Elite Dangerous now on Steam

There was no 180. You'd know that if you ever backed anything on Kickstarter.

I've backed over 3 dozen projects myself. EVERY SINGLE ONE has come out on Steam.

Planetary Annihilation
Stonehearth
Pillars of Eternity
FTL
DwarfCorp
War for the Overworld
Wasteland 2
Warmachine: Tactics
Shroud of the Avatar
ROAM
Sui Generis
TUG
Raius
GODUS
Maia
Dead State
The Banner Saga

And countless more.

EVERY SINGLE ONE has come out on Steam.

Except Elite: Dangerous. Why?

Is it because EVERY SINGLE OTHER developer out there are anti-consumer swine and Frontier is the lone beacon of virtue out of EVERY SINGLE OTHER developer? Ha, nice try cupcake.

I'm mad because Frontier is one developer out of dozens that I've backed who decided they don't give a <snip> about their consumers and decided to force PC gamers to play in an environment that's divorced from their library, their games, and their friends.

It is scum bag move by a scum bag company.

Very clearly there are a LOT of people that are with you. Unless you are arguing with the developers themselves, is this really a forum fight worth having? Just because a few people don't understand, or are just sorry folks that want to in your cheerios, doesn't mean a yelling match is necessary. Just like everyone else here with a level head has said, give it time. Until then it would do your blood pressure well to ignore this thread.

[h=1]Hi,

I found this little info in the FAQ, so lets faq them and do as they say,

"For any feedback on this please let us know on our forums here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/"[/h]In short they don't seem to get it if we don't tell them so why not all repost so we can be sure they know?

[h=1]Frequently Asked Questions[/h]All Categories» Steam Support
I own Elite: Dangerous already, do I get a Steam code for it?

We are investigating the possibility of doing this but this is all the information I have at this time. However the version of Elite: Dangerous on Steam is functionally identical to the non-Steam version.

See Executive Producer Mike Brookes' comment on this: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133500&page=12&p=2044405#post2044405

You can easily add your existing Elite: Dangerous install to your Steam library and use Steam overlay in Elite: Dangerous to get any Steam functionality. To do this, click Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library and add EDLaunch.exe, ordinarily located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\ on a PC.

For any feedback on this please let us know on our forums here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/

When I backed this game I never thought it would be on Steam - But I backed it...

I thought FD were against Steam - they have their own launcher after all.

We all paid for this game when we bought it and (the vast majority of us) were happy with the purchase - what makes us entitled to a Steam key now? - If it's a 'no cost' option for FD then fine... - If it takes resources that could be spent improving the game then I say no. If it costs FD money for a Steam key then those that want it should pay, If not, then FD will probably give them out to all players.

My 2p

It. Costs. FD. Not. A. Single. Dime.

I'm mad (and so are countless other people, including the gaming press) because Frontier is the ONE EXCEPTION that decided they don't give a <snip> about their consumers and decided to force backers to hand over an extra $60 if they wanted the "privilege" to play in their Steam environment with their library, their games, and their friends. $60 for something that EVERY SINGLE OTHER developer did for free.

This isn't really fair at this point. Yes, it is really unprofessional of FD to put this on Steam and then go 'lol - dunno' when existing customers ask about their steam-key. But we don't know yet if they're planning on denying customers a key - and I would be really surprised if that turned out to be the case.

FDs mistake here (so far) is to have not put even a minimum of thought into this process and seemingly being completely clueless to even the most obvious of issues when putting the game on Steam. There is nothing indicating that they are planning on making existing customers pay for getting the game on steam yet.

Yes - give FD chance to respond - It IS a four day holiday in the UK right now...

Other than the administrative overhead of organizing it you mean?

It's not like the alternative doesn't come with a cost also - negative publicity, customer support for this issue and making a lot of your customers angry may not be as easily quantified, but it's a very real cost. And I'd be very surprised if it doesn't outweigh whatever they'd have to spend to distribute keys to existing customers. Especially considering they'll probably have to do so eventually anyway.

People should know that giving us a key for steam can be literally abused.
Frontier do have servers, but as of how the game is make right now, they have no idea who can use the key or not.
So what stop you from getting your steam key and give it to someone else ? And no, the login have nothing to do with it, Frontier can not make the difference between your account and a new one created.

I could just give my key to my friend, let him use an and create his own email to login, neither Frontier nor Steam can verify this key is specially activated for you.
You mention a long like of game from kickstarters, and this is exactly what happened, a lot of keys was handed out and there was not as much sale as planned from this.

The dev will eventually find a solution, but whining, complaining, and acting like 9 years old on a CoD argument won't change anything but give you a bad reputation and annoy the moderators who have to read all through your complains.

Steam will not change anything, there is no friend connect feature or anything but a DRM launcher, yet you can still create a shortcut. It only prevent you from writing reviews and nothing else, absolutely nothing but having to run steam instead of the frontier client directly. And maybe the useless data about how many hours you played that game.

As for the mention I read earlier about "I am punished, i have to use a no name knew as frontier rather that steam" not only you complain when there is still no final says ont he situation, but you also show no respect to the dev who work on this game that you seem to bash a lot. If you don't like it, then dammit we heard you, just leave now instead of trolling, because is nothing else, your complain won't make the dev want to give you a steam key.

I have to say, I am really disappointed by a lot of you in this topic, just say "I agree - I want one myself" or just disagree "this is a bad idea, you have my vote down", end of story. Make it easier for the staff to get a proper feedback and it save them time to go through your whole kindergarten blabling.

As for the choice to change their mind and go on steam, you have to remember that money doesn't grow on trees, and the more the dev have funds, the more they can devote time in new features, especially the one that will come in less than 3 weeks. Still updating with possible walk into your ship an on planet.
Yes a lot of idea from the kickstarter changed and then what ? That your own fault as you knew the risk of what an early access is. "game subject to change" remember that.

No happy with this choice ? how you make a proper civilized criticism like a proper adult.
That all folks, I am out.

They dont one mind that when they are charging for it... And since they will get a smaller cut for the steam sales, they already in fact has charged us for that since we paid full or a lot of persons paid 100-300% extra if you count the price on steam today.

Yes - give FD chance to respond - It IS a four day holiday in the UK right now...

And you are telling us this since it was a surprise for FD that it is? Don't you think that this is planned to be released now and that they are very well aware of the holiday and this controversy that it started? I think they are hiding under cover of the holiday and hope that everyone forgiven them on Tuesday... If they wanted this solved they could had taken the 2 minutes and answered that "yes you will get it and we are sorry we forgot about the users that already has paided for the game and supported us so there is a game at all...". I'm not hopeful since there has been no goodwill shown by them so far...

No - I'm sure the Steam release wasn't a suprise for FD, I think they released it on Steam when they were ready.

I think what will be a suprise for FD is the amount of upset that has resulted from this. Releasing this game on Steam IN NO WAY affects you playing the game, - you were happy to buy the game (not on steam) and the game has not changed.

I honestly don't understand why people are upset about this, - probably because I only use Steam rarely - when I can't avoid it. - I may be missing something here - I don't see any benefits from Steam personally.

Best thing to do IMHO is to chill for a bit, Let FD enjoy their Easter break and wait for a response.

Whaaaaaaat? How much of that money going into administrative overhead came from the gamers who wanted Elite: Dangerous to see the light of day? Surely those in charge wouldn't give it a second thought to give back to said community right? RIIIIIGHT? ;)

i don't want to sound overly harsh or pretend im a huge mega money backer but i just cant help thinking this is inconvenient at best ok sure id love a steam key
but i realy dont think the lack of one is due to any for of disrespect to the user base (and believe me ive seen plenty of that from other devs)
i mean there are some meltdowns on steam some 15 yr old girls would be amazed at

i mean im not saying im a huge backer and i don't want to be harsh to some people
but some of the meltdowns im reading on steam are hilarious
