Elite Dangerous updates through Steam.

If you need proof take a look at the updated content files 1.027 from the last patch:

https://steamdb.info/app/359320/history/

Plus here's the official Steam FAQ from Frontier's staff - go look up the updates section:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/359320/discussions/0/611702631212800293/

Q. Will Elite: Dangerous auto-update through the Steam UI?
A. Elite: Dangerous can be updated automatically by Steam. It may also be updated via the game’s launcher.

Plus confirmation through the press too:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-04-02-surprise-elite-dangerous-is-now-on-steam

"Elite: Dangerous can be updated automatically by Steam as well as via the game's launcher. But DLC needs to be bought from the Elite: Dangerous web store. Beta versions won't be released on Steam, either."

> At least you'll be able to stop spreading misinformation..

:) A good effort though jim, 6/10.

PS If you need help setting up Steam so it works on your computer, let us know.
Yes, I've read Frontier's announcement that it would update through Steam. It's a shame you missed the bit where I said "while the initial announcement did say that Steam's auto-updating would be a feature of the Steam version". When you read Eurogamer's piece based on exactly that press release, you seem to have accidentally thought it was a separate source.

My source is: I have Elite: Dangerous on Steam. When I fired up the game a couple of weeks ago, I had to wait for Frontier's launcher to update the game. (Yes, I have double-checked that I have auto-updates enabled for E: D.)

I trust my first-hand information over your second-hand information parroted by someone who apparently does not even have the game on Steam.

I also installed it through steam the other day so I havent been able to confirm it either, but I did notice the launcher still "patched" the game on first launch by verifying the install, however nothing was downloaded.

So my only question is how long after the patch going "live" did you play the game? I suspect there may be some time delay between it going live on their servers and being then pushed to steam. The fact it didnt patch and was the most up to date version that d/l'd from steam makes me think this is more probable rather than it not patching at all. I'm with you on this issue being clouded by FUD and misinformation.

edit PS - Oh and i posted about it earlier but its obviously lost in the mess, but I purchased my 2nd copy (and some vulture skins) with funds from selling imaginary items on the steam market place that were of no use to me, but obviously desirable in the steam economy (another advantage of Steam for those playing at home) It's something i do almost every sale event, sell pixels, buy games.. its a nice system.

Well if that's the case I have no reason not to believe you.

Of course, I would verify this myself rather than 2nd hand, but I didn't want to buy another copy just for Steam (that seems a little over-zealous).

If I had a key I could find out! :)

PS How on *earth* did you wait until Frontier released on Steam? Is this a 2nd copy or did you just have better patience?

EDIT: For the steamdb link, it showed that the base content files held by Steam were updated the same day as the last patch came out, i.e. 1.2.07. This means that any new installs and patches might be at that version. What might not update is some config file to say what the latest version is, i.e. something the Frontier launcher needs to do. So what might be happening is Steam is updating some content, but the FD Launcher still needs to check and update the version config anyway. Dunno. Can't wait to find out ;)

It could also be that the update is pushed to Steam later, in which case the launcher could have updated before Steam does.

Nothing has changed. Giving out keys still has costs. It's still not 100% Frontier's decision. You're still going to have to wait. 12 days is still not several weeks.

It's coming up on a month since the release, and three weeks since "we're looking into it", not 12 days. If they didn't want to give a 30% cut to Valve they shouldn't have brought it to steam at all. Since you can buy things from the FD store with your steam wallet they're most of the way to an account sync already.

70% of what profit they would make off of existing customers doing all their purchases through steam is still preferable to those same customers not buying anything from the sour taste this has left in their mouth.

Wahhh Wahhh Wahhh. Enough already. When you bought the game you knew you were not getting a game with Steam Support. I bought the game a mere week before the Steam release and you don't see me moaning whining like a little spoiled brat.

You do realize if you were given a steam key, you could sell it to a third party and no one would know. So you want Elite to give you the ability to basically sell another copy of the game and get no profit from it.

If I bought a 2014 car without Park Assist, and tomorrow, they released a 2015 with Park Assist, am I entitled to Park Assist free? No.

You all claim that Steam Keys are free, but they are not. I do not own the game on Steam and yet I use a steam shortcut to launch it and get all the advantages of using steam without the ability to write a review on the game. Big freaking deal.

I think we all need to get a grip and stop acting like little children.

We got what we paid for. Be happy, explore the galaxy and stop asking for something you were never entitled to. You paid for a license for the game, you got a license for the game. You are not entitled to two.

Why do you feel entitled to this so much?

If you get one, you'll have something extra you didn't pay for. If not, you'll have what you paid for.

Wow, way to ignore everything that has been covered already.
  • Including the fact that many people would've held off if Frontier hadn't given the impression they had no plans to ever bring it to Steam.
  • Including that no one has said they want a key that would give them an additional account. (Given that Frontier must create accounts on their system for Steam users for them to be able to log in, it is no stretch to think they can't lock issued keys to the accounts they were issued to. You sell your key, someone else gets access to your existing account.)
  • Yes, Steam keys are free. It is standard policy that devs/publishers get an unlimited number of keys for free to do with whatever they want.
  • Including that just adding a shortcut to Steam does not get all the features, or near as good integration with the features that do work with added games.
  • Even including the poor applicability of car analogies.

Yeah, "we got what we paid for"; an application that, were it a car, would have had been factory recalled. (THAT is one of the major problems with using car analogies against any software by the way, not a dig at Elite or Frontier in particular.)

You should follow your own advice.

Why do you feel so strongly about defending anti-consumer attitudes and actions?

Anti consumer attitudes and actions? Get a grip. Just how were you ripped off? Are you going to demand some money back if tomorrow Frontier lowers the price of the game to $50.00? Anti consumer attitueds and actions, what a bleeping joke. You got exactly what you paid for. Just like the rest of us.

Including the fact that many people would've held off if Frontier hadn't given the impression they had no plans to ever bring it to Steam. That was not the impression I got. saying there currently are no plans and no plans EVER are two different things. When asked the question, Frontier said there "currently" are no plans to release on Steam. They NEVER said NEVER........AGAIN (Okay, bad movie pun) Anyhow, Releasing on Steam is a good thing, it brings in more players and helps pay for continued server support and continued updates. Your argument holds no water, because then Frontier would have NEVER been able to release it to Steam without someone getting their panties in a wad. As it was, the game was released for over 2 months before becoming available on Steam.
Including that no one has said they want a key that would give them an additional account. (Given that Frontier must create accounts on their system for Steam users for them to be able to log in, it is no stretch to think they can't lock issued keys to the accounts they were issued to. You sell your key, someone else gets access to your existing account.): Perhaps you forgot how you installed. I did not get the game binaries until I purchased the game. The binaries allow you to create the account. The Steam Key gives you access to the binaries. Now, perhaps they "could" lock it to an existing account, but then someone has to audit all the user accounts assign specific keys to them. That could take quite a bit of work for thousands of accounts. That employee won't do it for free. I don't work for free. Do you?
Yes, Steam keys are free. It is standard policy that devs/publishers get an unlimited number of keys for free to do with whatever they want: Read the previous point. Someone still would have to give the key, lock it to your account and perform work to ensure that the key is only used on pre-existing accounts. Again, the labor is not free. So while the key itself may be free, the work behind it is not. And you assume that Frontier should absorb that cost why?
Including that just adding a shortcut to Steam does not get all the features, or near as good integration with the features that do work with added games. two words...poor baby....buy a steam key and pay for the additional features.
Even including the poor applicability of car analogies. Ok, hows this one. I buy Doom 3. There are no plans to release it on Steam. I play the game. Months later they release it on Steam. Should I get a Steam key even though I never bought it through Steam? Funny thing. That happened to me. Except I understood that I was not entitled to the Steam Version of the game. Same thing happened when I bought Flight Simulator X and later found out there was a Steam version of that game released at a later time. Again...No one stepped up and gave me a Steam key for the DVD-ROM versions I already owned. So why do you deserve one? Because both games were released via direct download?!!?? I GLADLY repurchased those games in Steam just for the convenience of having them available on the cloud. The bottom line that you fail to comprehend is this: YOU DID NOT BUY A STEAM GAME!!!! If you want to buy it on Steam, feel free to do so, and I'll give you a thank you and hearty handshake for your continued support.

And BTW...I purchased the game through Frontier 1 week before it was released on Steam. So it's not as if I'm not in the same boat that you're in. It's just I bought the game knowing full well my version wasn't a Steam version and never expected anyone to give me a steam version if it later did become available for Steam.

Once there you can then tie your steam account to your Frontier purchase. This work was already done for the steam launch, so those users could purchase skins on the Frontier store. It's how they will assign steam keys without manually checking everyone, i.e. the Frontier shop knows what orders you have (like ED), and the 'sign into Steam' bit allows you to link them. That means no manual work by Frontier, plus no stolen keys. Easy :)

My manually added version of ED is now effectively unplayable as it doesn't launch properly under steam so I'm accessing it in PC desktop mode, which is fine now.

If I were to delete my ED launcher from my Steam interface and then purchase the game via Steam would I :

1) Be able to register a new second account which would be distinct and separate on Steam from my PC Desktop main kickstarter account?
2) Be able to run the game under Steam as either this new registration version and / or my original commander/ account?

1. When I bought game I already expected to get a Steam key if they ever release it on Steam, like it is with ALMOST every other games, so do not come to tell me what I did expect as you do not have a clue.
2. You do realize that there are other options than a pure key that you cannot sell even if wanted to (at least that easy), I am sure you figure it out if try really hard.
3. Using Steam as a shortcut for non-Steam game do NOT give you all advantages of using Steam, again go and do your homework in this subject! And when it comes how big the deal is, that's more like matter of view isn't it?

Now, in the beginning of your post you said 'enough already', if that was your truly opinion, then why are you in the thread anymore? I think that is a valid question.

Been following this for the past month on and off, is Frontier really just ignoring all this? How inept were they from the get go on this issue? There are 3000+ posts on the Steam forums as well, why won't they acknowledge?

This has really soured my experience with FD and their products. If not addressed, I will definitely not be a future customer. Fool me once....

Last communication was less than a week ago. Said there was no change from the previous situation which was (and I paraphrase) "We are aware of the demands, we are looking in to it, it is not a straight forward situation, it will take several weeks"

I've completely stopped playing ED. Partly because of the burnout from lack of content, but mostly because of the extremely sour taste that FD has left in my mouth over this Steam Key business. Whether they admit it or not, it's been around a month, and that is far and away plenty of time to get this sorted out and get Steam Keys to previous owners. Alas, if they want to sit on their as*ses all day and do nothing about the customers who have been requesting this, I guess that is what I will do when they launch their next game - nothing. No buy.

I guess I'll just continue playing GTA5 with my friends and forget I ever had ED. Last time I back a project that's for sure.
