Elite Dangerous now on Steam

Well this took me by surprise. I think its a good move to shift copies of the game. Steam is THE portal for PC gamers, and a huge market.

I've been doing this for a while but it would just be nice to be able to run it through Steam as you would with any other game, I understand that that's a good alternative but I've already seen two or three posts in the Steam Community since it went on there from backers and previous buys asking if they could have a way to authenticate their store purchase on Steam. I for one just want to place it in my Steam library for all to see. :)

It would certainly be nice and a good idea - might upset a few people if they can't. As other people have mentioned I think its likely going to be useful for people to write reviews etc.

Hopefully we'll see lots of new players getting into the game. :) I'll post an announcement on the steam group. :D

Well, if you are a "light Steam user" then you probably don't care about the benefits of the platform as much as others do.
Indeed, which is why I asked the (genuine) question.

Launching from Steam as a genuine Steam game gives you things like a time played counter, the ability to upload screenshots and videos to the game hub, the ability to upload artwork, etc.
IIRC the time counter used to be in the client, not sure why they removed it. I wouldn't class that as an issue that's going to cause the world to end. I can see how the game hub is a bit more important, especially around screenshots and videos. There are some amazing shots created by the community, but they tend to get buried on the forum. I can also see how it would be useful to be able to see which of your friends are online and playing the game. Does that work if you add it as an external game?

I can also see some benefit in having Steam manage the launcher versioning, as it's a bit clumsy to have to download an installer every time it changes.

And in the end, a lot of us bought the game on Frontier's store because they said it wasn't coming to Steam, so between getting it here and not getting it at all we got it here. Now it's on Steam, and we'd like to get it there, as it was our intention all the way.
That's fair. FWIW I'm not against existing users getting a key (I'd probably add it to my collection also) but I'd like to understand why it would be such a big problem if we didn't. Does it really just boil down to a matter of principles or is there more to it?

We haven't removed any option - as for providing steam keys for people who already own the game we'll look into it and go from there.

Michael

Excellent news.

It's quite apparent there's some demand for it.

We understand it may take some time to decide and arrange though. Here's hoping for SOON™.

Titus, old boy! I thought you were in self-imposed ED cold turkey/significant other bliss in London! Was the drama index on this thread high enough to tempt you out of the extortionately rented wainscoting too?

I'm still active on Twitter, and the beacon on this thread shines brighter than Polaris.

I'd avoided the forums for a few weeks and this manbabying in this thread over how you launch your game leads me to conclude I'll continue to take another few weeks out after this.

Wise words. I should follow your example. And oh as usual some people try to raise as big of a ruckus over the offline issue as possible. Which, at this point, is no longer about "I have a problem with the game" but instead "I want to cause as much trouble for FD as possible".

Great news on the Steam launch & hope the new via-Steam-CMDRs don't have too many troubles getting accustomed to ED :)

A good way for FD to distribute the keys to existing players would be to send them out as non-transferable gifts to registered email addresses, i.e. to prevent resale of keys. If the existing players that want Steam keys and have different registered email addresses (why?) for ED & Steam then, well, they can be dealt with on a case by case basis - screenshots to prove account ownership etc - as I doubt there'll be many.

Please let us transfer to Steam, do it like KSP I don't see any issue with it. I don't care if it's the same thing, I'd love to track my hours played and screenshots kept in one place.

You're welcome to set the record straight then, instead of just saying "Not true".

Please be kind - if you believe that frontier is trying to rip you off, you really shouldn't be here to be ripped off. Otherwise, let's have a civilized discussion instead of critizing folks off every time they add something.

The keys cost nothing, and all you have to do is contact Valve to obtain them, then add a key generator that ties to accounts to your customer page. I fail to see how this is difficult. Unless you've a better explanation?

Will they also lose a chunk of add-on sales, i.e. expansions and paintjobs, if a player converts to steam? If so then that seems to me to be a good reason to keep the existing customers on their current distribution system.

I added ED as a non-steam game the moment I installed it.I'd love to be able to integrate it properly.

I'm in the same exact boat. If I had known it would be coming to Steam I may have even waited to purchase it.

I'm glad to hear Frontier is looking into the possibility of Steam keys for us.

WoW! Dedicated on Steam. Thank you so much. but can we have please a Steam Key for Register our Copy in Steam? I Don`t want Buy it 2x. If you see my Signature you will see i like Steam and have alrdy many Games inside :)

Another +1 for a Steam key

I paid for the game and beta access, with the understanding that it would NOT be released on Steam.
Had it been clear to me that it would, at a not so later date....I would have waited.

We all supported you guys at FD....will you support us?

As far as Steam achievements go I think ED only needs 4:

Elite in combat
Elite in Trade
Elite in Exploration
Triple Elite

That is all.

I hate achievements for minor tasks. It is like giving everyone a gold medal for competing in a race.

As Michael said above. We're looking at player feedback now, as was always the intention.

I mean fine and all... but what exactly did you expect to happen? Some things require feedback somethings are just a bit obvious!

From the announcement I don't think it was clear that interest in steam keys for existing players was being sought. Looks -little- bit like an ass covering move!
