Elite Dangerous now on Steam

Why are all the people who are "against" Steam, being obstructive to the idea to those who like and use Steam getting a Steam key?

If you do not use it, your interpretation of the "worth" of the platform will of course be much less.

I can't speak for other but I'm not against a steam key.
I'm against the demanding tone of all people that say that they insist on having a key because they are entitled to it.
Not to mention those that insult and condemn FD purely for not getting their way (instantly).

How it this still an issue ?

It's not like a second key is being asked for, just the ability to activate a current key in steam ... it's not rocket science. Even worse, they haven't said it's off the table. Well played, leave you loyal customers in the dark.

With such a massive selection of games to play these days, it's amazing to see Devs basically shoot themselves in the foot on something so simple. If Frontier had of allowed activation of current keys via steam from the start, I highly doubt there would be this many posts against it, it wouldn't even be a topic. With other companies products it's standard practice, I was pretty amazed to see Frontier not offering this by default. I guess it's a nice way to bring a bunch of negative comments out in your playing community, again, well played.

If you're self-moderating the internet for 'tone' then it's going to be a long night. :)

The way I see it that there's probably a large intersection of Elite D players and Steam account holders. Those numbers being so large means that there will always be some that 'petulant it up' unnecessarily. It's like when people say 'all gamers are kids' or 'steam users are dumb' then really we're talking about a set of 125 million people, and you're probably only going to interact with the worse 1% of them.

Also, trying to logically argue with someone screaming 'MAA KEY MA, KEY nOW!1!' is going to have diminishing returns.

No one demands a key. We demand the game which we bought on page to be integrated with Steam. And that my friend is a HUGE difference. I know what you are doing. You are one of those few who are mixing crap just to smell better.

I appreciate that some people want a steam key. I have nothing against that as long as they do not spew toxic hate and "omg uninstalled" here.

"We demand the game which we bought on page to be integrated with Steam."

You make very little sense.

That you resort to insults is rather unfortunate.

Seeing that one man dev teams accomplish this EXACT task and do it as the right thing to do by their customers, for ED not to do it would be wrong.

I also think this game has MANY none "core" gamers who honestly have no idea of what Steam actually means to PC gamers (wrightly/wrongly) this day and age.

Am surprised nobody has said "But why would I want Steam, it slows my computer down".

The big question is, as "core gamers", why did not ED not foresee this and make preparations accordingly instead of acting surprised when the question is asked and causes such a response.

Steam doesn't add anything to ED itself, but it adds some nice others things.
That's why I said that the game is same from steam or non steam.
And that is also the reason that FD doesn't have to give steam keys, but it would be better if they will.
Everyone demanding a steam key is out of line cause they agreed to the term and conditions, which said nothing about a steam key.

just proud that after 5 days Elite is still battling for the top with GTA5 and has 6k logged on steam right now and an approximate of 25k sales to add on the 400k we already had.

And sadly the masses that use steam and have their heads hurt by thinking are attack Elite Dangerous on steam non stop. Think they need to have the forums there locked to only those who brought the game.

Since they said it would not be availble on steam, i think its safe to say they deceived us.
I for one would have waited for a steam launch. I like to have my games in one place, on a stable platform.

And then there are features that steam provides that i now dont have, for example the ability to stream this game directly to my friends via steam.
Being able to select a friend in the friend list and press watch is awesome. And it requires almost no additional cpu "power" to do that, unlike 3rd party stream programs.
As we all know these programs basicly requires you to double your computing power if you want to stream.

I can understand that they dont want to or are unable to transfer the keys to steam for free.
I and probably many others would gladly pay a small sum for the transfer.

I just dont want to buy a complete new copy of the game and grind all my credits from scratch again.

This. If I had known they were going to Steam, I would have definitely waited. Steam is the way to go. It will me no end if I have to pay to get a steam code.

I'm one of those that has no idea why a Steam key is such a huge issue. Of course, I don't have a steam account, I know roughly that it's some sort of platform for delivering and launching games, but that's about it.

What is the difference between clicking on the Steam client or the ED client?

I actually really want to know why this appears to be quite a big deal for the Steam folk.

ED is the only game I play (or have played for literally a decade) on PC. I've stuck to consoles mainly because of the constant need to upgrade for every new game these days, but I digress...

Who knows, the benefits may be enough that I'd get myself an account.

How about do some reading before asking same freaking question like 100 times?

Hey Zeeman - having an official Steam key will mean you get all those extra functions that Steam offers. So things like posting screenshots, broadcasting and sharing them with others on Steam. Writing reviews, getting automatic updates, writing a guide or review to share with friends or others. Its all part of the ecosystem on Steam and users do get used to having those features.

Its not anything in-game, its that social aspect around the game that many want. Also, for many its having all your games in the one place which for those with large collections is very handy to have and that is the main reason for me personally.

Not everyone uses these sort of features though, and then there are those that are just anti-steam who see it as DRM or whatever. Seems why there are such galvanised opinions on Steam in general.

At the end of the day I think its really a convenience thing.

Also ... hope some official response comes out soon. I am surprise nothing has been updated from Frontier yet!
