Always dubious when I see a female avatar . . . .

Yes he does. It's the only sane way to react to what happens here.

Honestly, the main problem witH FD giving out Steam keys for free is the following:
Giving out a Steam key is ususally only 'giving access through steam'.

Elite: Dangerous is a bit different here. Buying, of getting 'gifted' a game on steam, of getting a steam key from the publisher in this case entitles you not only to download the game through Steam and add it to your library here, but also to create a new Account.

In fact, right now that would mean FD had to gift every player a full second game license / account. I totally understand that this is not going to happen that way.

They need to find a way to hand out Steam Keys that do NOT entitle you to create a second account. That will not happen throughout the easter holidays, and I am afraid this will take a few extra days to sort out in the weeks after easter.

So the sane thing is to keep calm, and wait. FD said they are looking into it, and when they solved this dilemma, they will, I am totally sure about that, happily give us the Keys that add the Game to our steam libraries while not gifting us a full second account.

Thing is: FD is putting effort in this. Effort / time (and thus money), they are spending on us, the people that already payed (a lot) for this game. They are doing the work to sort this out for free, besides or instead other stuff they could do to improve the game (like adding Thargoids). Honestly, I'd personally rather have Thargoids sooner and a Steam key later, but I am grateful of the work they put in the game and they put in the community so far. Please don't press the guys as Frontier. They probably do the best they can. And again: it's easter. There's probably no one on the Steam side right now to help them solve this, if they are going to work through the holidays anyways.

This was already addressed a while ago.

1. They can setup a system where you deauthorize your frontier copy in exchange for a Steam key.
2. They can, when generating the product key, tie this to an account so that when you try to create an account they would see the product key you're trying to activate is actually associated with another account and therefor deny the activation of the product.
3. They can generate keys for a version of the game that does not give out a product key to activate the game.
4. They could make the base-game free and have the license be DLC (Though as I later learned, this may be an option Valve might not go with without certain prerequisites)

So all in all there are plenty of straight-forward and very obvious solutions at their disposal, it does obviously require some work on their part, but their poor planning should not be a valid excuse though. With all that being the case there would be no harm in saying "Yeah we'll give you your keys, we just need to have some developers set it up for us", yet this is what they chose not to do, meaning that the issue you brought up has nothing to do with this current situation we're in.

This is my first post on this forum and I just wanted to add my voice to this thread,
I honestly thought kickstarter backers and beta backers would be looked after as without them the game would probably not even exist ?
Its just the decent thing to do :)

It isn't because the game was bought somewhere else/ Early backers paid between 150 to 300+ dollars just to test this game in an early state. At least part of the reason for this game being so expensive early on was to attract people who were the most in love with the idea of the game. Making such people feel slighted would be bad for business; don't think anyone has the power to stop the troll transformation if that happened.

Steam Advantages...
The game auto updates itself; you will never come home from school or work, to find out that the update could have downloaded while you where away or slept. I have about 180 games or so on steam and they all update themselves; the alternative I don't have time for. Also some of us have slower internet with no option for ISP upgrades in our areas and no immediate practical way to move.

Many of us use steam as our entire gameing friends network since like Counterstrike... a lot people like gameing with the same friends, they have always gamed with, on the same platform.

Modding is the easiest on steam of all platforms to create, share and use player made content in a variety of games.

Friends can request to watch you game to see how it looks or for fun whatever.. Think twitch tv with public and private friends options.

I could easily keep going but I'm not

I bought this game like a year ago from the company that made this awesome game. That same company put it on steam which is a platform that I love and millions of people use constantly. People are exited about steam keys obviously as I type on page 142. The Keys are coming and I don't see how it is going to affect you.

I'll never understand this what seems to me to be an 'I don't like ice cream so nobody else should get to have any' discussion. Not something free something that was paid for.

I was wrong and I've changed my opinion. I think the keys will become available to placate those who enjoy playing everything through Steam. I take back my old post, as I had no idea how big Steam has gotten. Mea Culpa.
I read this whole thread, where is my prize?

Throws steam shaped cookie for prize

They said the game would never be on Steam, that it was impossible, and the only way to get it, ever, was to buy it direct. I wouldn't mind but this game was expensive and I feel like I've been cheated, let me sync my steam account with my game account. I want proper access to the community like everybody else.

I'm also very hesitant to buy skin packs and other extra's while the game is in this weird limbo. So if anything you'd be making me want to play the game again and making both the game, and the store more accessible. Given the cost of the game, I really think it is unreasonable not to provide a code.

The quote was taken from the steam forum and i have to agree i am Feeling a bit lied to and cheated and adding the game to my non steam section is not the same Fact is they should offer all of us a key and stop messing around with us it costs them nothing to do so or they going to lose potential customers for there expansions or dlc's not only that but there reputation.

Another Reason why they would better hurry to get us some keys for Steam: people like me would like to review that unpolished diamant to raise its rating on Steam to an appropriately higher level. ^^
So get it on Frontier!! :D

If they do offer a "convert your license to a steam key" thing, then I'd hope they do it for everyone, not just us KS backers.

But again, I do not care, and neither should you. The only good thing about having a steam key is that we could post reviews for ED there. You get the steam overlay by adding a game shortcut to ED in Steam just as if it was a normal Steam game, and people can see that you are playing "Elite Dangerous" in your friends list. Beyond that, Steam is useless for ED, since you can't "join friend's game" via the steam friends list anyway - because you don't have to, just launch the game and meet up!

I don't expect there was any malice or conspiracy behind the decision, and certainly no "screw you all you loyal backers".

More likely it's just a mixture of a lack of experience with Steam, time pressures, too many cooks, and a teaspoon of naïveté. Mix that in with a large dollop of people in the games industry fearing for their jobs and those lower down not speaking up when a bad decision is made and you've got the cake we're eating.

So not money grabbing evil corporation nonsense.

Just plain humans being humans.

But they've got the message and we just have to wait now.

I expect till at least Tuesday, given it's Easter weekend.
