Elite Dangerous now on Steam

Considering the total purchases for the first weekend - could one presume that the powers that be at Frontier are all now Steamies!

Oh boy, if you thought the previous OPEN vs SOLO threadnaught was bad, just wait until thousands of steam users realise how the current system works.
Also Elite: dangerous is currently tagged as an MMO on steam...

The definition of MMO appears to be highly variable.

nah mmo just comes with expectation, or presumption. thats all really, you slap mmo onto something some ppl will obviously think wow or eve, that is what will be the first instinct.

then you have to look at the steam forum and see ppl asking if it has monthly subs and other things. like how the server structure works etc etc.

mmo is almost entirely synonymous with themepark mmos because well they dominate the mmo market.

First i was not going to buy elite dangerous because it was not on steam and when it was told it will not come to steam i bought it anyway even tough i avoid games that are not in steam and now its on steam :D

I really hope i do get a key because i like to have all games in one place so its just one click to install and play. I just hate to have lots of icons on desktop and try to find games from there. Its really not the end of the world but it would be nice to have a steam key. Sorry for not ranting and sending death threats :)

32 isn't massive?

Can you link me to the actual meaning?

Previous threads have tried to define this so I'm not even going to bother, it's worse than a thread about "Chemtrails".

Basically if you stayed in the same instance for the whole time you played the game then 32 player limit would mean it didn't qualify. Since that limitation doesn't exist and your actions affect the wider game universe then Elite does qualify.

Massive... Loads of people interacting in a persistent game universe
Multiplayer... See above
Online...

mmo is massively multiplayer online, its subjective what you consider to be an mmo, i'd say personally, anything that will allow more than 100 players on screen or at least some what visible in one area of one server/world. but that would be going by what is considered a normal multiplayer game, arma 3 can host 80-100 man servers, not an mmo.

but elite takes place in a shared universe where you can potentially meet a massive number of players, so in some respect it IS an mmo, but it isn't an mmo that is breaking any grounds on the amount of players per area. I mean wow was my first mmo, seeing 100s of player lining up in the barrens back in 05 for those pre-honor clusterfks, that felt massive, the massive was almost tangible. the massive for elite is kinda hidden. but it is there.

what you consider to be a true mmo may not be the same for everyone. this topic already happened though, basically so long as a massive number of ppl are able to potentially interact then the game is an mmo so basically every game with a multiplayer component made in the last 10 years is an mmo.

I told her what it was like to be a human being on the internet, the difference between you and myself is: I openly accept that sexism, misogyny, and misandry exist in the world. You seem to believe it only exists for one group of people. I was simply pointing out she was having a human experience rather than primarily a female one. I require empirical data before I make brash generalizations about a group of people or a place. For instance, I realize that "fedora shaming" which is what you are participating in is actually a studied phenomenon. If she had said sexual harassment I would have been inclined to agree with her, however she simply said harassment, funnily enough you have proven my point by making a harassing statement towards me. If I am being harassed I must be a woman right?

Just for the record before this gets blown out of proportion I am one of the 3 ALLY teachers on my campus. I know a thing or two about discrimination and harassment. I also know a thing or two about making broad general statements based on your (cis)gender or orientation. What I said wasn't sexist it was a fact. If you're on the internet you better expect to be harassed regardless of your (cis)gender.

BOT - I still think we should be given the option to have a steam key.

Yeah, more people are upset about this.

There's no way are you real.

So it's all three but not necessarily all at the same time. Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

As no one has given me a reason why a steam key is necessary to their game play experience I must conclude this thread is pointless and a waste of bandwidth. Why are people so wound up about something that is completely pointless and irrelevant? I can only conclude it is because there is nothing else to moan about today.

TL;DR Gets wound up and creates a pointless irellevent post about pointless irellevent posts in a pointless irrelevant thread, seems legit.

:D

In one word quiet easy . . .

My personal disappointment with FD isn't that I don't have a Steam key, it's that, once again, they've released a half baked ED Steam version to the biggest PC gamer market on the planet without consideration for existing customers or fully taking advantage of all the Steam features. Both existing customers and new Steam customers are getting a bare minimum service. Both customers and FD would have been better served if FD would have waited and released a fully integrated Steam version along with keys for existing customers.

Here's an analogy: Your child is playing in their first school musical instrument concert with the shiny new trumpet you payed a lot of money for them to play. During the concert your child doesn't pay attention and half heartedly attempts to play. When you ask them why the poor performance their reply is "Well I showed up, I'll look into actually giving a crap in the future". It's not about the cost of the trumpet or the concert, it's about the child half assing the attempt and not giving enough of a crap. Sure, you still love the child but, you won't be buying any shiny new instruments anytime soon or attending any concerts. Obviously the child didn't really want to go to the concert and did the absolute minimum required to get credit for showing up.

This is how I'd explain my personal disappointment with FD.

Dear FD, if you're going to do something do it right and complete, not another half baked rerun of the game release in December. You'd think someone at FD would have learned that lesson already.
