Elite Dangerous now on Steam

The overlay works as does the screenshot thing using "add non steam game to library" function. I've had it like this since day 0 as I only have 1 monitor and it was easier and safer when travelling many times the speed of light to just use the steam browser for trade info than it was to alt/tab.

So that leaves, auto sync of friends and broadcasting/streaming that do not work without official integration.

If it does nerf the ability to use steam VR then I'll be disappointed with having to re-buy the game just for this.

Screenshots and streaming will not show in public hub because it's a no-steam game.
They MUST give us key and they MUST do it immediatly.

Screenshots you can do via attaching any game to Steam. However, I believe he's right in that you can't stream the game unless you own it on Steam. Unless you launch a Steam game and then have it capture Elite instead I suppose... but that's Jerry rigging it.

Apparantly yes, you can.

Honestly, I completely fail to see what the big deal is with ED on Steam. It wouldn't add even a 1% improvement to the game as far as I can tell.

I've added E: D to my Steam library as a "non-steam" game. I can now:
- launch within Steam; and
- stream it to my HTPC (which is running Steam on Ubuntu)

I think getting a Steam key will just allow write access to the community features Steam provides for each game. i.e. reviews, broadcast, screenshots/video, forum, guides etc. As well as advertise to your Steam friends when and how often you play.

You really don't want to know :)

So, Frontier does "do wheelspin acceleration away with our cash", then... ;)

But seriously, can't care less about the Steam key (although why Frontier wouldn't want the people who were interested enough in the game to kickstart it to be able to review it on the world's largest game marketplace is beyond my - admittedly limited - understanding), but I just popped up to say to all affected people we told you so.

I'm really sorry, but we warned you, back in the old days, back in the offline threadnaught(s). We told you you would be next.

Well, now you are. Welcome to the club; it's not a very happy place.

Or, as the saying goes, all of this has happened before, and will happen again (at least until the servers go down, and the game dies, and is forgotten). :(

As a former game dev, surely you would agree this is something which should have been addressed before release on Steam? We've no real option but to wait, and watch this pot boil.

Lol, surely if ED has taught its players anything, its to be patient, wether cruising across a system, exploring or working a rare trade run, we should all be used to stuff taking time.

As a former game dev, let me tell you, addressing an issue like this is not something you want them to do with a quick seat of the pants decision. Things need considering to keep it all fair. How do they implement keys, should they even do so, and how do they approach those existing players that couldnt wait for a key and decided to buy one (eg do they refund purchases, give them an option for a refund or let them have 2 accounts if they prefer, etc.)

Then once the decisions have been fully discussed, weighed and made, they need to figure out the most effective way, and timescale, to present their decision to the player base in as non-flamatory way as possibly, as its a very volatile subject, as the huge number of posts here serves to demonstrate.

Be patient. Fdev arent stupid, they know the issue needs adressing one way or another, so lets give them the time they need to address it, as effectively and as well thought out and planned for as they can.

Personnally speaking, I really don't expect to hear anything before the newsletter on friday, where a broad spectrum newsletter blast would reach far more users than a quick forum post.

Oh dear. Using up the special offline sadface "I told you so" on this? lol

The money was worth more than the fallout. This will no doubt get addressed eventually, but at the expense of some good will in the short term!
50k sold copies says they were right to do so. There was chance and they took it. More money for development without selling ships - anyone against that is stupid.

I'd love to see the people who want steam keys also point out WHY they really really want one despite not having bought one.

So far, only very few people (around 5, give or take a couple) have managed to specify why they would want a Steam key with actual reasons. The streaming bit is one such reason, the counting of total hours played in your Steam stats is another. Doesn't matter whether I think it's a miniscule benefit, at least it's there and the people who want this know what they want.

The rest is 188 pages is people who don't know how Steam works ("I need that key to get the overlay to work!"), or who have either unrealistic expectations ("It will get Workshop integration!!").
