (which they did very poorly). They provided a new option to get the game (on steam) without providering their preexisting customers the option to switch over. The fact they were confident enough to say for the longest time there would not be a Steam release begs to question their motives for releasing it on steam. Maybe the game isn't selling as well as they hoped, maybe they just want to scratch the bottom of the barrel for a few more bucks. If anything is for sure, it was not for the benefit of the customer. That is what people are upset about, they feel cheated and wronged.

So by that theory you buy a car that has a stock standard stereo system in it but a few months later the dealership offers and upgraded stereo system when you buy the exact same model. Are you entitled to an upgraded stereo because you bought it earlier ?? Get real!

Why..... ?

Do you lose anything with that?
I don't understand.

Yeah, because it's totally the same thing...

And how Steam upgrades your ED?
Your comparison does not make any sense.
This is still the same game - still authenticated by Frontier so they can assign each existing account single Steam key and voila, simple as is and everyone is happy. Except you.

Just woke up and seen this snowballing, wow! Looks like the Steam release might have come at a bad time to expect a quick response over the long weekend.

I would love to see a Steam key for my account. Its the home of my gaming where basically ED is the only external game I have. It would be a nice gesture to offer this to those who helped support the game both in time, money & feedback to help make it a success. To show some love to those who love the game... but...

Until FD come back with an answer we can only speculate why they haven't offered this already or being very cagey about giving an answer.

The question I have is why?

Why wouldn't FD offer a Steam Key?

- Is it a financial reason (cost to FD too large)?
- Is it a time issue (better putting resources into the game or other things than sorting out Steam Keys)?
- Is it a technical issue or limitation (complex and will take some time to review and create a solution and not willing to discuss at this stage)
- Is it an oversight (FD didn't think many players would care so made a judgement call)
- Something else I'm not thinking about?

Why would FD offer a Steam Key?

- Potentially hundred of thousands of players sharing their ED gaming experience with their friends. (More publicity & reach - more sales?)
- Would be a positive gesture good for customer relations. (risk a lot of unhappy customers too)

There is clearly a large number of players who would like this, and all the reasons above could be overcome given the desire to do so. I'll wait eagerly to hear an official word back on this and hope for a positive outcome (for all).

Have a good weekend everyone! Fly Safe.

You probably want to check that analogy again... because it's not even close.

Explain how it's any different ?

With your reasoning Frontier could start charging for updates because the updated game is "upgraded" (and I'm talking about bugfixes, etc)

Anyway, cars are not the same as digital videogames, I thought that everyone knew that, but it seems that I was mistaken. My bad.

I just logged into steam here in the states. Read the first 20 reviews. All for the most part overwhelmingly positive. Gamers love to play good games...ED just takes more effort and your rewarded for it. I have been playing since 12/16 and one of the original 1984ers. ED can stand on its own with the best games Steam has to offer. FD knows this and put there trust in the product. The least we can do is trust them...Steam is a win for everybody and ED has hit the big time! Relax people, if the game quit working tomorrow, the last several months have been a blast....

Can't wait

We haven't removed any option - as for providing steam keys for people who already own the game we'll look into it and go from there.

Michael

Waiting patiently for the Steam key conversion option :)
(I have a thing for collecting games via Steam, and currently Elite is the only actively played game I own that isn't loaded into Steam)
I love GOG too but it's a different market.

premium beta backer; steam key +1.

Let that sucker have some odds to update (via steam) when I'm at work or sleeping, not when I get home from work and realize I need an update. "1days10hours56minutes remaining" some of us have fairly terrible internet speeds with no ISP upgrades available and no practical option to move. I love the game; just know some backers won't like having the game being more of a hassle just because they bought it early; it will be seen as being penalized for being a more dedicated customer that even paid more to bug test. We have all seen some backers of other games turn into raging trolls when they feel slighted, it has and will happen like it or not more trolls = lower chance of success.
This comment isn't for the team; I know they will do it. Hi trolls xD.

Steampowered is complicated and difficult and we paying extra premium for the ED in Frontier why should they use steam to distribute ED?

100% agree on that!!
I get home and realize oooh, update...4hours befor to go.
I say > the pc was on 7 am to 3pm , if I was on steam it would be updated now.<
I love the game but I like autoupdate.

After no SP, I didnt ask refund because I hope we would get steam keys.
If no SP and no steam key ,I will ask refund now!!

Hah, the steam release came by surprise! You had no reason to believe it was coming, nor does it have anything to do with Offline mode. Don't be silly. If you kept playing until now, and haven't already asked for a refund, then you stand no chance now!
