Elite Dangerous now on Steam

I'm guessing that the problem with giving us steam keys is that quite a lot of us have already pre-purchased DLC through alpha/beta. Steam has not received its cut of this money, so it would be loathe to provide downloads of it for free.

I do not know why you guys want a steam key so fast ;) Relax.
There is no other profit to have game on steam. You can bind ED launcher to steam now and effect will be the same. This is the same game.

I am not asking for new steam ED version ... I want my game being put into my main game library. Not for new content, achievements but simply to use it like sinbad78 said.

Why? So you have Steam checking if you own the game before the FD launcher checks if you really own the game? Or because of Steam Achievements?
There's really no benefit to having a steam key for Elite. None. In fact, you can play the game without even starting the steam launcher. I'd see that as a plus.

thats not the only reason why people want a steam key

steam is now at the point in witch you just want all your games on that platform because its easy to browse through all your games and play them... its a gaming HUB for all your one stop needs. games / mods / guides / reviews etc etc and even a recent feed of what your friends are up to

adding a non steam game is not the same also the overlay problem does not work for most including me. and i done all the steps right from many reddit posts and threads on the forums...

i especially want a steam key just because ease of use and i dont want the hassle of constantly alt tabbing to chat to people on my steam friends list

+ 1 for a steam key from me too. It would really be excellent news for all existing players and backers of this project.

1. I would love to have and show Elite in my Library
2. I can make a review sharing my feelings for this wonderful game with the rest of the Steam community.
3. I can play together with friends using the steam overlay and use my friend/now playing/player chart lists to promote the game.

I definetely would like to add my game to steam library aswell! :) That would be absolutely awesome! Iam Steam heavy addicted... and the library there is like holy place for me :D

I would rather use a steam key than the current launcher. I would also prefer if all my friends did as well so I can see when they are playing!

Also make sure there is a huge bold ONLINE ONLY disclaimer so we dont have a round 2 of that whole debacle which many of us are still :D:D:D:D:D:D about.

I would greatly appreciate Steam Keys for a couple of reasons.

Firstly the ability to review the game, at time of writing I can see 1 review on Steam the details of which are not publicly visible, that's all there is.

Secondly the easy access to things like the guides and community through the Overlay, as it stands using the non-Steam game method I have to go search for such things, which can be time consuming.

Thirdly (and finally for the moment) minor things like hours played, official artwork etc.

I listed reviews first because that's the most important thing for me. I want to be able to help get the word out that this game is good, that this kind of game can be worth making, the shapes and lines of an early Elite game on a BBC Micro when I was too young to really understand what I was looking at are burned into my brain and every time I do anything in E:D it fills me with simple joy.

I don't know what issues there are on the backend for you, I don't know what costs there may be. If you communicate those things with us then I will likely be satisfied no matter the result, but I wanted to add my opinion on the matter for your consideration.

TLDR: Steam keys yes please.

I don't think anybody necessarily wanted it yesterday, they just wanted to know if they planned on supporting it, because they're excited about the game, and they're excited by Steam. The first couple of posts from Frontier could've been a lot more succinct on that, but in the end all that matters is that they're looking into providing it, and as long as it's not an empty promise, I think most people won't have an issue waiting.

I do still have the reservation because even their confirmation seems very PR-like, i.e. it's still a non-answer that allows them to fall back to "Well we never promised anything".

If we can't give feedback on Steam without a key for the game isn't it just common sense to give us a Steam key? I don't have any other reason in wanting one other than to give a review of the game on Steam. As many have said it won't directly make the game better. But over the longer term with our good reviews it might bring a larger user base to the game and so mean more cash in FDev coffers some of which will be used to improve their product.

Frankly, if you don't want one don't take one. It's important to many people; if you're not among them then it doesn't affect you.

Not true. Again, valve just issues the keys for purchases made en masse for things like KS backing. They generally tell the publisher or the dev to pick up *more* than they need just in case they have issues or want to hand some out for PR purposes. This would also include setting up stuff like season passes and the like for reward tier backers beforehand, Now there IS perhaps a discussion that valve might have about the idea of season passes being issued and no longer being for sale, but if Frontier are putting expansions up on Steam, that usually placates them. Valve are usually pretty willing to work -with- developers in solving these sorts of issues, unlike say, Apple, who are an absolute nightmare in this regard.

WTH DEVELOPERS!

I backed your game on Kickstarter, hoping for it to come to Steam.
Held off on playing till now, hoping for it to come to Steam.

Now my hopes finally come true.

AND YOU WONT GIVE ME A KEY even tough i made your game possible in the first place through my funding? ːangrytitanːːangrytitanːːangrytitanː

I tell you what Developers.
I WILL NEVER PLAY YOUR GAME, if you dont provide Steam Keys.
Screw you, i wish i never had backed you.

First that lying trickery with no online required and you make it an online only game!
And now you screw your Backers additionally by not providing Steam Keys.

I will never purchase anything from you again or support anything you do!

Understood - it's something we are looking into.

Michael

I saw this after writing my post since this was made while writing mine. Thank you Michael. I'll sit back and return to hunting space criminals and wait for news. I'm happy with it at least being considered and looked into :)

you realized that many other big companys that where stand alone before moving to stream gave all their existent customers steam keys right ?

steam i doubt is all about milking profit from one game witch the most likely get from a couple of game sales on their platform.. besides they will still get money either way. cause its ED has been opened to a new platform in witch it has millions of potential users ready to buy!

No problem - you want it - OK - Michael said they working on this.
And it is enough. It will be soon and there is no reason to talk more about that ;)

How would the devs ensure that people don't give steam keys away? They would presumably have to be linked to our ED accounts? Sorry if this is a stupid point, I've never got a Steam key for a game I bought elsewhere before so I don't really know how it works. I just get most of my games through Steam as it's really convenient - especially on a new install and they have awesome sales :D

Just adding my +1 for Steam keys for existing players. It'd be nice to have this game included with the rest of my 300+ games on Steam, to have automatic patching, to have a playtime tracker, and to take advantage of any achievements/trading cards if they become a thing. It could also make playing with friends easier if FD integrates with Steamworks fully.

<self-moderatedly removed flames, you're welcome mods>

Steam keys would make sense for those that already own the game. It would be good for FD's customers to have the choice. Though the level of doom and gloom and shame being launched at FDev is really ludicrous.

There are other things to focus on that would add so much more to the game rather than, trading cards, patch distribution, chatting with meatbag friends, and keeping stats.

If FD were to expedite distributing keys to current players, I would hope it is for the primary purpose of alleviating long update times.
