Elite Dangerous now on Steam

As with every game that ends being released on steam, we get 2 weeks of clueless nut-jobs, and then we go back to the original players.

But i guess those 2 weeks it's free money for FD, so why complain? Ohh right.. these 2 weeks :p

Geez, lots of ranting on here by people armed with little more than a few bits of info and coming to xyz conclusions.
Give FD and the rest of us a break please and calm down.

All those demanding a steam key as some sort of right because they backed the game. Really?

Anyone here actually have it through Steam? Does anybody actually know if the Steam integration does anything more than download the launcher and then leave everything else the same, i.e. the login, future updates etc. etc. all through the exact same launcher we're already using. i.e. adds nothing other than a launch link?

Let's hope things get straightened out quickly. The initial reviews appearing on Steam are not great and being taken as gospel. Getting a few of us in there will set things right.

I got a few pages into this thread and didn't see anyone mention the fact that handing out steam keys is essentially giving out free copies of the game and trusting that we'll re-register ourselves instead of trading them or gifting them to a mate.

I certainly wouldn't do it if I were in their position. We've bought the game, we can play the game just fine as it is. All the whinging about not getting a Steam version is completely unjustified.

Another example of FD money grabbing before they have all their ducks in a row. God I'm sick of FD's stupid decisions.

Come on FD, you didn't see the backlash for no Steam keys coming? Are you all really that damn stupid?

So far not a single damn thing FD has done has gone off without a hitch. There's always loose ends and things just undone hanging on to whatever they do that has to be cobbled together at a later date (usually months) to try and get it where it should have been BEFORE they released it. When will FD get their poop together and stop doing half crap like this?

They haven't refused to give steam keys to existing players the steam release was only announced today and we'll be updated in due course. More patience less tantrums.

If the backers don't get keys and most of the people posting on the steam forums are only newcomers then the forum will be a blood bath. Haha oh dear, I think I'll stay clear :)

You right, which is why FD should have figured out a way to tie both accounts together BEFORE they did this stupid half baked crap. Who the hell makes these decisions at FD? Whoever they are, fire them.

More planning, less stupid decisions. Real story? We decided to release it on Steam before we could tie accounts from purchasers on our store to accounts on Steam.

This is just stupid. Bad anyway you look at it. I don't personally particularly care to play it through Steam but, you just wait and see what kind of a mess this causes, that could have been averted if they had waited and planned better.

Why would steam allow a thousands of people who already bought the game elsewhere use thier services free of charge going forward, when they are taking a cut of every new player to purchases now..

I think the realistic factor is Steam's cut of the profits.. im sure FD's statement of "We are looking into it" is more of a reflection of "We heard the feedback, and will see if we can negotiate a cost effective deal with steam to provide keys to backers".. If steam is going to take 20 bucks from each copy, FD has no reason to do it.. if steam will work out a bulk cost of say a buck a copy for all backers in a lump payment to do it.. i dont see why FD wouldnt..

I'm all for FD launching on Steam. And I don't need a key anytime soon.

But, I was a little shaken by FD's apparent lack of anticipating the first question EVERY player is going to ask...

+1 for a steam key here. I've been using the "launch as a non-steam game" but having full integration would be much appreciated. Keep up the great work Frontier!

It's not Valve's decision. It's FD's.

FD can easily generate keys and make them available on our account page on their website.

It would be beneficial for existing players to get keys. We can then create guides on the community hub/ share videos etc.

I'd love a Steam key, and would pay a few dollars for the privilege if needed. Otherwise, I'll just buy it on the summer or winter sale. I'm already planning on getting it again on PS4, and I already have the expansion pass, so surely getting revenue from me can't be a hold up.

Since the game requires a sign-in, surely distributing keys(and ensuring they aren't resold/traded) isn't very difficult? I have no idea of how the specifics work but can't you just tie them to people's accounts? I understand it might not be the simplest thing, but given the vastly superior features that steam offers, to essentially force veteren supporters to use an inferior proprietary launcher is almost criminal.
Having a larger steam community would also do wonders for online play.
I'll be honest and say I would frankly be quite angry if there was no way to switch to steam.

Which is one. of many, reason to have waited until it was properly implemented. Why oh why does FD always shoot itself in the foot with everything they do?

Awesome to see it on Steam now! But pls, give us old Backers a free Steam Key, however that could work out.
