Elite Dangerous now on Steam

I'd love to see the people who want steam keys also point out WHY they really really want one despite not having bought one.

So far, only very few people (around 5, give or take a couple) have managed to specify why they would want a Steam key with actual reasons. The streaming bit is one such reason, the counting of total hours played in your Steam stats is another. Doesn't matter whether I think it's a miniscule benefit, at least it's there and the people who want this know what they want.

The rest is 188 pages is people who don't know how Steam works ("I need that key to get the overlay to work!"), or who have either unrealistic expectations ("It will get Workshop integration!!").

For me personally steam just feels better. I like to have my games in one place (207 games on steam) and trying to stick whit that, and all this features that steam have (community hub, hours counting, etc) they are maybe small but if you have chose to "have it" or "not have it" what you will chose?

I would very much like a steam key for this game. Its nice to be able to have a single stop shop for all your games and steam is an incredible platform. It would be remiss if Frontier Developments did not offer steam keys to those who backed the game and bought into any stage of beta at the very least.

  • It doesn't cost Frontier anything (it's in Valve's best interests to have as many players on Steam as possible, so key generation is free for developers, and counts as free advertising for Valve).
  • It lets the people who funded the game, who know how it works, and who generally will probably like it more that people who didn't go to the trouble of finding out about it and spending their money on it post reviews (which will probably be more informed, and have better ratings, than those written by people who have just found out about the game and started playing it), screenshots, artwork, and streams to the game's community hub, without having to buy a second copy of the game. Some of those players would probably also hang around the hub helping new and potential players, and giving a better image to the game, also driving up sales.
  • It shows more players owning the game and currently playing it (currently it only shows people who bought it on Steam, who are a minority), thus driving up sales ("there are a lot of people playing it, maybe I should try it...").
  • It would have prevented the division amongst the community that not having keys has caused (too late for that!), thus avoiding the bad image that this discussion is giving the game (and loss of trust in Frontier amongst some of the backers and pre-Steam owners who hadn't lost it due to previous questionable actions by Frontier).
You'll probably note that most if not all of those points would have benefitted more Frontier than the players (although in theory economic benefit for Frontier should allow them to improve the game, and indirectly benefit players), so I must add a last point:

  • It would have prevented (again, too late for that) backers and pre-Steam owners from looking like dopes by supporting a company that acts in such an... irrational and self-destructive way.
I don't know, seems like more than enough reasons to me (although, as I said, I don't care about having or not having a key; it'd be nice to have the game in my library, but I can make do without it as I've been doing till now). *shrug*

Don't forget probably about half of those pages are filled with what seem to be trolls and/or steam haters putting down people for even asking for a key and asking the same questions over and over again because they can't seem to fathom why people would want their game on Steam, even after people keep listing their personal reasons. (this is entirely ignoring the bulk of the people here who's intent is simply to put their support behind getting a Steam key. It's not like there's 188 pages of people here who's sole purpose is to answer your questions)

I'll add another one to the list if you want though. Easy library management. Over the years my Steam library has grown to the point where it's the main and first place I go to if I'm looking to play a game. To the point that if a game I own isn't on that list, I pretty much don't think about that title anymore, and tend to find something else to play before even getting to the point where I'd have to think of what other titles I still have 'lying about' the rest of my internet purchases. So while 'add a non-steam game' is fine and all, once uninstalled, it's gone from that library, which is annoying. And even if I think about playing it again it'll require me looking up the game, remembering where I bought it and where to download it again to install it rather than clicking on the game in the library.

It's a ton of little conveniences like that which add up to what many people consider a better experience.

I think it's completely fair if I don't get a key, and a lovely gesture if I do. However, I want a steam key so I can craft an Elite badge for my Steam account (these might not exist yet, but they will) and put Elite in it's "FAVORITE GAME" display case.

But it's ok if none of that happens. No-one ever looks at my steam profile anyway :)

TL;DR: The current state of affairs means that my Steam "fav game" display is a lie. So... serious stuff! :) By not giving me a key, FD is making me a liar. That's on them. They've got to live with that. They have to be able to sleep at night knowing that some random guy on internet doesn't have their game displayed on his profile (which no-one visits). :D

I'm hoping Alpha and possibly Beta backers get a steam key.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

That would probably cause even more problems (and I say this as an alpha backer).

Either all pre-Steam owners get a key (which, as I said in a previous post, would be the reasonable thing to do), or none of us should, in my opinion.

No need to divide the community even more, despite how much it would fit with Frontier's modus operandi.

The same reason people used to keep all of their physical games together on a shelf. There's a collector aspect to gaming.

Exactly. Some people just feel pretty strongly about keeping things tidy and organized. Anyways, I'm starting to see more posts of people lacking an understanding of why people feel as strongly about getting Elite on Steam as they do. Apparently, these people have just not been reading back beyond a page or so. Plenty of people (myself included) go on to explain why we feel it's desirable.

I've added E: D to my Steam library as a "non-steam" game. I can now:
- launch within Steam; and
- stream it to my HTPC (which is running Steam on Ubuntu)

I think getting a Steam key will just allow write access to the community features Steam provides for each game. i.e. reviews, broadcast, screenshots/video, forum, guides etc. As well as advertise to your Steam friends when and how often you play.

This is not true. Streaming works ok if you are using mouse/keyboard. If you are using HOTAS or other controller game doesn't recognize it while other Steam games doesn't have problems with it. I tried my HOTAS, I tried with Thrustmaster T-Flight Stick X and ordinary Logitech controller which I'm using for my NBA2k15 streaming. It doesn't work. Mouse / keyboard only. You want a prove.... i can make video if you want.

are you saying that steam streaming wont work if you are playing elite with a hotas..... thats wrong cause i have an x55 and i use steam streaming every time i play. I also have added Elite as a non steam game and it works fine. the only problem with this in relation to streaming is that your stream doesnt get listed in the games community hub streams. so no random people will find and watch unless they go directly to your profile and click watch, but it does work other than that.

i would like a steam key so that i can upload screenshots and have them appear in the community hub so people can see them, same goes for videos, and streaming, and any other content related.
-track my gametime
- also so i can make a review on the game in steam. this alone i would think would be worth it for the devs to give out steam keys. even if 1/4 of the people giving keys do a review in steam and make it honest review it would surely boost the games rating and attract more people to the game.

I tested myself today since RedMcG wrote that in-house streaming is working. I took my laptop, connect HOTAS and it didn't work. With all other games as Flight Sim X etc i don't have problems. Also as i wrote, Thrustmaster stick didn't work and Logitech gamepad neither.

so, still a "no."
I'll no longer support frontier in DLC or future games, if this is how you treat people who backed you up you dont deserve support.

I asked to refund my game in order to buy in on steam and got an answer that I should "add it as non-steam game". ok frontier.

The current answer is "we're looking into it" not "no".

There has not been a "yes" or a "no" as yet. You should at least wait for a definitive answer before throwing the rest of your toys out of your pram.

I want Elite to be managed by Steam because I install and uninstall games quite frequently. I play one for awhile, then uninstall it, then I reinstall it sometime later. I use a 500GB SSD for my main drive, and all my games get installed on it. I really don't want to fill it up with games that I don't play, so I uninstall the games I'm burnt out on. Now that I'm burnt out on Elite, it seems very appealing to uninstall it, wait for some more updates to come out, and maybe reinstall it in 6 month's time. The problem with doing that with these standalone games is that each one either has an install disk or a set of online credentials that you have to keep track of. If everything is done via Steam, only one set of credentials is required...ever. There are people that literally have hundreds of games they have purchased through Steam. Imagine trying to keep track of all those license keys or account login credentials for installers like Elite: Dangerous has. No thanks. FD needs to fix this and work with Steam to give all the pre-Steam customers the ability to manage Elite: Dangerous through Steam. It's not rocket science, and the mechanism for this already exist. It's just a matter of FD working with Valve to make it happen. They put in plenty of effort to get it marketed through Steam. They can put forth a little more to provide us with the ability to migrate our game to Steam.

Call me crazy, but I'd rather not have to run steam just to launch the ED launcher to then launch the game. Plus, your Steam account can be locked down and your games "disappear" at any time for a multitude of reasons. And in general, I don't like having a chain of dependencies to be able to run a game. The ED launcher is enough for me personally. I don't care to have other see that I have played 190 hours so far.

And again, adding a shortcut to the non-steam version of ED in steam makes it look exactly like a steam game. You then have it "all in one place" too.
