Elite Dangerous now on Steam

I cant believe they didn't react to this in any way yet. This is sheer incompetence on the companys part, if they had a community manager or a marketing team that is worth a cent this whole disaster would not have happened.

Man up Frontier Developments and tell the people that they wont get keys so you can earn the status as the evil company you are. Or stop being shady and deliver the keys to the people who made the game possible in the first place.

Releasing the game on steam and then not being available for 4 days for customer requests when you MUST HAVE KNOWN this would happen is unbelievable stupid, ....or calculated. I doubt the people who made this game are stupid, so it must have been planned to cash in on the Easter holidays and those who are frustrated with the situation and buy the game again.

This is shady business as i would expect it from a garage developer who sells his Gamemaker studio game after he got greenlit by giving out free keys for votes, not business from a company your size who makes a game of this scope.

Call in your decision makers to solve this mess, i don't care if its a holiday or not, you made a steam release, you don't release a game on steam and then be unavailable, thats not how you make a proper release.

And in case this was not a calculated thing, you better fire the ones responsible for this shady and poorly thought through steam launch without announcement anywhere, not even in the newsletter you sent out on the same day.

You should have worked with your community ahead of this launch, giving steam keys to your Kickstarter backers first in form of a early launch phase to test the steam features and integration, then you should have launched on steam proper and gave everyone who bought it before, the option to request a steam key if they want that. Thats how you involve your community, and everyone would be happy and excited and only have goodwill for you and your game.

But no, you decided its easier to cash in on a Easter weekend and pull off this embarrassing bad publicity earning surprise launch without announcement or support in any way or form. It really shows the face of the company we have to deal with here.

---------------------------------------------------------

It is sad to see the reactions of the people in this forum, this community is full of people who for some reason hate steam and who attack anyone who has the audacity to speak up and say that he is not happy with the game or that he wants the game he has already bought on steam.

Some of your Veteran members also make hunts for "steam kiddies" and kill any new players who spawn and continue to kill them to make the game unenjoyable for them. Its not hard to find proof for how toxic these forums are. Many of the people here seem to be locked into a "Us vs. Them" thinking and that they are superior and the only ones able to understand and appreciate THEIR game. Its truly sad reading those things and i can not understand such behavior.

They should be happy that the game gets new players and that it is selling well. You would think if they love the game so much they would be wanting it to succeed? Yet they harass and attack new players just because they bought the game on steam.

At least some of your players seem to have good intentions, a few came over to the steam forum to help new players and others would like to write guides to help steam players to get in the game, thats nice but it seems to be the exception sadly.

Jeez calm down mate. How old are you? 10? One of the most ridiculous posts I've ever had the misfortune to read.

Many of you probably already know but I was mildly surprised. Nice development for Frontier and the longevity of the game. I wonder if they got a special deal from valve to do this.

Excellent !

A moderator finally contacted me in private to give me a steam key !

Thanks Frontier !

You sir are of the purest evil!!! :D

I would love a steam key, but as they have stated "Looking in to it" I am happy to wait and see, also though.. I can still play regardless... so the potential is to gain something but lose nothing.. Why give up the game for those odds?

If I don't get a steam key? I can still play so no biggie.

There's already a massive tantrum thread demanding steam keys for people who didn't buy the game through steam, its not worth reading. In brief FD are looking into steam keys for all but they are being drowned out by screaming children.

So has anyone had a good reason why we shouldn't be able to activate E:D on Steam? All I see is people with reasonable opinions on why it would be great and a bunch of crybabies saying that we who like Steam shouldn't be able to use it because they don't like it. Seems very one-sided.

All but two of my games are on steam, Elite being one. I really want a key for steam and very disappointed if they don't at least try and support the original backers with them. Had I known steam was in the cards but not available to early access I would have never paid the early money and waited.

Seems like they released before the holiday so that they wouldn't be forced to deal with the initial rush of Chicken Little-ism that resulted, nor the various (un)foreseeable gripes.

All those assigning malicious motives to their silence - or indeed any motivation beyond "it's a holiday" - should probably think about getting a grip, and perhaps, a life.

Yes - on the one hand you've got those people who don't have an irrational desire to give Gabe Newell more money to control access to the games they paid for, and on the other hand you've got a bunch of crybabies expecting to get something for free.

What exactly is the point of being anti-Steam-keys here on the forum? Maybe you don't want one personally, fine, just ignore the inevitable email containing your key when it arrives. But why try to talk down everyone else who does want a key? Why will that hurt you? It's FD's decision, whether you like Steam yourself or not won't make any difference to that decision. It's simply bizarre to take a contrary stance, unless it's to somehow seem more white knight pro-FD-supportive?

It was an obvious sarcastic response to the quoted post, but carry on with your tirade if it makes you feel better.

Just baffled why you're even bothering to post here if you're anti-Steam. It's on Steam, I really don't see the issue with giving out keys should FD choose to do so. Why are you keen on trying to argue against them doing so? It won't hurt anyone who chooses not to use their key.

?? we've only asked if it is feasible to migrate our existing accounts on to Steam - yes there are some nutters demanding extra keys and the blood of the first born child of every Frontier employee - but then again there are some Jihadist anti-steamers too.

People calling others crybabies others questioning their spelling abilities and mental state. I'm going to play streaming games on the Children's Network site - may be a tad more mature.

I'm not quite sure I'm following, but I don't see why the only argument against steam keys is to give Gabe Newell money if it means more sales and publicity for Elite. If they made a single sale on Steam because they didn't want to buy it on the site or if they hadn't heard of the game that's a win. If Frontier managed to give us Steam activations that would mean a lot more publicity and good reviews from people who actually played the game for more than one hour. The current state of reviews is very unfair.

I hope I didn't misinterpret your post, and if I did please correct me.

Also there's good reason to do launch before Easter as lot of people have free time to actually check out the game. Marketing wise it seems to be done right - sales are going up and visibility are certainly increased multiple times.

They could've chosen to just release it on Steam and given us nothing to complain about by either having the keys ready, or making sure we had a statement more useful than "We're looking into it".

Poor planning and/or gross negligence got this thread where it is today, whether it was malicious or not isn't actually relevant to the discussion.

They seem to have a rhythm with launches stuff, be that content or like his. They have a tight marketing team driving all this I think.

Snark doesn't work in written form, unless you have exceptional literary skills or can somehow provide the deadpan facial expression to go along with it. And no, emoticons won't cut it. :p
